Personality:
What to say about Gennadius's personality? She's an ever-changing person, thrown through life like a ragdoll and forced to adapt. The history of her personality has brought her through the worst and best phases of herself. At one point, she was bitter, angry, and easily raged. Her mind was a cloud of guilt and shame, mixed into a need to be wanted and accepted. She was a spitfire, ready to challenge anyone who dared insinuate she didn't belong, ready to beat someone up just to prove she was stronger and more capable. She had a temper to be feared, and a pride she'd do anything to protect.
But now? Gennadius still has her flaws and her temper can flare with the right push, but she is a peaceful person. She has a strong sense of humor and sharp wit ready to match any quip with something just as good or better. Her laughter is never strong but instead warm chuckles and amused eye sparkles. There are days where she becomes dry, silent, and brooding, her past haunting her like an evil spectre trying to reclaim her and drag her back into the hellish depths of the woman she used to be. But in general, she remains at peace. She is quieter, and isn't one to start conversations often, but when she does, she speaks with a resigned confidence of maturity and experience beyond her years. She carries an air of mystery with her, a shroud of her past she rarely talks about, and if she does, the details are far and few between.
Her pride is light, but it remains in some areas. She is sure of herself, even when she isn't. She is still learning to smile again, though with some conversation and jokes, her smiles will tease at her lips. She is cautious but no longer withdrawn like she was when she first moved to Adonia. She watches constantly, ever aware, but can relax in areas she considers safe places. She is kind to children and those in need.
When a situation arises that does test her temper or, in the least, toys with her patience, she will not refrain from saying something. Her words will be sharp and to the point, akin to a dog giving a growl in correction: a warning not to be taken lightly. If pushed, she will come out swinging, literally. Though she has mostly walked away from that kind of life, she will embrace it in situations she deems necessary. She does not take shit, and will not take it.
Appearance:
The first thing to note about Gennadius is that her complexion, while on the lighter scale of skin tones, is tan from constant time spent outside. She stands at 5' 2" with a muscular build, mainly found in her arms and legs from constant activity and sword yielding. This said, she is not overly muscular either in a way that could be found unattractive or shocking. Her bust is on the smaller side, not needing much for support, and with a baggier shirt, not very noticeable. She isn't overly curvy either, but that being said, she does have a gentle enough curve at her waist, perhaps the most gentle part of her physique. Her body shape is very rectangular, perhaps part of her being short and muscular, weighing in at about 120lbs. She has various light, not really noticeable scars here and there from battle. However, she has two main ones both on her left thigh: A large burn line and a slice scar that crosses it on the outer part. Beyond that, she has a few minor scars along her side, and on her left arm from a fight involving bringing an assassin in.
Her face is very oval with softer curves there. Dark midnight eyes start out from light eyelashes, the shape of them rounded. She has a lower nose bridge with a surprisingly refined shape to it. Her lips are what would be considered rather average with a gentle cupid's bow and slightly fuller bottom lips. Her hair is a beautiful golden color that goes down a little below her shoulders, often held up in a ponytail. It has very slight curls to it, closer to be wavy than actually curled. She has one scar on her face, starting from the bottom of her chin coming halfway up her cheek from an injury in battle.
Finally, Gennadius tends to wear very average clothes as often as she can. This consists of a slightly oversized white or light khaki shirt tucked into brown leather breeches. While she has a sword, she no longer carries it on her nor does she have her old sword. She wears dark brown boots that go halfway up her thighs, made of smoothed leather. In the left one, there is a sheath and she keeps a dagger there. While she may not carry a sword, she does still prefer to remain armed just in case. She also keeps two thin leather strips tied around each wrist to easily tie her hair up or have them on hand.
Backstory:
Gennadius was born to Clarice and Davon Des Arluin. As a girl, Gennadius was always adventurous and getting into some kind of trouble, running through the streets, and often getting messy. She was quite the wild child, which was a trait not appreciated by her mother who held more of a tolerance for her. Not that Clarice did not love her child, but with pressures coming from Davon as well, the woman simply allowed her daughter the freedom she wanted and just worked to get through. Davon worked in a blacksmith's and liked to dabble in alcohol. The man held a large portion of self-importance and a want for power. He cared for his daughter but showed little affection as he was more interested in a son; another reason the girl was allowed to do as she wished.
When Gennadius turned 6, her mother gave birth to her brother. The young boy died within a week after getting some unknown illness. Clarice, torn by her son's death, also fell ill and died shortly after. It was said the woman died of a broken heart. Davon was left with no wife or son, just his daughter. The man took to drinking more until he could no longer hold his job and started spending the already limited funds on drink. In lieu of his excessive drinking, Gennadius was mostly left to fend for herself, turning to the streets and thievery to get enough to eat. She would often bring home extra for her father though the man paid little head. He grew more abusive as a year passed, portrayed in verbal yelling and throwing things. But the girl did her best, trying to support herself and her father through his drinking habits.
