Sleep didn't come easy to her that night. Most nights it would come on gentle wings, but tonight it was a fight. Her mind swirled with thoughts of her past. Not realizing that tonight was the night of the worst time of her life. But also the night of his peace. Still missing him after all these years. The sound of his laugh, and the smile that would grace his face. Throwing the covers off her bed, swinging her feet off the bed, they hit the hardwood floor. Barefeet padding down the hall, peeking in to check on the sleeping children in their beds. A smile spread across her face. Knowing that they were safe and sound in their beds. Closing their doors once again softly. Walking down the hardwood stairs. They creaked under the weight of her foot falls. Walking off the last step onto the tile living room. She walked over to the lamp that sat upon the table. Flicking the light on, a soft glow fills the room. Looking around the silent living room. A few toys lay out from the kids. Smiling she walks over and picks them up from the floor. Putting them on a waist high bookshelf.

Laying them upon the shelf, a photo album aged and cracked. Her hand going out and running on the hard torn edges. Picking up the album, she makes her way over to the love seat. Pulling her feet up onto the soft cushions. It sinks under the weight of her body. Placing the worn and aged album upon her legs. Opening up to the first page. Memories of the past filled the pages. Loving faces smiled back at her. In happy moments of time. Forever to be held in that one precious moment. Turning the pages slowly one after the other. Each holding a special place in her heart. Ones that she would never let go of. No matter how long she lived on this earth.

Time ticked by, time held no meaning to her. As she was lost within the pages. Resting her cheek on her hand. Wishing that she could step back into time. To relive all the moments frozen in time before her eyes. Without knowing, she fell asleep. Her head laying on the arm rest. Falling into a deep sleep.

Laying on a pillow soft ground. Bright light shines all around her as she lays still. A gentle breeze russell's her hair. Waking her gently, to the beautiful world around her. As her soft green eyes opened. Blinking into the bright sky above her. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. The soft blue sky, spread endless to her eyes. Pushing up off the ground. Not knowing where she was. But she felt safe here. Long auburn hair billowing out around her small frame. The breeze was warm and inviting. Reminding her of a mild summer day. As she stood on the ground. Barefoot and a long white silk gown, wrapped around her frame. The soft green grass working gently through her toes. Looking around the vast green field. It spread out as far as her eyes could see. For miles and miles. Flowers covered the green grass, every type and color.

Basking in the world around her, not taking notice of the grand pearl gates behind her. Taking in every sight, sound and smell. It was a wonderful place she fell into. Getting caught up in the world that felt so much like home.

Slowly the gates open, as a single man walks out. He had come for her, this was their time to see each other once again. For he had brought her here. Knowing how much she was missing him and needed him. As he made his way beyond the gates of pearl. Making his way down the hill to the woman before him. She had grown into a woman that he was so proud of. She needed to know that he was proud of her. That he watched over her, loved and missed her everyday that he was gone. Coming to a stop behind her, his voice deep. It rumbled in his chest. As he spoke to her for the first time in 8 long years.

"Puff…" His voice filled with so much love for her.

The moment that he said her nickname. One that he gave special to her. For her love of sweets, and her puff little cheeks from when she was but a baby. Not believing her ears, he couldn't be here. He had passed long ago, this had to be a dream. Almost scared to turn around and he would be gone again. Not able to take that again. But she could feel someone behind her. So, he must be there, he had to be there. Having wanted a moment like this since he passed away. Taking a deep breath, slowly she starts to turn. Closing her eyes, holding to hope a little longer that it was him. Stopping she is fully facing him. Taking a few deep breaths, slowly opening her eyes. At first the light was to bright, it was hard to make at the person before her. Once her eyes adjust to the light once more. Her eyes going wide as her mouth drops. Her hand flying up to her mouth. His sweet, wrinkled face spread wide with a grin. One that she had missed so much. Tears formed in her eyes, spilling over and down her cheeks. Her voice a breathless whisper.

"Grandpa?"

The smile on his face grew wider, "Yes, Puff its me." Her wrinkled face, beamed with joy and love.

Without a second thought, closing the distance between him and her. Wrapping her arms around him as tight as she could. His strong gentle arms wrapped around her. Holding her close to him. As she buried her face in his neck. Not a word was said in that moment. Her heart was bursting with such happiness that she couldn't hold it back. The tears showed how happy she was to see him. After such a long time. Having wished for a moment like this since the day he passed.

They held each other, not knowing how much time they held each other, time didn't matter here. Once they let go for each other. Stepping back, he wiped away her tears. The rough pads of his fingertips, felt like they always had to her. His eyes soften to her.

