I have two ideas, one that takes place before Avatar the Last Airbender, and another that takes place after the Legend of Korra.
Here they are:
1. During the Fire Nation invasion of the Earth kingdom, a small village is occupied, not a lot has been worked out here, but somehow, one of the inhabitants of the village and a fire nation soldier fall in love.
2. After Korra's time as the Avatar, a new Avatar is found in the Earth Kingdom, Akkia Oread. After a few months of training and showing no ability to bend any element other than Earth, she runs away, convinced that she is not the Avatar. The real Avatar is planning world domination.
