[BACKGROUND]
Hawk was born into a wealthy family, one with nobility and standing. He was the 5th child however, and the prospects of finding eligible partners for him were slim so far removed from inheritance. As he grew he was tasked with managing the more mundane aspects of the family's assets. Their land was in a mountainous region, on the border and he was set to managing the most remote parts of it. He learned from those who he supervised, logging, mountain climbing, combat to deal with incursions from neighbors and other threats. His wealth of experience grew, as did his body. He became a giant of a man, his thick arms honed by felling trees and in the harshness of combat, his endurance shaped by the mountains themselves as he climbed their heights, hauling goods up by rope, and sometimes strength alone.
His appetite and his size became a thing of pride for the folk under his leadership, and contests of strength and skill were created to gather others and challenge their lordling. While by no means infallible, he held the records in several of the games and challenges devised to test the mettle of any who would enter and was a local legend in that regard. Despite that, the rest of the realm was largely unaware of the last son of the Barrick family.
It wasn't until a carriage entered their land, carrying the family of Duke Grier, a notably close to the royalty man of great influence. A fire broke out after a fierce lightning storm, and despite making a break for it the carriages route was cut off. Hawk led a group through the flame filled forests racing through the smoke and heat to reach a mountain and climbed it and were able to climb down the mountain and hoist the Dukes family to safely before they were engulfed.
Unknown to him at the time, while he was saving the dukes family the fire had spread and devastated the land, razing the main town and the Manor of his family. His family and the townsfolk had evacuated but the fire spread so fast it cut them off and nary a soul made it out alive. The land was devastated, all of its resources and people gone, and only the last son left alive.
When Duke Grier heard of the actions and the stature of the man that led the efforts to save his family, Hawk was given a place in the dukes retinue. There his stature and skills served him well as he was given increasing amounts of responsibility. He was still largely unknown, but the dukes aspirations were grand and he would involve himself in many affairs that required men os skill. There his reputation among the dukes men was one of iron determination, and resolute will.
