Malibu
Unicorn Princess
Hello, Inner Sanctum community!
My name is Malea/Malibu, and I'm a refugee from the now defunct Guilty Pleasures. Regardless of what happens with that site, I figure it doesn't hurt to have multiple writing communities to be a part of and to meet new people and partners. So, with that said, allow me to tell you a little (or a lot) about myself!
Again, my name is Malea, but feel free to call me Lea, Mali, or whatever else is convenient for you. For a brief explanation on the name, when I was nine or ten years old I insisted everyone start calling me Mallie because I didn't like my name. My dad went a step further and started calling me Mallie-boo which eventually got shorthanded into Malibu.
I am currently twenty-five years old but I swear I have the mentality of a six-year-old girl, the body of a ninety-year-old, and the maturity of a twelve-year-old boy. I'm a non-identical twin and come from a very large, very close-knit family. I was born in Ohio, but we moved to Washington State when I was two years old. I grew up in a small town just south of the Canadian border and spent my undergrad years in Seattle. I am very passionate about the Pacific Northwest and still consider it my home even if I don't live there any more. I love everything about the city and the state (including its sports teams, sorry!). I dye my hair, have never worn glasses, and am stupidly pale (my nickname from middle school and beyond was "Milk").
I finished my undergrad in December of 2016 and double majored in Communications Studies and International Studies as well as minored in Gender Studies. I then relocated to Denver, Colorado to attend a Master's program in Publishing. I completed that in August of 2017. My dream career is in publishing, ideally in editing. But, as my time in my Master's program taught me there are so many facets of the industry and I'm excited to try my hand at many of them! While I am loving living in this beautiful state, I'm also looking forward to starting my career, ideally in New York City or San Francisco. In the meantime, I'm working as an executive assistant and department coordinator at a local non-profit and saving for a bold move to chase my dreams. I love learning and, if I could afford it, I would be a perpetual student. I just love being around knowledge and academia!
I am obsessed with (in no particular order): unicorns, glitter, peanut butter, candles, fairies, tea, cream cheese, rainbows, nail polish, wine, otters, poppies, Christmas lights, mermaids, socks, owls, books, dolphins, eyeliner, scarves, dogs, superhero movies, blankets, cake, pineapples, stuffed animals, lipstick, coloring books, tights, forget-me-nots, roller coasters, pasta, crime documentaries, American football, sweatshirts, Disney movies, hiking, opals, and boots (among a multitude of other things). I don't like chocolate, wearing pants, spiders, feet, or coffee (which is kind of ironic given I'm from Seattle). I'm a Christian, lactose intolerant, and, yes, I do use a neti pot for seasonal allergies.
I love listening to music and attending concerts, though I've been able to do the latter less and less as my adult financial responsibilities have grown. I don't necessarily have a preferred genre though I have certain genres that I listen to more than others. I love recommendations for music and exploring new genres and artists since I like to be diverse in my tastes! Some of my favorite bands/artists of all time include (but again, are not limited to): Relient K, Cartel, The Cab, Paramore, Ruelle, NF, Ellie Goulding, Starset, Owl City, Breathe Carolina, Hawk Nelson, Pink Floyd, All Time Low, Safetysuit, Parachute, MercyMe, Forever the Sickest Kids, 30 Seconds to Mars, A Skylit Drive, Demi Lovato, Justin Nozuka, Lifehouse, We Are the In Crowd, The Spill Canvas, The Summer Set, RED, Kelly Clarkson, The Eagles, Backstreet Boys, Imogen Heap, Blackmill, Florence and the Machine, Mutemath, Fall Out Boy, N*SYNC, Flyleaf, Ingrid Michaelson, Anberlin, Fiona Apple, Beyonce, He Is We, Lady Antebellum, Justin Timberlake, Lindsey Sterling, Jessie J, Panic! at the Disco, Destiny's Child, and Skillet (again, among others).
Animals are one of my favorite things in the world! When I was younger, I lived with five dogs, three cats, a turtle, two love birds, two hamsters, a handful of fish, five horses, three cows, two goats, a pig, a handful of chickens, and four siblings (those count, right?). I currently am mom to a senior dog and a grumpy hedgehog.
Reading is absolutely my favorite hobby. Ninety-five percent of my free time is spent reading in some way, shape, or form. I'm a bit of a YA junkie, but I also love reading biographies and memoirs and, in recent years, have branched out into adult fiction and fantasy. My bookshelf is literally packed with favorites and it would take me far too long to list all of my favorites. But, for an idea, some of my favorites include The Great Gatsby, The Mortal Instruments and all subsequent prequels and sequels, the Spellcaster series by Claudia Gray (and almost anything she writes, really), the Graceling series, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atlas Shrugged, A Great and Terrible Beauty, The Chronicles of Narnia, A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and pretty much anything by Meg Cabot.
I enjoy television though, like I mentioned earlier, I'd rather be reading. I have a giant watchlist on Netflix and Hulu that I may or may never get around to watching because I just don't spend much of my time watching TV, but I'm trying to get through it! For the most part, I tend to watch medical dramas, crime documentaries, or Say Yes to the Dress, if that tells you anything about my taste in television. I also have a soft spot for cartoons and children's programming and I've enjoyed My Little Pony and Gravity Falls in recent years.
The boy in my life is kind of a big deal. His name is Adam and we have quite literally been friends since the first grade. We began dating in 2008 and we've been engaged since 2012 (no, you aren't reading that wrong). Unfortunately, our academic pursuits have forced us to be long distance for the past eight or so years of our relationship, but we manage to make it work. I think he is quite possibly the most incredible, generous, intelligent, compassionate, patient, and loving person I have ever had the privilege of knowing and I cherish the time we do get to spend together! He's studying to be a doctor and he wants to go into surgery or emergency trauma and he is working so hard to achieve his goals and dreams and I honestly am just so proud of him. I really like this kid, okay?
Alright, well, thanks for sticking around listening to me babble on endlessly about myself. In short, I'm a cool person and you're a cool person, so we should be friends. Anyways, I hope you feel enlightened and I look forward to meeting y'all!
