Background:​

▸ Born to a stony police detective father and a benign home-care nurse mother, Maxime grew up in the sprawling metropolitan city of Vancouver. His parents, their relationship a series of arguments, infidelity, and brief periods of separation divorced a month after he graduated high school. He has a younger sister, Emilie, who lives in Nanaimo with her husband and their three children.​

▸ Maxime joined the Vancouver Police Department immediately after obtaining a college degree in law enforcement and quickly moved up the ranks to become one of the city's top homicide detectives.​

▸ Several years into his career as a detective, Maxime began dating and eventually married Christine Carter, a whip-smart, ambitious forensic pathologist working for the BC Coroners Service. His father died of a sudden cardiac arrest later that same year.​

▸ Corruption and apathy on the part of his co-workers only added to the day-to-day stress of being confronted with the vilest aspects of human nature, and over the years it began to take a toll on his mental health—and his marriage.​

▸ After several failed attempts at starting a family, unfulfilled promises to slow down and take care of himself, and eventually being placed on stress leave following a brief, but deeply concerning mental breakdown, Christine moved into her own apartment and Maxime found himself in simultaneous career and relationship limbo.​

▸ Not wanting to waste his potential, but unable to justify to the department psychologists re-immersing him into such a high-stress environment, Maxime was assigned to the RCMP's Serious Crimes Division located in the sleepy Vancouver Island tourist town of Comox. While Maxime loudly protested the relocation to friends and colleagues alike, he admitted to his psychologist that it was probably for the best. Christine declined his offer to reconcile their relationship and make the move with him, but she promised to visit.​
