My heart still stays, even as time slips away

Only this love remains, unending

Do you remember, my dear, what love tasted like? I can still feel the winds of those weightless days, gusting through my memories amid the pouring rain. Watching the ruffling of leaves of grass. Hearing the music of your laughter. Smelling the crisp, sweet breath of the night air. Warm in your arms, staring at the stars twinkling above. At the promise of a life together.

I hear our past howling through the rain

Your song still haunting my broken dreams

What I wouldn't give to return, even for a brief moment. Feel your angry pinches at another silly joke. See your glare melt into a smile at a kiss. Taking your hand in a dance by the moonlight, wet from the dew of the night. Singing together that song I made for you.

I long for you more, now you're not here

Those memories still too heavy to bear

But I cannot remember anymore.

Not the peaches and plums of home, ripe with the sweet juice of summer. Not the boisterous laughter of father's table, won from the blood of a hundred campaigns. Not my sister's warm embrace or mother's comforting smile, nor the cheers of the birds on a bright day. Even your face.

A candle burns alone against the cold

Sputtering low as time grows old

When I close my eyes at night, all I see are the horrors of that day. The emperor's men, night clad with pale swords. The house lit aflame. My sister screaming. The skulls and the bodies, strewn across the garden in rows of death. Then the bars, afterwards, the lightless black cells, the serrated bite of iron, the jailor's mocking laughter.

Wax melts away, yet still these tears stay

Mourning as the glow fades to grey

I know you think I must be dead. I know you would be overjoyed, finding out, after all those years of waiting, that I still live. I know you would not wait to be able to see me again. To relive those moments. Which is why…

The pen froze, wavered, and then it fell away, clinking uselessly back into the ink jar.

M lurched back, coughing. His was once a warrior's frame. Tall, strong, muscled. Forged by warfire before the prison's dark years had hollowed them out. His hands, which had been imposing, years before, were dark now, ugly gnashes eating across blackened fingertips. Perhaps he could have passed for a physician, with his long, thick white gloves. But there was no mistaking his eyes. Dark now, blacker than the shadows which surrounded the room, emptiness remaining where love and mirth used to be.

He might have been handsome without those eyes. If his family could see– but of course he had no family. Not anymore. Of everyone he knew, only one remained.

My heart still stays

Even as time slips away

He wrote on.

…I am sorry. It is a cruel thing, to leave you to despair while I yet live. But what choice remains? So long as the emperor reigns, I cannot rest. For the justice my family was denied, the oaths I swore before my father's grave, the memories I kept and the future we dream of; I must have my revenge.

I bid my thoughts fly

Yet where does my heart lie?

The man you loved is a ghost now. He must remain a ghost.

Though glow fades

The pen dropped once more. Ink splotched over the letter as his tears fell, running down the parchment in wet, bleeding trails. The words danced under the candlelight, squirming like something alive.

Even as the stars shine unchanged

I wish it were otherwise. I wish I could tell you myself. But some things are not meant by heaven to pass. Even so, I pray to whatever gods might be that you will come to know:

Only this love remains, unending

He stared at those words for a time, prying at the shadows of memories long gone by, before a knock came at the door.

"Milord, your carriage is ready."

He dipped the letter into the candle then, watching flames on the parchment dance alight. Then twist, crumple, blacken, until the tears burnt away.
M gave a curt nod. "Then let us go."

He did not allow himself to look back.

Hi everyone! So, this is Dright, here with a debut post. This is an idea I've been sitting on for a while, heavily inspired by one of my favorite childhood shows: Nirvana in Fire (think Game of Thrones, but chinese)! The plot I am imagining is similar. After having his family betrayed and executed by the emperor, the Male lead (my character) has to return for revenge, hiding his real identity from everyone, including the one he loves most (you!). Along the way, we'll be wrestling with this romance, the emperor's wrath, and whether love should come before or after revenge.

A lot of the planning is currently up in the air, so I am hoping for someone to bring some of their own ideas. How would you react seeing me, now that I'm completely different? Would you recognize me? Feel a strange mix of horror and pity? Help me with revenge, or be horrified and tried to dissuade me, maybe because the emperor is your own father? Surprise me.

Now, while the original setting of Nirvana is Chinese lowfantasy, I'm honestly open to playing any variation of history or fantasy with anyone. I'm most interested in the plot and characters rather than the setting, though of course if you are Chinese or have already watched nirvana I'm certainly not going to say no. I'm also happy to indulge any more smutty elements you might want to add ;P

That said, this is a prompt very close to my heart. Nirvana was the show I watched growing up with parents, and one of my first glimpses of what a real story looks like. The Song which inspired the italicized love letter is likewise one of my favorite songs (I'm learning to play it on piano right now, actually!). I am looking for a bit of a special partner, who can help me recapture some of the magic and really bring the story to life. Something good rather than fast, so please take your time!

RP aside, if you just loved the prompt or want to chat about settings or characters, I'm likewise open. In any case, look forwards to chatting with you!

PS: If anyone guesses what song inspired the letter, I'll be very impressed. And god, if you can sing it I'm yours.
