Celebrations were a time for fun and happiness. Most lasted for only one day while others lasted for weeks, major holidays had come with a month of preparation to get things into the spirit. Yet this particular celebration was something entirely different, one that had the entirety of Earth participating. Today was the first anniversary that the planet had entered an era of peace. A day of praise for the heroes of Earth, the Hyperion Brigade.
The Hyperion Brigade is a group of space-faring heroes that have sworn to protect the people of Earth from danger both on and off the planet. They've seen plenty of battles, ones that have almost seen their world and others destroyed. The powers that were cultivated during their training had a hand in aiding these particular individuals. Red, the leader of the Hyperion Brigade whose skill with the blade went hand in hand with her powerful telekinetic ability, but those paled in comparison to her charisma. Blue was the tactician of the group whose control over the mind has helped them on the battlefield more times than they could count. Yellow, the energetic hero with the power of mimicry never failed to put a smile on everyone's faces. Green was the stoic powerhouse of the group who could manipulate their size accordingly to the situation. Pink was the voice of reason with the power to increase and decrease the ages of organic and inorganic material at varying speeds. And last but not least, Orange who joined the Brigade based on his devout admiration for his teammates had the ability to manipulate the very oxygen that surrounds them.
Parades filled the streets, children dressed as their favorite Brigade members, and shops full of merchandise. The stadium which would serve as the place to have the Brigade make their public announcement had crowds of people piling in to find their seats. It was also going to be broadcast all over the world so no one would be left out. Anticipation bubbled between the people like a pot about to overflow, and after some time when the lights began to dim the lid flew right off. Spotlights were pointed at the stage which had a man in a suit standing at the center. He cleared his throat before speaking into the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for joining us today, we also appreciate your valued patience. Without further ado, I give you the Hyperion Brigade!"
The instant the introduction was finished, five individuals appeared onstage behind the man as they dropped from the sky in a typical superhero fashion. There was another eruption from the audience that was almost deafening, the Hyperion Brigade simply waved while the announcer was having trouble keeping his smile while trying to cover his ears. Yet he turned around and shook each of the member's hands before making his exit, leaving the Brigade to address their loyal fans. The cheers soon died down for a chance to let their heroes speak, Hyperion Yellow tapped the microphone to test the sound, and he looked out at the audience on either side.
"Well? Why'd you stop? One more round please and with feeling." At the hero's request, the crowd roared once again but the hero did not look completely satisfied.
"No, no that won't do, try again please." There was an even louder response this time, it was thunderous and Hyperion Yellow was completely soaking up the energy. "That's what I'm talking about! Now it's a celebration."
Beside him, Hyperion Green couldn't help but shake his head at his teammate's antics. Hyperion Yellow could barely make out the groan that escaped Green's lips and a mischievous grin flashed on his own before it lowered into a half-smile. Yellow gave Green a pat on the arm. "Sorry couldn't hear you, big guy. You wanna say a few words? I'm sure your adoring fan base would very much appreciate that." At that moment, Green glared down at Yellow, who smiled innocently. The large man could hear a good portion of the audience agreeing to the notion, seeing as how Green obviously came off as the strong silent type. Hearing anything from him out in the public eye was very rare, so he then turned his sights to the people before him.
"Thank you all for coming out tonight…" His voice was a deep baritone, usually pleasant on the ears for all to enjoy. Most of the people were pleased to hear it, especially some of their more...enthusiastic fans. Yellow laughed as he gave his comrade a few smacks on the back, the action unknowingly caused Green to press his fingers deeper into the skin of his arm.
"Not every day we get to hear our jolly Green giant speak up. But yes, thank you all for coming out and showing your support on this momentous day!" Hyperion Pink giggled. "It still feels so surreal seeing my face on a cereal box, which tastes really good by the way. But really, with all those years passing by I didn't think that I'd be standing here today…" She rubbed the back of her head with a soft smile, it was obvious that Pink was on the meeker side in comparison to the others. It was the type of personality that everyone ate up, something that made everyone want to root for her. "It's all thanks to everyone's support that I can proudly call myself a Brigade member! Also, I would like to take this moment to celebrate pride month and everyone in the LGBTQ community!" Pink flashed everyone a sincere toothy grin but it soon gave way to the surprise from the thunderous laughter from the person at the end of their line. It was on the other side of Green but she could make out his trembling form.
