“Hurry! Hurry!”

“No flying in the halls!”

“Places, places. Everybody settle down.”

The classroom is all a buzz as all sorts of magical persons take their seats. From fairies to goblins and young witches. An odd menagerie of fairytale creatures. They settle in their seats. Cloaks thrown over the backs of chairs. Small pocket portals opening just long enough for notebooks and pens to be pulled out. The murmurs hush, as attention is drawn to the front of the room.

“Alright.” A woman, maybe only four foot tall with silvered hair. She pushes up her glasses and adjusts the pastel blue cuffs of her sleeves. Clear fairy wings twitch and catch the light behind her. “Class is in session.”

“As you all know, your final at the end of the year will have you assigned to a young protagonist. You will be graded on how meaningful your impact is on their story. You just need to figure out if you’ll help, or hinder.” Her skirt sways around her ankles as she paces across the front. “Today we’ll cover cases of both.”
She pulls out a wand from practically nowhere and casts towards the blank wall. In pops of sparkles, images appear. “Let’s start with Rumpelstiltskin. An impact so big, the story is named after him. I’m sure you’ve all heard the story. ‘A trinket, some jewelry, and I’ll turn all this straw to gold.’ Then of course asking for their first born. I’ll leave the ethics debate of that to your psychology classes. However, the lesson I want to teach with his story isn’t one of greed. It’s to not underestimate your protagonist.”

“His task for them to keep the child was for them to guess his name. Then he got caught saying it out loud. You may fault him for being so foolish, but really he thought he was safe and in private. The prince had sent his guard to follow and spy on Rumpel. I’d hardly blame that on him. What I want you to take from this tale is not to be paranoid, but to be cautious. Don’t think you’ve won till the deal is over.” An image of Rumple throwing a small tantrum appears then dissolve from the wall as she moves onto the next tale.

“Now, who can tell me the names of the three good fairies from Sleeping Beauty?” She waits, but there’s silence. A few murmurs, but no real answers. “Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. But, if I asked you about the evil fairy, then you’d all know Maleficent I’m sure.”

“Infamy gets your name remembered, but it also risks your life. Keep that in mind. And, how far are you willing to go for your pride? Is keeping up with something for that long really worth it?”

“Another story, someone you might not think of. The Enchantress from Beauty and the Beast. She’s a foot note, only mentioned for the first few pages. The impact she leaves however is huge. She teaches the prince a hard lesson and makes sure it sinks in.”

The wall changes again, from a stained glass rose, to a pumpkin. “Not all spells and impacts have to be so serious. Sometimes you just want to make someone happy. You grant them one night of happiness. A pretty dress. Some glass shoes. Then everything turns out perfect by accident.”

“It all just depends on want you want to be. Famous, or infamous. Helpful or hurtful. Look at the story from every angle, and pick your path from there.” She concludes. “Now, any questions?”
