Just the Basics // An Introduction to Praxis I read, and I write. I listen, and I watch. My availability is spotty, and my cravings waver like the breeze. I'm old enough to vote, drink, and rent a car. I've been at this hobby for longer than is probably wise, and I know what I want, how to find it, and can generally gather (most of) what I need to know off a vibe check. For those curious to see some writing samples, look here. Themes & Genres Cyberpunk • Slice of Life (with effort, and creativity, please) • Sci-Fi • Modern-Fantasy • High Drama • the Abstract • the Absurd • Mystery • Suspense • (some) Historical Fiction • Horror • (both inner and outer) Demons • Depression • Grief • Anxiety... Pairings & Settings Deep Space • a City on the Verge (of what? I dunno. Let's discuss) • People vs People • Women and Men • Black vs White (conceptual, not racial) • Lovers and Scholars • Small Towns by the Sea • Sweet-Faced Ones with Nothing Left Inside... The Do's & Do Not Do's Do be patient Don't be a spazz Do contribute to the plot Don't expect quick, easy smut Do communicate Don't put all your eggs in one basket (just, like, generally) Do remember this is for fun Don't cry (unless you really have to) Do tell me what you enjoy about what we create Don't be afraid to share related media Some Loose Ideas // Perfect From Now On In the distant, but relative, future, propagation of the species has become the latest trend for twenty-something, neuvo-yuppies. Be that because of population density decreases, or the newest, socially-aware way to make your mark in the world. Arranged marriages, and planned communities offer everything you'd need, as a fresh, educated baby-maker on the rise. The turn: two characters discover a nefarious sub-culture, within these planned communities, and ...a story unfolds. What's the sub-culture? I dunno. Aliens? Mutants? Reverse-Vampire Overlords from Space? A fucking demon, and his sick pocket-universe? Inspirations: That one episode of Black Mirror, where a person's rating dictates their lot in life. Pleasantville. The Stepford Wives. Vanilla Sky. Housing Tracts. Idioteque. Genesis 3:14 A recently constructed apartment complex, built on the gutted-out remains of a city's large homeless population, experiences strange occurrences and ...dare we say, hauntings? This could be an ensemble piece (where several characters are featured, "chapter to chapter". The setting, after all, lends itself well to a large cast of characters). Or a more narrow, intimate, approach, where one, or two, characters become the central focus, and deal more directly with the paranormal/otherworldly events. Inspirations: Liminal spaces. The story behind Dodger's Stadium being built. Super-spooky ghosts. Actual scary things. The Shining. 1408. I-99 A roadtrip across post-fallout North America. Either in search of something, or just for good old fashioned funsies; because nihilism is the new American dream, baby! This is a concept best suited for history buffs, or anyone who wants to play what if with the cards at play. Inspirations: (in no particular order): tube tops, miniguns, lipstick, nuclear bombs, convertible muscle cars, pigtails, Mad Max, Tank Girl, hair bleach, the f-word , bullet shells, desert roads, abandoned gas stations, kudzu vines, sunsets, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Planet of the Apes... God Hates Us All Detectives, investigating a string of grisly, ritualistic murders in a small town (the American southwest, Appalachia, the Rust Belt etc). Should focus heavily on the mentalities/modalities of each player character (bonus points if they differ, and overlap, to stunning effect), with the option for either, or both, of us to play the murderer(s) for added thrill. Inspirations: (the first season of) True Detective. Mindhunter. Se7en. Protracted soliloquies. Existential Depression (hence the working title). The Occult. Eldritch Horror. The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. Blood Meridian. That wicked speech the Warden gives in Shutter Island (the movie, not the book. Good god, not the book version)... Patterns in the Ivy A knight embarks on a quest to awaken a dreaming god from her centuries long slumber. Tasked with escorting a seer through a dreamland, fraught with danger, the pair learn more about one another as they grow closer, and face increasingly nightmarish visions made real by the Dreamer. Inspirations: The Green Knight, Damsel in distress tropes, Low and high fantasy, Great and terrible magic, Pathways into Darkness, Elden Ring, Pan's Labyrinth, Creatures of unfathomable terror, Patterns in the Ivy... "We are like the spider. We weave our life, and then move along in it. We are like the dreamer, who dreams, and then lives in the dream. This is true of the entire Universe." artwork by Stanley Donwood
