Eliot stares out the window of the coffee shop. His friend Maxwell sits beside him, setting his coffee within reach. Max immediately catches on to Eli’s wistful expression; his friend has been doing that a lot lately.

“Hey, what ya thinking about?” He’s expecting to get brushed off, for Eli to claim it’s nothing or just silly things like always.

But, Eli is so lost in thought he blurts and answer without filtering. “Girls are so pretty..” He doesn’t say it in a lonely way; it’s again wistful. Maybe a bit like he’s lost or even a tad jealous.

Max takes a moment to absorb the answer. He hates to assume, but they’ve been best friends for five years. He knows the other pretty well. “You can be pretty too, you know?”

Eliot seems to realize what he’s said and sighs. It’s too late to back track. He reaches for his coffee so he can treat it like a shield. “Not.. Not in the same ways they can. That’s just..”

“Not usual for guys?” Max earns a nod. “Well, who cares? Do it anyway.”

“Max, it-” He starts to object.

“No, I’m serious. You’ve been looking so unhappy with yourself. Let’s do something for you. How bout just for the day? And, you can decide after if you’d ever want to do it again.” He encourages and insists.

Eli sighs. “Where would we even start?”

The other hums thoughtfully. “Let’s go to the store, come on.”

He gets up, offering his free hand to the shorter guy. Once Eliot complies, he’s tugged to his feet and dragged along. They sip on their coffees in the car as Max drives, nowhere specific, just a general store. Eliot is nervous on his feet as they head inside.

“Alright.. Lets look at small things first..” He grabs a basket at the door then pauses to think. “How bout nail polish colors? I’ll paint mine with you too, if that helps.”

“Alright..” He mumbles.

They start towards the aisle that’s in. Max doesn’t hesitate to crouch and start looking over all the colors. Something Eliot will like.. His favorite color is purple. Maybe a pastel? Ah, there’s a sparkly one. He holds it up for the other to see.

“What about this one? It’s a little sparkly, like pixie dust.” He smiles as he gently coaxes his friend.

Eli does react, his eyes catching on the bottle. “Seems.. Pretty…” He mumbles.

That answer is really satisfying. “Here, pick out a color for me.” He encourages. He doesn’t want this just happening. He wants Eliot taking some action on his own.

Eli sighs and crouches. He is genuinely a bit nervous, but.. He seems to lighten a little by looking at all the pretty colors. “What about this one?” It’s a dark blue and a little holographic; it kind of reminds him of the ocean at night.

“Yeah? That’s pretty cool actually. Any others you like? Or do you want to see if you like doing it first?”

“Um..” He points to one of the bottles. It’s a clear polish with funfetti in it.

Maxwell smiles. “That’s really fun. Looks like a top coat though. How about..” He holds the purple from before up, trying to match it to a non-sparkly version. “You can do most of your nails sparkly, but then have a couple accent nails that are party nails.” He suggests. “We’ll grab a plain clear coat too, and the remover of course. In case you don’t like it.”

“O-ok..” Eliot is actually starting to feel a bit excited to do this.

Max stand, pulling his bestie up beside him. “Next…” He stares at his friend, who nervously tucks his bangs back to the side. “Ah, that’s a great idea.” He leads down a couple of aisles to a hair care one then over to all of the hair ties and hair clips. “Why don’t we pick some of these to catch your bangs?”

The other shifts on his feet again, but his eyes are catching on all the shapes and colors. “Yeah?” There’s a slight bit of excitement in his tone.

He nods. “There are too many cute options here though, huh?” He stares at them all for a moment. Honestly.. Why choose? This is his best friend trying to figure himself out. This is important. A pack of star shaped, then of hearts, a pastel rainbow pack that has that purple from before. “That’s a good start. What do you think?” Eli nods again.

What else, what else.. Max is thinking of his sisters for this. They’re all tomboys, but they like a few feminine things. It feels like a good stepping stone for reference.. Nail polish, hair clips.. He has another idea, but it might be harder to get Eliot to be comfortable with. He leads over an aisle again, looking at the intimidating shelves of makeup. He’s looking for something simpler though…

“How about one of these?” He holds a lipgloss; it’s lightly tinted. “They have sparkly ones too. It’s just a lip gloss.”

Sure enough, Eli seems very unsure of this one. “Just a lipgloss..” He mumbles back.

Max’s gaze softens. “Here, we’ll put it in the basket. And, it can stare at you for a while, yeah?” He gently places two different glosses in the basket. “Come on. Watching you shrivel into your sweater just gave me one more idea.”

Eliot loves sweaters; they’re probably his favorite clothing item. They also look good whether they fit to form or if they’re oversized and baggy. So, if there’s any female clothing item that’ll be easy to find a fit in.. They get to the women’s clothes, Eli looking a bit lost and confused.

“W-what are we doing?” He hazards.

“Looking for a cute sweater.” Max smiles encouragingly again. “Come on. Look, women’s clothes are much softer too.” He nudges gently with his elbow. Then he gasps quietly. “Eliot, look.” He paces quickly to a display and holds one of the sweaters up.

Eli’s eyes widen with a sparkle almost involuntarily. It’s got the words ‘Don’t worry. Be hoppy!’ on it, with two little frogs snuggled next to each other. His heart. He loves frogs too much.

Max’s smile turns to a smug grin. “Your face is saying all sorts of yes.” He looks through the hangers, finding one that looks a good size before holding it up to Eli to make sure it would fit him. He places it in the basket and starts towards the registers. “Let’s go. We need to get home and get you feeling better about yourself again.”

They check out and head home. Eliot stares out the car window thoughtfully the whole time. He’s nervous but maybe a little excited. When they get back to their shared apartment, the first thing Max does is send Eliot to change into the sweater. He brews hot coco and sets them up in the living room. Eliot seems flustered and quiet at first. They clip his bangs back and Max teaches him about painting his nails. By the end of it, they both have sparkly and shiny paint jobs, and they’re both laughing and having fun. He even gets Eliot to put the sparkly lipgloss on. The guy looks so happy, and Max can’t help but catch that joy.

“Gods, you look so pretty right now, Elly.” He compliments genuinely.

Eliot flushes a soft pink, the compliment making him feel fluffy. “E-Elly?”

“Yeah. Eliot. Elly-it, right? So, Elly. It’s cute; I think it really suits you.” The comment flusters the guy further, the softer one fidgeting with his sweater sleeves. “How are you feeling?”

“.. Different. Like.. Fluffy and lighter.” He replies, trying to find the right words. “It’s like..”

“You’re more yourself?”

He nods. “I mean, I wasn’t really hiding before, but..”

“You weren’t. You’ve never felt like a costume or anything. But, I could tell for a while there you were curling in on yourself, holding yourself back from something. I’m really glad I could finally hear why and start you towards feeling better.”

“I feel a lot better. Thank you, Max.” He smiles softly.

He takes a moment to fully take in the other, all his joy and how cute he is right now. He shares that same smile. “Yeah. Any time.”
