As some of you may know, I haven't been feeling well lately, and writing has been extremely difficult. I'm not sure I have a proper story in me, so I've decided to compromise and try a free verse poem instead.

A dusky night, an eve of fright, carved gourds glow with firelight.
Children roving in disguise, famous façades to fool the eyes.
Knocking on doors, alerting residents, from spectral forms to former presidents.
And in exchange, a sugary treat, or perhaps a prank, wouldn't that be neat?
The older crowd finds other thrills, like costume parties and haunted mills.
Perhaps a movie seen once a year, the kind that fills its viewers with fear.
Or otherwise a fitting sight of zombies shambling through the night.
Others may celebrate differently. The Day Of The Dead is a true sight to see.
Graveyards and burial grounds overflow with offerings and loved ones and colors of the rainbow.
A picture frame shifts as the clock strikes eleven. Perhaps it is Great Uncle Carlos, in heaven.
Amid all the wonder, if things seem amiss, rest-assured there's a rational explanation for all this.
The end of the harvest, a life after passing, the spirits rejoining our world and amassing.
Whatever poison, whatever you do, today, it's good luck when a black cat approaches you.