"Indeed! The Hyperion Brigade is thankful to all of you for fueling the fire within us!" Orange spoke with the same fiery passion that he was known for among the Brigade, a passion that more often than not had the rest of them end up with migraines. "Over the years of battle and attrition, we have always had every one of you in our hearts! Like the battle of Paolara where Red used her telekinesis to defeat the separatists that were enslaving the people of a major city, then when Green and Yellow shrunk down to microscopic size to destroy the Bamhe parasites that were infecting a ship full of mercenaries! It's that kind of passion for heroism that has led us to the world that we live in today! I am truly glad to be a Brigade member!" An echo rung out through the stadium which was absolutely silent save for the light panting from Orange. The rest of the Brigade members looked at him with slight exasperation, Blue however simply smiled to the point that he was chuckling.
"Always the more outgoing of us, Orange. But overall it does ring true, we the Hyperion Brigade would be nothing if we didn't have all of your support over the years of service. While we have been through major battles throughout our career in the cosmos, one enemy has always stood in the way of true justice…" Blue's tone of voice turned slightly bitter once the word 'justice' was uttered. The other members picked up on it as well and they all knew where he would be going with this. "Betelgeuse, a collective of villainous extraterrestrials that have laid siege to galaxies even before our first space expedition. Wherever they went destruction was sure to follow, along with the deaths of thousands…"
The very name of the organization was enough to send shivers down everyone's spines. News had reached Earth about the devastation that they were in a power struggle with that particular group. Children, being big fans of the Hyperion Brigade, knew about some of the interviews and podcasts they would participate in and their own personal experiences with the criminals. Some of them were saddening and graphic at certain points, but the one thing that was apparent in each of the members was definite fear. One particular subject was Saxis, the leader of Betelgeuse who was described as an enormous being with four eyes, horns, and giant crimson wings that seemed to stretch on forever. Who wouldn't get nightmares from such a thing? "As some of you know from certain interviews, I'm sure you have some idea of what they were capable of as well as their leader, Saxis." Blue continued. "While all of his associates have been dealt with he has been captured, sealed, and forever locked away." Blue then looked down, seeming to hold back tears. He, along with the others, could never forget their final battle with Betelgeuse on planet Thestromia. The Brigade had arrived too late and the majority of the planet had been wiped out by the organization. It was a long, grueling battle with both sides being brought to their knees. Red felt the worst of it, and couldn't help but let her emotions guide her through her own fight with Saxis. And that was her mistake. Everyone knew about that mistake.
"Although we won that battle, it came at a horrible cost." Everyone in the audience felt the sting of that loss, the lights then began to dim and the large screen behind them came to life showing Red, her thick and wavy blonde hair flowing in the breeze while she held up her sword, determination lit in her eyes as she stared into the camera. Ever since that fateful day, there had always been a hole within the team, even after Orange took up a position they were still in disarray. Blue especially, it was no secret that he admired Red more than anyone else.
"But with that sacrifice, it gave us all the push we needed to finally take that monster down once and for all. It is what has led us to these days of peace that we have today, not just Earth but the galaxies far and wide that were finally free from the tyranny of Betelgeuse!" The words that Blue spoke resonated with the audience as well as the other Brigade members. "Although they are gone, there are still threats looming out there in the stars trying to seize everything in their grasp. This goes out as a warning to all the scum that wish to do harm to our galaxy, and to you, the people of Earth a reassurance to protect for as long as we still draw breath. We will never stop fighting." Blue raised his hand high in the air which summoned his weapon, a golden trident with blue flames emitting from its edges. Yellow summoned a lance of the same color, Green with his ax, Pink and her saber, and Orange a sword that slightly resembled Reds.
"This we swear as the Hyperion Brigade!" With that declaration, their weapons glowed with a high amount of energy as beams of light shot upwards into the sky each the color of the respective members. The result was the audience's praise and adoration for their heroes, and the victory on Thestromia also reminded the citizens of what types of horrors lay waiting for them outside their doorstep. It reminded them of how brave they were for traveling so far away from their home to places unknown, meeting new species, and seeing unbelievable sights. It gave the younger generations aspirations for what they wanted to do with their futures, thinking they could protect the planet the same way the Brigade does.
