it all started when...
Katrīna was born to Iveta and Ričards Holst. Her childhood was full of running around and following her father as much as she could because she was so intrigued about him being a visitor. Her love of math and numbers came from him. Whenever he allowed her into his studies to sit on his lap as he went through his paperwork and taught her first-hand how to solve certain problems — those are memories that Katrīna will always cherish. Her childhood was amazing, she was close to both her mother and father. They prided themselves on having such a smart daughter, and she was truly the apple of their eye.
However, life isn't always joyful and peaceful like that. When Katrīna turned 10, her mother started to get sick. The doctors couldn't tell exactly what was wrong or what was causing it. They said too much sunlight may be what was contributing to her declining health, so Iveta ended up being shut in the house as much as possible. Although sickly, Iveta still moved around and put on a strong happy face in front of her daughter. Whenever she was too weak to leave the bed, Katrīna would do her course work with the tutors next to her bed, so her mother wouldn't be alone. Her father tried to be around as much as possible, but it wasn't like he could push off work forever, plus the medical bills couldn't pay for themselves. Over the years, the bills only started to get more expensive and, still, no answer to what was ailing her mother was ever given. The doctors kept trying to figure out what could possibly be the cause of her health going down the drain so fast over the years, but they didn't have the knowledge they needed to pinpoint the exact cause. It was also around this time that her father was so stressed by his work, money, and his wife's declining health — he began drinking.
When Katrīna turned 17, that was when everything hit rock bottom. The year she should have been entering society, going to dances, and meeting other noble ladies — all was a dream when her mother finally passed away. Iveta was so weak and pale by the end of her life, yet still smiled so warmly at everyone around her. Even chiding her husband for smelling of alcohol sometimes when he would come home late. There was no big uproar when she passed, no fainting or choking. She passed in her sleep, a peaceful smile on her face. Somehow, more heartbreaking than anything else. Katrīna cried, like any normal daughter would do when their beloved mother passes. Her father... disappeared. Too succumbed to grief to show up and help his daughter. He got the news and simply said, "Excuse me", leaving for the bar to drink away everything that he was feeling. It came down to Katrīna to organize the funeral. With the help of the elderly butler who had been working for the family for most of her life, she was able to figure out exactly how to do it. Grieving, not knowing how to allow her mother a final goodbye, and her father nowhere to be seen. Although heartbroken for many reasons, Katrīna couldn't find it in her heart to truly blame her father. After all, he loved Iveta with all his heart. She was his soulmate. Of course, he would have a hard time saying goodbye. So, Katrīna picked up the slack. She made sure her mother had a proper funeral while her father drank away his pain. Afterward, her family entered the mourning period for a year.
Katrīna continued to further her studies for as long as she could, still not being able to enter society due to the mourning period and her father's constant absence. She tried to be understanding. Her father was having a very hard time, but she still couldn't help but feel lonely and wished he would stop drinking to be with her. He was the last family member she had, her beloved father. Of course, she would nag on him when he came home at 1am, reeking of booze. She quickly found that nagging at him only pushed him further away. He didn't yell or argue, he took her complaints and just started to hide what he was doing. Which made everything worse. So she stopped constantly nagging at him and focused on her studies, cherishing the moments he was actually around, even if he was still drunk.
Things took a turn for the worse when debt collectors started to arrive at the household doors and servants started to complain about not being paid. It was only then did Katrīna realize how far her father had fallen, and how much money trouble the family was in. Katrīna was out of her league when she went into her father's study and saw all the bills and the exuberant amount of unopened mail. Katrīna, at only 19, was faced with dealing with all the household finances and trying to hold everything together before she also lost her childhood home. With a bitter taste in her mouth, she reluctantly had to let many of the servants go, making sure they were well compensated as much as she could afford. Leaving her with only the elderly butler who helped with her mother's funeral, who she saw as a grandfather figure, and a dream of keeping her home.
It took years for Katrīna to get out of the red and pay off as many debts as she could, with no help from her father, who was gambling away their assets like he was breathing air. Overtime, she was able to make business connections, get into the stock market, do anything she had to gain more funds to try to minimize the damage her father was causing. She tried to talk to him, to try to get him to get help, but he only apologized — saying he knows, and he will get better... He never does.
Life started to get a little less stressful when Katrīna reached 35. At this point, she was used to dealing with bills and the finances of the household and as an acting visitor. She was proud of what she achieved. Even finding a way to give her elderly butler a decent sum to allow him to retire and rest easy, thanking him for all he had done for her and her family. Sure, she had to cook and clean the household herself now — but that was such a small problem compared to her father's gambling problems. She could manage. She has proven to herself over the years how well she understands the economy and the flow of money to allow her a little leeway to not stress about it 24/7.
It's always when things are looking up that they fall so quickly. What Katrīna thought would be a normal rest of her life dealing with numbers and finances, all changed when her father gambled too close to the sun and instead of losing money (he did not have), he gambled Katrina's hand away in a marriage to a cursed family.
