About Me!
Who are you, how long have you been writing, and what kind of things do you like to write
Hi, I’m Lich. Some folks here have called me Nian, which is actually fine by me tbh - it makes me think of Nimue for some reason, which makes me grin. It’s also just close enough to Nyan cat for me to date myself lmao.
"I’m looking for an RP partner.
I’ve been in the mood to do some historical fiction / lowish-fantasy stuff. Leaning more toward low fantasy - I like the idea of it taking place in real-world locations, but I’m not married to hyper-accuracy when it comes to time and place.
The kind of story I’m looking to tell is about criminals, spies, war - the underbelly of the world. I have one serious story arc below, and the rest are kind of character hooks - but I’m also open to hearing ideas for plots, worlds, and smaller stories outside of what's posted here.
Also, I’m a big fan of not sharing everything about my characters, so there’s room for surprises as we go! Mystery is fun! And the best part of roleplay, in my experience, is discovering the story with your RP partner. :3
Right now I'm wfh contractor, so I have a lot of time. I think even if things pick up, once a week should be doable.
I like my rp on the longer side - (600-1000 per character depending on scene etc), but I won't judge you if it's a shorter post as long as it's clear that thought and effort were put in!

As long as there's an in-world or in-story reason for the carnage, I'm always down for a little blood'n'guts.

When I first joined, it was a pretty hard stance on "nah" but now I'm in the camp of - if the story goes there, it goes there lol. I will say, I don't want sex to be the center of the story. It can be a part of it - I have characters for whom lust is a major flaw - but that's a trait and occasional complication, not the point of the story itself, if that makes sense. Either way, I'm open to conversation about boundaries and comfort levels.
Any additional notes you want to add?
I'll definitely have a primary character I play - one who is the main person in whatever story we throw together. But if it's one of my plots, I tend to throw in side characters and have some fun with them because ADHD go brrrrrrrr! You're more than welcome to do the same.
Also, this is NOT the only genre I RP, I've done modern fantasy, Victorian Horror, High-Fantasy, and even briefly dipped my toes into Cyberpunk. So feel free to reach out even if you're not feeling this specific vibe right now!
Settings / Stories
~Vibe~
All the characters I have examples of are historical-ish fantasy figures. I'm thinking Elizebethian-esque.
Magic - I’m open to small acts of illusion, charm spells, uncanny luck, and subtle fey references. I’m even open to non-humans so long as they’re human enough to blend in with normal society. The idea is that people know or suspect magic exists - potions are a thing, for example - but it’s not like Forgotten Realms where Dragonborns are marching about in the open. Magic is subtle, rare, and at times genuinely terrifying. Vampires are cool, witches are cool, fey are rad, and I'd even be open to discussing werewolves - so long as they're somewhat grounded, yano?
Organizations and Primary Antagonists
The Oracle - the Oracle is a secret organization of - well - seers - who use their ability to pierce the veil and see into the future to push wars, peace treaties, marriages, etc. in Europe. They do this through assassinations - taking contracts from notable figures that push events in a direction they prefer, and sending their spies out to manipulate world events. Those who know, know. Those who don't know consider the Oracle a fantasy. The Oracle claims to be pushing Europe toward it's greatest age of peace in centuries - but since they're the only ones with the all-seeing mages, no one can really confirm that.
Di'Antoni Military/Spy Network - Niccolo Di'Antoni is a merchant and warlord who took over Naples and has been slowly claiming territory across the southern Italian peninsula. His next goal is Rome - and something much bigger and more terrifying, though only those closest to him know what. He is a tyrant - and since the violent death of his only daughter, has grown increasingly cruel, erratic, and unconcerned with restraint.
Plot Idea:
Niccolò Di ’Antoni has been consolidating power under the guise of loyalty and trade for decades, and his plans are reaching a crux. Any noble house not actively aligned with his interests is declared suspect. And as they are suspect, he has decided that they oughtn't exist anymore. This goes for his allies abroad - his network and mercenaries have locations across Europe. In truth, this purge serves a darker purpose: one that only those closest to him can know. Perhaps you were one of them - but something changed, and the consequences of that knowledge have come to bite you in the ass on one terrible Autumn evening.
Estates are seized. Homes are burned. Nobility are pulled from their down pillows.
My character | Lizbet Harrington | Theme: Nature BoyLizbet Harrington did everything right. She married a respectable man, though his title was fairly new. Her household was orderly, her alliances neutral, her conduct unimpeachable. For the most part, anyway. Decades of her life dedicated to the pursuit of perfection: wasted. Fruitless.
