  Jezebel was three when she first heard those words. She was three when she learned her mother had perished during childbirth and her father didn't exist. Orphaned at such a young age, it was easy to accept that she didn't have the same luxury most other children had–warm meals and a kiss goodnight each evening. But all of that changed when a renowned minister stepped into the picture two years later.

  As an avid listener, an observer and someone with a high regard for reservation, Jezebel is often one to bite her tongue when confronted with conflict. Her forte lies in her uncanny ability to read body language and react accordingly. This practice was taught early on given Jezebel's ties with the Catholic Church, her psychiatrist, and their inclinations toward evolutionary reticence.

Of the two most prominent figures in Jezebel's life, both are men. However, one withholds a deeper, more intimate bond than the other.
Known as the famous Dr. [r e d a c t e d], the psychiatrist developed an interest in the priest's daughter right around her sixth birthday. Father Gabriel, the second prominent figure, never expressed why that came to be the way it was, but more pieces fell into place as years progressed. And by the time she'd reached womanhood, it was apparent that Gabriel's prize, a girl with pale skin, green eyes and hair the color of pearl, wasn't the same as any average passerby. But, rather something far more extraordinary.​

In the early stages of corruption, those of the sickness form prominent fangs and rapidly accumulate fur on their bodies. As mutations progress, so, too, does drastic changes in the human host. Their arms and legs lengthen. The spine then curves abnormally large and the entire facial structure begins to protrude. Eventually, the host concludes its transition as a Scourge Beast: an extremely fast and powerful creature capable of closing in on Hunters unpredictably.

Along with the physical transformation comes a mental degradation. Initially, the victim assumes those unfamiliar to them are hostile, resulting in attack-on-sight habits. Furthermore, the infected becomes increasingly hostile—to the point it can only stand to be around others of its ilk.

Under rare circumstances, mutations allow Scourge Beasts a unique transcendence into Nephiriam: a superior branch of The Scourge with the ability to better control their mental afflictions and hone their transformation abilities from man to beast.
Note: It is rumored that infected Clerics of the Healing Church become the largest of the beasts when they succumb to the madness of the infection.

The most common form of Nephiriam and their blood sickness appears to be lycanthropy: humans slowly turning into wolf-like anomalies. However, there have been reported cases in which Nephiriam take on other animal-like qualities such as bats or bears. {under development}

• The Healing Church:
Founded by Laurence, the First Vicar, the Church is the most important institution in Yharnam and, indeed, all of the Czech Republic. Its doctrine is based on the cult of the Ancient Blood and its extraordinary properties: an intoxicating substance with healing powers capable of significantly improving the physical qualities of humans who are infected with it. {Also referred to as the so-called Blood Communion.}

The powers of the Old Blood drew pilgrims from all over the world to Yharnam as the rites of Communion pervaded the city's culture. As a result of this, the Healing Church has gained widespread support among the residents, becoming the city's governing body. Unfortunately, however, the infusion of Blood has led to an unintended consequence: cellular mutation and the transformation of humans into ferocious beasts known as The Scourge.

Before the conception of the Healing Church, Laurence had been a student at Byrgenwerth Academy—a place of study founded by Master Willem. At Byrgenwerth, theology and science collided, with the Truths of the Cosmos serving as the primary focus of research.

In this sense, Rector Willem was not content with speculation but instead invested heavily in archeology and exploration. The research methods led the Byrgenwerth scholars to delve into ancient labyrinths beneath the old city of Yharnam—Pthumeru's underground labyrinths: an ancient fallen civilization.

During the exploration of the Pthumerian labyrinths, the Academy made its first significant discovery. In fact, it appears that during their expansion, this ancient civilization came into contact with the so-called Great Ones, Cosmic deities who guarded absolute truths. Byrgenwerth's research revealed the cooperative relationship between the Pthumerians and the Great Ones: a symbiotic coexistence that resulted in an exchange. On the one hand, the Pthumerians defended and worshiped the Great Ones. The inhabitants of Pthumeru, on the other hand, received the Communion of Blood and knowledge of arcane techniques.

It was the first proof of the Healing Blood's extraordinary qualities, upon which the Healing Church's entire doctrine was based. Master Willem, however, detected a threat. The fluid was divine in origin and possessed great power, but it caused a cellular mutation in the organism, resulting in the release of the scourge of bestiality. Pthumeru's demise was brought about by the disease. A true pandemic caused civilization to decline and forced it to seal itself within the same labyrinths, hiding from the outside world. Their fate was then to stand guard over the sleeping Great Ones, protecting their dramatic secret.

Willem was afraid that the city of Yharnam would disintegrate as a result of Pthumeru's testimony and death, so he decided to abandon his research on the Old Blood. Laurence, a Byrgenwerth student at the time, disagreed and left the Academy to establish the Healing Church, which is based in the Grand Cathedral of Yharnam.

Willem's methods were not completely abandoned by the fledgling organization, which continued to explore the ancient underground labyrinths. Years later, they discovered and apprehended Ebrietas, the Daughter of the Cosmos, a Great Lesser One. Ebrietas was then imprisoned and transferred beneath the Grand Cathedral in order to exploit the Blood's powers.

𝐍𝐮𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡
The Nuns of the Healing Church were true saints who were chosen as incubators of Holy Blood due to their purity of soul: subjected to continuous infusions with the goal of cultivating it and making it available to the Healing Church's insatiable members. As previously stated, the Ancient Blood was highly addictive. This required a steady supply for scholars and Healing Church members. The fluid infused into the Nuns' bodies allowed it to be disposed of continuously, albeit in a more diluted and less potent form.

Their existence appears to imply that there were some people who were immune to bestiality and could cultivate Blood within their own bodies without suffering the consequences. This, however, was a very uncommon feature. In fact, the saints of the Healing Church were few and far between.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦
Yharnam is a towering, labyrinthine gothic city, home to both the Healing Church and the Blood Ministrations, both of which govern the city. As mentioned prior, The Church focuses around healing by infusions of blood. Miraculously, blood healing can repair wounds and cure or hinder diseases, and as Yharnam's entire culture became focused on blood, so, too, did many other elements. Even to the point of blood-based drinks surpassing alcoholic beverages as the most commonly consumed.

Yharnam's populace is considered insane or degenerate by the wider world, thus making the citizens extremely distrustful of non-natives as a result.

𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
Both respected and feared, Hunters bring down the worst of the beasts, but are never immune to risk of contamination.

• Eileen, the Crow:

• The Choir:
It is the most important and respected body in the Healing Church. They have the task of communicating with the Great Ones of the labyrinths in order to transcend humanity's existential plan. In fact, they possess a Higher Knowledge {insight} provided by constant contact with Ebrietas, the Daughter of the Cosmos, a divinity discovered in ancient labyrinths and brought to Yharnam, in the Grand Cathedral. The Choir members gained their knowledge from their contact with Ebrietas. Above all, the Great Ones ensure the Church and the city of Yharnam a constant and continuous flow of Healing Blood.

Members of the Choir are also hunters and labyrinth explorers. However, unlike their peers, they're able to wield powers and artifacts derived from the Great Ones. Caryll, an ancient hunter who transcribed the indecipherable sounds of Great Ones into specific runes that the Hunters could use to improve their combat and knowledge skills, is one of the most important members of the Choir.