"No tears Puff."

Nodding her head. She understood, seeing that he was at peace. He was living beyond death. Nothing could touch him here. In his own place, to live out the rest of time. That dried her tears. His hand fell from her cheeks. Offering her his hand. His hands worn from his life on earth.

"Come."

Not taking a second thought, she slipped her hand into his as his large hand swallowed up her tiny soft hand. Just like a child's hand in the hand of their parents. Leading them, just as he lead her back through the pearl gates. Walking up a slope, that peaked out over the vast land. Every color bright and vivid. Each color sang, each in harmony with the others. Blending to make one of the most beautiful songs she had ever heard. It touched her deep within her soul. In the distance a large lake spread out, animals drank from the water. A large house, not to overdone. A simple two-story farm house, shot up into the sky. A walk around porch wrapped about the front and the back of the house. Two white rocking chairs sat on either side of the front down. As steps lead down to the grass below. Looking around in amazement, her grandpa spoke.

"The time has come."

She was a little confused as to what he meant. But she was about to find out what his words meant. Leading her down the slope to the farmhouse. Reaching the steps together, walking up to the front door. Looking down at her as he opened the door, a smile still in place. Beaming a smile up at him. Pushing open the door, both of them stepping inside. It was a normal farmhouse, but it moved and changed. Like it was alive and all its own. It changed into a long hallway with doors on each side. Each one of the doors marked a time in his life. She was a little confused by this. Looking up to her grandpa.

"What does it mean Grandpa?"

He chuckles, "Always eager to find out, Puff. You will find out soon enough."

Giggling, he was right. She always wanted to know what was coming. She felt safer that way, to know what to expect. But she trusted her grandpa not to steer her wrong. He hadn't in the past, and he wouldn't do that now. Nodding, her head.

"You know me very well grandpa."

He chuckles once more, leading her down the long hallway. When they get about halfway down the hall he stops. The number on the door, 1982. She smiled knowing what that year would bring. Opening the door, they step through. Once inside the door closed behind them. Looking around, it looked as though they had stepped inside a picture. Walking through the year 1982, the first time that he held her in his arms. A smile of love and joy across his face. As her little finger held to his. Walking through to her first Christmas when he dressed at Santa. When she was 3 months old. Each moment held in time came to life before her eyes. It was amazing to see the world that she grew up in. She could feel the love he had for her. Stepping out of the door, they made their way down to the other doors. Her first words, first bike ride, first time ever seeing snow. The look she would get each and every time that she got to spend with him. Helping put together something that most would see as nothing. But it meant the world to her. To have those special moments with him. The times when she was a teenager and he was the shoulder that she leaned on. To the last moment he took his breath. Seeing it through his eyes and what he felt. Nothing but the love of the family that stood around him and sang. As they let him go for the last time.

They walked through each and every door. Reliving the wonderful moments of their lives together. It did her heart and soul good to see all the wonderful memories that they shared. Coming to the last door, he didn't reach for the handle. He knew what was on the other side of that door. Glancing down to her with loving eyes. He spoke.

"This is for you alone. To step through and see what you have known all along. Only you can walk through that door."

Holding tighter to his hand, not wanting to let go of him. It scared her to know what was on the other side of that door. She was enjoying her time with grandpa, not wanting this to be the end of their time together. Stepping away from the door, she knew the year all too well. It held to much pain for her. Holding her hand in his.

"Puff, you need to see this. It is your memory that I have carried. And you need to know what is beyond that door. Everything will become clear once you see what is beyond that door." He stepped to her, "Trust me, Puff. There is nothing to fear beyond that door."

Looking to his soft and warm eyes. He had to be telling the truth. Reaching to her face, softly taking it into his strong hands. Kissing her forehead lovingly. Hold to his forearms, not wanting to say goodbye. Her voice almost broke with tears.

"See you soon Grandpa."

He smiled, stepping away from her. Off to the side, the door stared her in the face. Looking once again to her grandpa, he smiled nodding his head to the door. She nodded, giving the best smile that she could. To let him know that she would be ok. Placing her hand on the door knob. Taking a few deep breaths, closing her eyes she opened the door and stepped through. The door sealing behind her. It was silent all around her, a little to scared to open her eyes. Hearing birds chirp, peeking. She was standing alone, a child's playground laid out before her. No children played on the toys. It was just her alone. The world looked different, looking down at her body. Placing her hands out in front of her. She was back in the body of her young self. Glasses in place on her face, her long hair in a ponytail. Wearing jeans, a pink and white top.

