Overview
Sterling is the first settlement of Planet Midas 7V9, created when terraforming teams made their first landing. It's since grown into the port of choice and travel hub of the planet as a whole. Many other cities have come to be on the planet since then, but it's consistently topped charts on population size and GDP. It has a well-deserved reputation as a center of trade and cultural hotspot, a melting pot of different immigrant cultures, and is also known for its high crime rates, its gray market enterprises, and its red light districts.
While high-class businesses grow their wealth in towers made of glass and steel, illegal trades and services flourish among a good portion of common citizens. The government and law enforcement try in vain to crack down on the most dangerous criminal activity, using strategies like higher surveillance, more laws, stricter punishments. But most crime still goes under the radar due to powerful cartels, bribery rings, and back channel deals with government officials.
Population
The majority population is stock humans. One population minority are humans with animal features from gene-splicing experiments. Another minority are animal beings made sentient from other genetic and biotech experimentation. A third minority are agentic robots, which vary in levels of sentience, but which can be found operating at various levels in the city (regular labor, medical diagnosing, bounty hunting).
Cybernetic enhancements are common, ranging from aesthetics (equivalent to tattoos) to medical (replacement organs) to performance enhancing (military or mercenary level upgrades).
Locations
Slums - these are the parts of the city that have the highest amount of people and social friction, the least amount of law enforcement, the highest rates of violent and nonviolent crime.
Red Districts - these are the parts of the city which pander to hedonistic pleasure, such as drug use and prostitution.
Grey Districts - these are the parts of the city which provide equipment and services to the first two, in particular surgery, enhancements, information and weaponry.
Blue Districts - these are the parts of the city which serve corporate interests, skyscraper buildings, public services like airports and major stops for trains and buses.
Green Districts - these are the interesting places that are geared towards those who have money, tourist attractions, gardens and parks, video arcades, and swank apartment buildings.
