Honestly, I worry that (riff off a much better) poem is in poor taste, but I couldn't figure out how to spend five syllables to say what I needed to say in a gentler way. Ah, well. Hopefully it entertained some of you.
"Keep, dear writers, your magic pretty boys!" I cry
Into a careless void. "Give me your weak, your poor,
Your silly, sexless bastards yearning to rise high,
The riotous refuse of roleplay's horny core.
Send your mundane men, strange and struggling, for I
Stand waiting with challenge by story's golden door!"
I am 31, queer-friendly, rather high-octane, and looking for a plot-first story with an MxM romance subplot, hopefully long term. Romance is not actually required, especially if we have an intriguing plot and our characters have zero chemistry.
I like immersive, descriptive writing – I have found this helps me build on what my partner is throwing down, and it helps make sure I am on the same page as my partner – as much as that is possible, anyway. Also, I have a TTRPG background and would love to try a freeform RP style where unplanned stuff just happens, or secrets/puzzles/hints are there in the text, etc. But each RP differs depending on the partner and that's not required if you have a style you prefer.
We might work well if you like these:
- Direct communication. If this is scary, we really might not work well.
- Proactive partner that occasionally floods you with ideas
- Partner with an engineer's personality (as opposed to a poet's)
- Action!
- Humor, adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, crime, general optimism about humanity and life with a side of horrible darkness
- Detailed, descriptive writing
- Combat scenes with varying levels of violence ranging from cartoon to horrible things with consequences (Remember it says detailed, descriptive writing above this. I will not write anything edgy without your consent but I do not want to surprise anyone with this. Also, combat is not necessary for a good story.)
- I keep meticulous track of limbs and objects, and I know about the ol’ give and take. I’ve found it takes an incredible communicator to write combat, so please keep that in mind if you want to go here.
- Flawed characters, underdogs, people who aren't that special but will become that way through their actions in the story
- Difficult problems with no real solution, such as moral problems
- Trope deconstruction
- Relationship and character development through shared challenges
- Some mild worldbuilding & having side characters in the name of creating a fun setting
- Pure slice of life, pure romance, romantasy, drama as a genre
- Pure smut, smokin' hot sexy pretty characters
- Gender roles played straight, even in queer relationships (this includes seme/uke, dom/sub, top/bottom, and for FxF sometimes butch/femme)
- Abuse
- Gratuitous trauma or mental illness
- Power fantasy played straight
- Stories that focus on character separated from their existence in the world (I have heard these fall under the "character-driven stories" umbrella, but I can see this term being confusing)
- Semi-literate writing. Typos are fine, I just need to be able to read it!
- In a post-apocalyptic world, robot patrols left over from a mysterious war that never ended still walk the wasteland. Their behavior is predictable and well understood by survivors and scrappers. One day, they all change their behavior at once. Genre is probably modern/sci-fi, could be fantasy or other though.
- A visits B, a prisoner or a gladiator, likely in a fantasy setting in the vein of D&D. A is busting B out because A needs B’s knowledge or abilities for their own agenda, but various parties stand in the way and will move to intercept or kill A and B.
- A, a member of a modern cybercriminal group, gets tangled with other criminals and law enforcement when a job goes well and an insane payout is had by his group, which falls apart over the money. B is a corrupt cop, an upstanding cop, a hitman, a criminal, etc. Many ways this could go depending on what you want to bring – let’s talk it out. For this one, I have a rough character concept in mind for A, who is kind of this seedy, little bit gross fella.
A is a witch in a modern city. Witches fight an unseen and mostly peaceful battle amongst each other for territory in the city – the purpose is to control moving leylines. One of the matriarchs has died under mysterious circumstances recently and caused a power vacuum, affecting A’s life. B is a familiar A summoned and made a pact with for assistance.- In a sci-fi dystopia, scientist A saves B, a facility guard, turning B into a killing machine (literally) cyborg with experimental tech. Corporations that own the tech, enemies of the owners, etc. are all interested in B now. This was initially going to be a ghost in the machine kinda thing, where B's brain got transplanted and their body isn't even humanoid. It was gonna be about the origin of love separated from sexual desire, but yeah. Might be a tough ask for an RP partner, so that's flexible!
