Hi there, this is NOT MY WORLD, it was built by @Wraith who has done all of the hard legwork of conceiving a beautiful world. This is merely an exploration of one of the kingdoms in that world, with their permission, as a way to prepare for an upcoming political drama rp. This will probably end up being quite lengthy because I can't help but go down the research rabbit hole.

During the 9th century, IRL Spain was overtaken by Islamic Muslims, as well as a pittance of modern-day Europe, and made into a new country known as Al-Andalus. It was noted to be historically very LGBT+ friendly and racially & religiously tolerant, although conflicts did arise at times. Catholics were definitely the minority at the time, until the late 10th century when Catholic Europe decided to "reclaim" Al-Andalus as their own land, part of their religious conquest of Islam.

In Espanya, (or Espania) the dominant religion has almost always been Iurasha, (eye-your-ash-ah) a bitheistic religion centered around two gods, Yuta (You-tah) & Yakhuda (Yak-who-dah) (similar to the verbs for 'give' and 'take' in Arabic) but a steadily growing population of Espanya believes in Alyresi a religion that teaches that one day, Yuta and Yakhuda (Known also to them as Alhaya (life) and Almawt (death)) will have a child who will bring about the end of the world, but for their true followers who will be given a new paradise.

Espanya was a self-sufficient city-state before the ruling family of Ealga united it under the banner of the Kingdom of Europa. They used to be ruled by a royal family who was considered the purest line of the first people and was rumored to have magic. Now the region is mostly run but noble families and merchants. It is a place of great learning and scientific research, as well as the exploration of culture and experimentation. Free love is common in Espanya, and gender as an identity is something more often explored here than anywhere else. As a result of this, alternative genders and sexualities have become more accepted in most of Europa, although obviously, it's not perfect.

Espanya has a friendly relationship with Polenia and Ealga. It has strong trade relationships with Ealga and an exclusive contract with the royal family for their glass and wine production. They have a large export of medicines, metals, glass, and wine, and a moderate export of seafood. They're a good source of iron and they had one of the first glass factories in existence. 63% of their useable farmland is used for vineyards, which means they import the majority of their fruits, grains, and vegetables.

They have fraught relations with Gallia, who have rival merchanting operations, and are often lobbying to steal their exclusive contract. The two regions tend to get very heated about just about everything, and they can often turn into duels if left unchecked. They have a bloody feudal history between them that makes them a lot less than friendly to start out with, although now it's mostly translated into contract disagreements and vindictive trade blocking. They have neutral relations with Brittanica and Italia, but some bad blood with Scandia due to a prior era of piracy.

Bordered by the Sierra Ventossa to the left, and the ocean everywhere else, Espanya can sometimes feel like an island community, with so many close-knit communities and little travel before they were unified into Europa. They have a strong naval presence and their boats go just about everywhere on the eastern coast of Europa. These ships are owned mostly by merchant families. These merchants make up the majority of the wealthy upper class and have political sway. They tend to own most property and businesses in Espanya.

The most powerful family is the Ziryab family, who own the rights to the contract with the royal family and own the most property. They don't have many ships, as they do most trading over land, and they are based in the capital, Almería. They have three daughters, the eldest, Rahma (she/they) is potentially an heir to the family estate, although her parents seem to favor their youngest, Bahseer (he/him). The middle child, Abdeebah (they/them) is proving to be a worthy merchant in their own rights and is doing their best to make a name for themselves out of their family's shadow. Rahma has recently been married off to the Princess Grazyna of Polenia in order to secure her family's ties to the king.

Espanya tends to take after Arabic and Jewish naming traditions, with the occasional Celtic name thrown in due to the modern integration & unification efforts.

currently inspired by 9th century Ukraine - will post photos later.
