the self
⠀
Carline is better with animals than people, in every sense. She wants to work on that, but people can be so unforgiving. This, combined with the quiet acceptance of an animal, offers her little incentive to try much harder than she does. Although she would risk falling off of a tall tree to rescue a cat, she is unlikely to cross a vacant street to say hello to someone she has met before, hiding her face in a book to pretend she didn't see them instead.
ALIGNMENT:
Good enough for apothecary work.LOVES:
Plants & Animals, Books, potion crafting, the color green and fluffy, warm pancakes.HATES:
Having to repeat herself. Being interrupted when she's speaking. Abberations and Undead. Littering. The taste of eggplant and the smell of most ales.GOALS:
She wants to strengthen her apothecary skills and knowledge, chart and catalog important plants and recipes for potions, then eventually hopes to publish her work into a proper book.FEARS:
The sounds of the Whispering Gloom. It might be a creature, but it's a frightening insect that's often in the caves where rare mushrooms and plants grow. It's poison is valuable, but the sounds are down right haunting.⠀

the power
⠀
She is an Apothecary, learned in the art of herbalism and potioncraft. Her trade was honed through study in the University of Tethis, many hours of tending to stray animals, and the knowledge she gained while within her Druidic clan. She can diagnose poisons, diseases or even magical curses to develop cures with enough time and for the right compensation. With a wide ranging knowledge of various potions, she can craft buffs for her allies or provide burning oils and poisons to take down their foes.
Apothecary: Carline has a wide array of medicinal expertise and may create certain related concoctions.
Call Familiar: Carline has a familiar from the wilds that "adopted" her one day while gathering materials. Carline can call the Lynx's name, Will-o', and he will come find her if he's off exploring or hunting.
About Will-o': Carline has been loyally, and perhaps inconveniently adopted by a small wildcat, fully grown at roughly two-feet tall and 50lbs or so heavy. He is a Wisp Lynx. The species is commonly mistaken for small spirit wisps at night in the wild because of its glowing blue-green eyes that appear to float about. It is a typical wildcat that can bite or scratch and growl. It is rumored the Wisp Lynx has a direct connection to the spirit world and if one approaches a person, they are not long for death. Carline hasn't asked to confirm, but she suspects the rumors to be false. As this lynx's Familiar, Carline is allowed a degree of autonamy in exchange for belly rubs, snuggles, and food. Occasionally her cat will gift her small dead creatures such as mice and moths, to ensure that she does not starve.
Wild Shape: Tradition among her Druidic clan required rituals and burnt offerings of sacramental plants every full moon. The elders teach the clan that the moon receives their offerings and grants them the power to become beasts, for a time, so as to better empathize with nature and all who inhabit it. Carline participated in these events regularly before her coming of age, mastering her first shift into a common cat. She cannot currently turn into anything significantly more intimidating or useful than a cat, though she has been studying Will-o' when he'll let her.
Speak With Animals: It is also tradition to speak with animals in her Druidic clan, able to understand and communicate sentiments, needs, and commands. But, being able to communicate with an animal does not ensure its cooperation.
Thorned Whip: When Carline needs to defend herself, she can call upon nature to modify her weapon, a whip, with sharp thorns that will pierce and cause bleeding. If she uses a potion on the weapon it may add effects, like poison.
Primal Shift: Carline's fingernails and/or teeth grow sharp and pointed, like that of a beasts, and can be used to defend herself.
Entangle: Carline can summon vines and roots to create difficult terrain, potentially causing someone to trip or become caught inside of it.
Most things she stores in her quaint home, unless she needs to pack for a small expedition for herb collections. She keeps Herbalism tools (small pruning knives, shears, mortar & pestle, etc.) made from carved stone. A collection of books and scrolls pertaining to various plant, animal, anatomical, and fictional topics . A fist-sized smoky quartz shaped like a bear, given to her by her mother, said to be a token for protection. A long whip, the handle engraved with an image of a bear's claw, given to her by her father. Many glass, clay, and wooden jars, vials, and flasks. A 100 year old cast-iron Tethian Oven, ideal for making pancakes, though she definitely can't pack that in her bag.
ABILITIES //
Apothecary: Carline has a wide array of medicinal expertise and may create certain related concoctions.
- Diagnose: Attempt to discern the nature of a poison, disease, or other physical affliction endured by a creature with a physical form. While this may also reveal symptoms caused by magical means, it does little to identify the magic at the root of such an affliction. This process takes time - anywhere from several minutes to several hours, dependant upon how much information the patient can provide, how familiar Carline is with the affliction, and how subtle the symptoms of the affliction may be.
- Cure: Through selection and preparation of natural ingredients, Carline can attempt to create a remedy for an affliction she has successfully Diagnosed. A 'Cure' may be simply an alleviation of symptoms that allows the body to heal at an accelerated rate, or it may be something which actually combats the affliction itself.
- Brew Potion:Carline may prepare stimulants, suppressants, and enhancements to aid herself or others.
- Stimulants can make their user a little (but noticeably) quicker by hand, eye, or foot, for a length of time less than an hour, dependant upon the users metabolism and constitution. They also stave off the effects of sleep.
- Suppressants may stave off hunger, thirst, pain, or insanity to a minor degree, typically an hour or so.
- Enhancements bolster the strength or fortitude of their user to a minor but noticeable degree, generally for around an hour.
Call Familiar: Carline has a familiar from the wilds that "adopted" her one day while gathering materials. Carline can call the Lynx's name, Will-o', and he will come find her if he's off exploring or hunting.

- Making Biscuits: As an added benefit of being the Familiar of a wild cat, Carline is immune to the effects of "sleeping in" since her cat routinely awakens her at a regular (but sometimes arbitrary) hour before sunrise by kneading her back with its paws.
- Intelligent Animal: As the familiar of a feral cat, Carline is considered by this cat to be an "Intelligent Animal," which means that the cat can immediately cause her to understand basic concepts such as Follow, Stay, and Danger.
- Dominant Species: As in most relationships, the wildcat is in charge of its Familiar and will at times protect its friend with a series of hisses and flashes of sharp, dangerous teeth and claws.

the story
⠀
Once upon a time, Carline was a happy girl. She lived the life many little girls would envy; playing in fields, pretending to be a cat, actually being a cat, talking to flowers and also cats. Outside of Tethis, in the wilds, she helped her clan, tending to the protection of a sacred hot spring. In the past, the spring has been sought after by adventurers in order to bottle and drink the water with the hope of curing what ails them. However, soaking for an extended time is the proper way to recover in the spring. The Druids preform rituals to ensure the springs stay pure after,
Then one day, a man visited her tribe, and changed her life - forever. He tried to convince their clan that if he could take a small sample of the water, adding it to herbs he ground up with his mortar and pestle, that he could create a health potion that would invigorate the drinker. Her clan forbid it, but allowed him to stay and tell them more about Tethis, the university and these potions he spoke of. The Druids were known to craft with plants and nature, so this was intriguing, as they had already been doing much of what he was explaining all along.
Even so, his visit was enough to draw Carline in, and when she was of age, she left the clan and sought out the university to learn more about these potions. She gained admittance to the University of Tethis by a narrow margin, largely owing to the fact that she was something of a curiosity and the Horticulture professor took pity upon her. She served tables to pay her way, if only just, but finances and an inability to focus in a rigorous academic setting soon caught up to her. After just two years of diving into botany, she dropped out and decided to ply her trade, as best she may, as an Apothecary.