When the girl was 8, she returned home to find her father dead, a dagger in his chest. It was obvious that Davon had succumbed to the monsters in his mind and taken his own life, leaving his daughter alone.
Gennadius took to the streets after that, at this point much better in the art of pickpocketing and stealing. She traded favors with other small gangs, returning their protection for food. As she got older, she took control of most of the streets, growing stronger in the art of teaching herself to fight. Despite this, she took a strange liking to books and would often grab those and read them at night.
At one point, Drusus, the owner of the smithery, caught her in the act of trying to steal something from him. Remembering that she was the daughter of Davon, he showed her mercy and when she showed an interest, allowed her to help in the shop. By fourteen, the girl was skilled at smithing daggers and other small weapons. She found her way back to the streets though and only came around to earn some actual money by working for him as part-time work. By that point, thievery had become more of a pastime for her, a way to help assert dominance in the countryside town that was next to the castle. To say she was truly feral would be an understatement.
At 16, the royals passed through the town in a small parade. Gennadius saw an opportunity to snatch a book out of the queen's saddlebag, a bigger claim to fame for her if she could pull it off. The teenager managed it by slipping through the crowds and taking advantage of the royal's horse getting spooked. It seemed as though she would get away with it but the Captain of the guard had caught sight of the grab. Darius confronted Gennadius, and while he could not find the book, gave the girl two choices. Either she was to be brought before the king to face him for the crime of stealing or she would turn her life around and stay under his watch at the guard.
She didn't care for either option but went for the guard. Gennadius joined the group that protected the castle where Darius had her trained in the art of wielding a sword. Because of her agility and previous skill on the streets, she rose as one of the most skilled and often made it a point to prove it. She made bets and collected the winnings to occasionally return to the city and take a night at an inn to sleep in a warm bed in a private room. In her spare time, she would return to Drusus to continue working with smithery where she was at the point of making entire swords. It was in this manner that she attained her own private sword.
At age 19, as fate had it, she had an encounter with Prince Nilo Van Aslan when he fled into the night for some air. It was a brief meeting and both ended up going their own way. However, the king found out about the prince's escapade alone and ordered a guard be assigned to him, to which Darius, unaware of what had happened, assigned Gennadius as one of the finest guards. The woman was irritated by this, feeling as though what little freedoms she had were being torn away and loathed the prince for it.
However, after a suicide attempt on the prince's part, Gennadius saving him at the cost of getting her hand-sliced by snatching the sword. It was the start of a forming bond between the two. However, in an act of pride, the woman abandoned her post to protect her name and got injured in the process. Furious by her negligence, the king sent her to the Borders as punishment, an area torn by a border dispute that left constant fighting to protect it. The prince was able to get her sentence reduced to a month, which she did return but not without severe trauma. It was upon this return that her feelings for the prince were revealed. Feeling compromised, the woman left to join a campaign.
Gennadius was gone for two years, during which time she rose in rank to Colonel for her brilliant battle strategies. These strategies won the campaign and the army returned victorious. She was knighted for her brilliance and work and the raise in her status made it possible for her and the prince to pursue a relationship as neither had gotten over the other.
By 22, Gennadius married the prince and began light studies on the business of royalty, though she felt quite in the dark over it. Completely in love, their future seemed bright despite the challenges ahead. However, the bond brought on through trauma was destined to collapse, their personalities too different, and their way of life a deadly mixture waiting to blow up.
Right before the first anniversary, an attack on the royal scribe turned to chaos as the two fell into a deep disagreement about how to proceed with justice. After a meeting gone wrong and her suggestions treated as though she were a savage and monster, the damage was beyond repair. Gennadius stepped back from all her duties and the prince made no attempts to approach her afterward. After a couple weeks, she was served divorce papers. She signed them and left the kingdom, never to return. She left her sword, dog, and horse, carrying nothing but a few belongings, her dagger, and her life savings.
She arrived to Adonia and took on the job as a blacksmith again. She kept to herself, avoided people, and rented a small upper apartment. During a mental break within the first few months, her lower neighbor, Francine, knocked on her door. The older lady took pity on the young woman and began visiting her every evening with a cup of tea. After a year, the two were best friends and Gennadius began to pull from her shell, sharing bits of her past life of the widow. She never shared the entire story, but Fran helped her through some of the worst of her trauma, encouraging her daily and introducing her to an old war veteran who helped her through a lot of ptsd. By the second year, Gennadius finally settled into her new life and took on part-time work as a city night guard, and finally took the leap to buy herself a new horse, one brought in from the royal traders.