- In a more humorous, self-aware vein, A is a Mary Sue and B is on the surface much less impressive and for some reason resistant to his charms. Mary Sue might be able to do anything or have anything or win anything for completely nonsensical reasons, but character B remains totally unmoved by this...because character B has the belief that power, beauty, and ability are separate from a person's quality. There are a lot of ways this could go, but genre is probably satire/humor/superhero.
- A couple of side characters embark on their own unnoticed quest. For example, in a heroic fantasy plot where a pair of famous, powerful knights go on a quest to slay a dragon, we'd be following two average guards who perhaps discover a plot against the heroes and resolve it without anyone even knowing! I think it would be cool if the heroes were kind of there in the background constantly, ex. the main characters followed them around or something. Can be any genre, though the listed example is probably humor/fantasy/action.
- A and B find themselves trapped in a strange, sterile habitat by very advanced aliens that want to study them (maybe Tralfamadorians of Slaughterhouse Five vibes). Probably sci-fi, also a lot of ways this could go.
Here are a few random things off the top of my head I have enjoyed throughout the years to help you gauge compatibility:
- Books: Catch-22, Invisible Man, Good Omens, the original Sherlock Holmes series, Brave New World (currently reading and would be happy to write a horrific dystopia)
- Movies: The Iron Giant, Pulp Fiction, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Stranger than Fiction, Brokeback Mountain, Into the Spiderverse, Beau Travail, Queer, Midnight, Hard to Be a God (yes, the nasty 2013 one)
- Anime: Mob Psycho 100/One Punch Man, Devilman Crybaby, Panty & Stocking
- Ancient Fanfiction: Good Lives by jibrailis (Naruto, KakaGai), Designations Congruent with Things by cleanwhiteroom (Pacific Rim, Newt/Hermann), various Stargate: Atlantis John/Rodney works (I have never seen this show but boy can these writers write!)
- Video Games: Disco Elysium (in progress), Death Stranding, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Genshin Impact
To boil it down, I really like dichotomies. A favorite of mine, to read or to write: silly characters with the range to feel deep, painful emotion. I do like writing and playing against all sorts of character archetypes, though!
I’ve also got a technical, scientific background and I sometimes do research for roleplays if I get serious. I don’t expect the same of my partners – please don’t be intimidated.
- Currently looking to write MxM but I flex, chars 25+
- I've been writing since 09/2024. That's right, all you 10+ year veterans, I'm green. Because I'm so green, I enjoy experimenting. If you would like me to try something new with you, such as a new writing style, I am all for it. I'm also happy to discuss writing in a technical fashion since I want to improve.
- Prefer picking up on written description over using faceclaims. No issues with faceclaims, but I generally don't have a strong interest in appearance beyond how a character's life has impacted it.
- Always third person, tense negotiable
- I’m a collaborative, open-minded writer that aims to move story along and isn’t afraid to make characters lose
- Open to writing smut, but minimal experience so expect hilarity. Also cool with fade-to-black. Very comfortable with violence, though I tend to avoid writing characters that will just let themselves be abused. Discuss limits with me!
- Generally write proactive characters with strong drives to action, which may influence plot direction in unexpected ways. I also focus a lot on the world outside my character because I like providing things for my partner to interact with.
- I'm not really here for wish fulfillment or escapism, just to have fun and maybe learn a thing or two. So I'm down to include difficult topics such as homophobia, dystopian structures, etc. I will say that I intend to handle these topics with sensitivity and self-awareness if you are interested, and the plot shouldn't revolve entirely around them.
- Prefer talking OOC and maybe making a friend (RP is better if you know what your partner likes.)
- Very forward and proactive personality. If you're cool with both "yes, and..." and "no, but...", we'll work well. Don’t fear talking to me about anything you need to keep having fun.
- Very open to constructive criticism. About my writing, about OOC communication, about how I handle plot and move the story along...I want to hear it!
- If you need a break, just let me know. No problem!
- Generally available on weekdays for OOC communication
- Expect average post to be 200-600 words
- Flexible post length based on situation. Prefer shorter posts during snappy dialogue or fast scenes with interaction
- Would like to avoid long posts full of dialogue where the next post must respond to each line one at a time. Let's try and make it read more like a book if possible...but I know oftentimes that is not possible!
- Post frequency varies from multiple times a day to as low as once a week, averaging multiple times a week. Also depends on post length
