The ladies of the San Felipe de Neri church (Albuquerque 1881) that made them decide to place a personal ad in Matrimonial News. Their goal was to find a suitable young lady to join with onee of the town’s most eligible bachelors - whether he would be keen on the idea or not. Technically the ad was a scam. But they meant well.

NOTICE TO RESPECTABLE YOUNG LADIES SEEKING MATRIMONY

The Ladies’ Auxiliary of San Felipe de Neri church, having taken a charitable and practical interest in the well-being of one of our community’s most eligible (if somewhat unsuspecting) bachelors, hereby place this notice on his behalf.

Aged 30, is a rancher of sound means, good land, and steady habits. Strong and healthy, he is known to be utterly honest, sober, industrious, and dependable in all matters of work and word. Though not given to boasting (nor, we note, to courting), he possesses a kind disposition, a strong back, and a home in need of a capable and cheerful mistress.

It has come to our attention that, left to his own devices, he would continue indefinitely in a state of bachelorhood, subsisting on poorly baked bread, mended shirts of questionable quality, and far too much solitude. We therefore take it upon ourselves—confident he will thank us in time—to assist in securing him a proper wife.

The lady suited to this position should be of good moral standing, possessed of patience, good humor, and a willingness to improve both a household and its occupant. Frontier life requires resilience, but offers in return the promise of stability, honest affection, and a place of one’s own.

Desired Qualifications of the Prospective Bride:

  • Of good moral character and reputable standing
  • Between 20 and 35 years of age, with sound health
  • Capable in household management, including cooking, mending, and keeping a tidy home
  • Possessed of patience, good humor, and a steady temperament
  • Willing to adapt to the rigors and rewards of frontier life
  • Some familiarity with gardening, livestock, or basic medical care is most welcome
  • Able to read and write, so as to maintain proper correspondence and accounts
  • A fondness for community, faith, and simple pleasures over city luxuries
In exchange, he offers a respectable home, financial security, and, though he may not say so outright, a loyal and devoted heart.

Serious inquiries may be directed to the Ladies’ Auxiliary, who will see that all suitable correspondence is…properly encouraged.

— By Order of the Ladies’ Auxiliary Society

The ladies, of course, would expect photos and pedigree of any potential suitors. However, this RP could take any of a dozen different twists. It wouldn’t be hard to determine WHERE the ad was placed. And from that, determine who the bachelor is … and bypass the ladies altogether.

You see, the ad reflects what the Ladies of the Auxilliary want for him - NOT necessarily what HE would want.

Dr Jonathan Rhand owns a 6400 acre farm a little south of Albuquerque. He is also the owner and founder of Rhand Applied Sciences Company.

Rhand Farm (6400 acres)

Note: His farm is pretty new. What is listed below are his planned crops. Things like trees will take years to grow. He only moved into the area about 4 years ago and started the farm two years ago. His Applied Sciences Company has been providing his seed capital.

Crops
Pecans: Often the top cash crop, with New Mexico frequently leading national production.
Chile Peppers: A top national producer, famous for Hatch green chiles.
Hay: Alfalfa hay is a major agricultural staple.
Onions: The state ranks high nationally in summer onion production.
Greenhouse/Nursery: A significant portion of agricultural sales, including ornamental plants.
Pistachios & Peanuts: Major nut crops grown in the state.
Field Crops: Corn, cotton, wheat, and sorghum.
Vegetables/Fruits: Squash, pumpkins, potatoes, apples, and grapes.

Animals
A few cows (at least one or two dairy)
A few pigs
A few horses
Chickens
Fish hatchery (still under construction)

And now for the Spoiler:
This RP has an Outlander element to it. Jon is from the future. He was thrown into the past a few years ago and has been forced to adapt to living in it. He’s done very well for himself just through hard work. He has been living by the motto of "When in Rome" as much as he can tolerate. He has begun to make himself scarce as families have begun to introduce daughters ...
