In a world antagonized and defended by superhumans for fifty years, people have begun to idolize them as celebrities. In those intervening decades, the defenders have fought for fair (and unfair) compensation for their efforts. These two forces result in the reality TV event of the summer: Sunshine Squadron, a series channeling the adventures of a new superhero team based on the picturesque California coast.
The network certainly loves the shots of regular beach rescues, in addition to the heroes backing down kaiju or busting smugglers in international waters. Our story will showcase the heroics, of course, but the drama that the viewers at home don’t see will be front and center. The pressures of being on a TV show and having your life on display, the interpersonal ups and downs, and the feeling that their heroics have been reduced to a commodity are a few I would like to explore.
And did I mention they all live together in a beautiful beach house and have lifeguard-inspired costumes?
A few character pitches:
Mariner - Leader of the team. Handsome, impeccable hair, tanned skin, slim, toned body. Recently separated from the planet’s biggest team, took this position as his “retirement”. His power set is like Aquaman’s but he lacks the ability to communicate with the sea creatures. Married to Aqua.
Aqua - Second in command. Like Mariner, she’s very beautiful and her hair is somehow always perfect. She’s been on the same team as him off and on but usually on smaller ones. Her power is the manipulation of water and she uses it to make Mariner stronger and faster in the water. Married to Mariner.
Bolt Babe - I don’t know I just liked the name. She could run on top of the water I guess.
I like a big cast, so I’d love to hear your character pitches too. I want the superhero world it’s set in to feel lived-in, so ideas for characters who aren’t members of the team are needed too.
Anyway, I think that’s most of it. I don’t have a clear idea for any overarching storylines, as like comics I think it will be fairly episodic to start with, and then find its big stories later on. Nothing is set in stone, I’m happy to hear any suggestions for tweaks to the story.
A little bit about me, I’m James, I’m 26, and I’m based in the Pacific time zone of North America. I love organization and I’d say I tend to write 4 to 8 paragraphs, unless it’s a back-and-forth dialogue. I’m expecting both of us to play several characters, and am looking for someone to share in the plotting, character creation, and worldbuilding duties of the role. I try to write at least one response every day.