Why was she back in her childhood body? She didn't understand anything that was going on now. But grandpa had brought her here for a reason. And she was going to find out what that reason was. There was something that he needed to tell her, but he wouldn't use his words. He would show her instead. Just like he always did. He knew that she would understand this better than simple words from him.

"Let's see what you have to say to me, Grandpa." Talking to herself, there was no one else to listen to her here. Making her laugh, talking to herself just like her grandpa did. Guess it was something that came natural to them both. And it always made her smile. A little part of him that was a part of her in this life. Even if people looked at her strange. She would brush it off just like her grandpa would.

Slowly making her way down the center of the playground. Not knowing which way to go. Just letting her feet guide her. Not knowing how long she walked. The sun hung bright in the sky, it filtered down through the treetops. The beams of light playing on the ground before. Walking over to a swing set. Sitting down, she starts to move back and forth. Feeling alone and forgotten. That no one wanted her. Being ripped away from the ones that loved her. All because someone felt the need to cause problems. That had been her life, in the darkest valley's. Feeling that she had walked them alone. But that wasn't true, she never walked them alone. Because the two people that had always been in her life. To guide her, love her and raise her as their own. That were her grandpa and grandma. The thought of them made her smile. Just as she thought of them. Two figures appeared. One taller, the other smaller. Looking up from the feet. Her eyes locked on them. They stopped and stood in place. Cocking her head to the side she watched them. Not knowing who they were. One the tall one raised its hand into the air and waved. The smaller one followed suit. Slipping off the swing, raising her hand into the air. Waving back at them, something about them didn't feel like strangers to her.

Wanting to know who these people were. Slowly she starts to make her way to them. They start to become bigger the closer that she gets to them. Their faces and become clearer to her. The moment she realizes who they are. She bursts into a run, opening her arms wide. Tears filled her eyes, squealing at the top of her lungs.

"Grandma!!! Grandpa!!!"

Tears streaming down her cheeks, as her grandpa bends down on his knee. His arms wide open, welcoming her home. The moment that she was close enough to him. She leaped into his waiting and loving arms. He embraced her, picking her up. Wrapping her little arms around his neck. Hugging him as hard as her little arms could muster.

"I have missed you Grandpa."

His voice rumbled in his chest. His voice breaking with that of the unshed tears. He held her tighter to his form. Not wanting to let go. He had waited for this moment for awhile. And to be able to his hold his grandchild once more. Made his heart fly high into the clouds. He has wanted her home with and his wife. Since the moment that she was ripped out of their home. Wanting so many times to go and get her. To take her away from all the hurt she was feeling. To carry that hurt all his own.

"Do I get to come home with and grandma, grandpa?"

It breaks his heart that he didn't even know the answer to that question. Because he didn't know when she would be home. But he hoped that it was soon. They couldn't handle being away from each other anymore.

"I don't know Puff, but it should be soon. Then you will be home, where you belong."

She nodded her head, staying in his arms. Where she wanted to be. She wanted to be home with grandpa and grandma. But only time would tell when that day would come. When she wouldn't have to be apart from them. To actually be happy and not fear anything that would come her way.

They spent their time talking about her school, what she did in class and how she was enjoying her time here. Talking about how they would get to go fishing once she was home. And that the other family missed her as well. That they wanted her to come home as well. Time was drawn to close with each other. She didn't want the time to end with them. Holding her once again close to his tall strong frame. Wrapping her arms once again around his neck. It was way too soon, the time had passed too fast. He kissed her cheek, as he hugged her tight.

"I love you Puff. And I'm so very proud of you. I will always watch over you. Never will I be too far away from you. Always know that I'm there and love you with all my heart."

As she cried into his neck, hanging on for dear life. Her little voice broken and sad.

"I love you to Grandpa."

With those words, she was whisked away, waking in her living room once again. The photo album laying open on her legs. Turned to the page of her and her grandpa, standing side by side. That day at the park. She was holding to him like he was the lifeline to her. That held her in place. He had a beaming smile on his face, as did she.Still feeling his warm arms around her. Reaching to the picture, tears soaked her eyes. She ran her fingers over the photo. Remembering that day as one of the best memories that she had with grandpa. Whispering softly.

"Thank you, grandpa. I love you and still miss you to this day. It was good to see you again. I will see you soon."

Pressing her fingers to her soft lips, placing it on the photo. Wiping her eyes, she closes the photo album. Placing it back onto the shelf next to the toys. Turning the lamp off, the house once dark again.