It did not matter. Her husband was exposed as a fraud and killed. Her children were taken - why take the children? Her title, protections, and careful restraint vanished in a single night. It oughtn't have been possible. She was - after all - a countess! The crown should have stepped in - other members of the court. The smell of smoke filled her nostrils. A sharp pain in her head and then - the steady wheels of a wagon beneath her. Steel biting into her wrists. Terror. Confusion. Caged -
Breathe. Someone will notice.
What if they don't?
Then I shall find a way. I always do. There is always a path -
Perhaps - yes - that person - there.
Your character:
You had a prior connection to Niccolò. Whatever that connection was, it did not protect you. Everything you had was taken or destroyed. You awaken in the moving cage with a handful of others. What you feel, how you respond, and what you want next are entirely up to you. If you're interested but have no idea what kind of character you'd want to play, reach out! We can talk through some ideas.
Pre-Existing In-World Characters
Luca | L’Ombra | ThemeLuca is known for being the captain of Niccolo Di’Antoni’s guard and the tyrant's right-hand man. To the nobility and merchants whom he visits on Niccolo’s behalf, he is known as a charismatic and even charming character. (Because they are, of course, idiots.) This is slightly undermined by an uncomfortable truth. Those who betray Niccolo tend to go missing - and many attribute these disappearances to Luca, their last point of contact. (Stronzi, all of them.) A ruthless criminal, then.
Worse. A bootlicking coward to an unhinged warlord.
Well, they shall see, won't they?
To the Oracle, he is known as L'Ombra. The shadow. A pointless and pretentious title to be sure, but to become one of their spies is to take on a mantle. A responsibility. There can be no room for errors in judgment. Especially when The Oracle has trusted him with so important a mission. He is pushed forward on the path of destiny - toward a fixed point that began when he was...well...it was very long ago. And there is no comfort to be found in the past.
He is cold, methodical, and regimented. He doesn't like interruptions or changes to his carefully organized plans. He is an excellent liar, and rumor has it he might actually have a sense of humor.
(No witnesses have come forth to validate this claim. )
Luca booked a ship to England in the final year leading up to completing his mission for The Oracle, but something went wrong. A great storm blew his ship off course, crashing it into the Scottish coast. He has to get to London but…well...You know what they say about the best laid plans.
Nine lives. That's what they say about cats. Funny - no one ever said they were good ones.
Zara - the orphaned English child fighting for her bread, was not happy.
Zara - the girl held up by her wrists, and told to serve as protector and lady's maid to Concetta Di 'Antoni was not happy.
Her third life beneath the Neapolitan sun was warm. She grew from a yowling street urchin into the closest friend to the daughter of one of the most dangerous men in Europe.
Zara was fiercely passionate and unendingly loyal to the family, and for the first time in her life, happy.
But this was but three of her nine. And all lives must come to an end.
Zara died - died in a heavily perfumed room on a too-hot summer day. She was covered in the blood of the woman she loved.
Yes, Zara is dead.
It is Ellien you will contend with now.
Ellien's story can take many turns. We could start shortly after she returns to England, half-starved, feral, and very much walking a knife's edge. Or we could tell a story that takes years after she has settled into her new life. But regardless, Ellien is ruthlessly pragmatic, violent, flighty, and physical - a thief, a murderer, driven by survival, constantly fighting her own attraction to men and women alike and - sometimes - she acts without thinking. Ok, well, alright. She often acts without thinking.
Tomas | Santo del Dolor | Theme
Tomas is a complicated man. (Aheh.) An assassin by trade, new to The Oracle, and deeply religious. His specialty is torture - he is an artist when it comes to causing pain. It earned him his title within the fold. The Spaniard is not known for ducking into shadows, picking locks, or doing anything with subtlety. Thus - he is often traveling with a fellow assassin or looking for a rogue to hire so that he may gain access to whatever poor bastard got on the wrong side of his new masters. When he is not prying information from people, he is drinking and entertaining strangers in taverns and brothels (though he refuses to partake in sins of the flesh). When he is not drinking, entertaining strangers, or talking someone's ear off-
Wait a moment, amigo. That cannot be right. Mierda - that cannot be allowed to happen. He cannot be left with his thoughts. He cannot remember the screams. He cannot fathom the quiet laughter of a family beneath a cloudless Catalonian sky. Quickly! Work! Someone pass him a knife! No? Perhaps a glass of wine then? A cunning mystery to solve? What about - a - a joke! Anything...
He is both in mourning for the life he once had and living each day as if it might be his last.
And thus: he’s quite insufferable.
Tomas does not have a clear plot hook - he’s more of a “wandered into your story” kind of guy.
Marquise Collette DuMont | Theme
Colette DuMont is from the city-state of Rivast a fictional peninsula between France and Italy. Northern Rivast, where the wealthy live quite lavishly, is deeply influenced by France, and thus most northerners speak French as their first language. It’s also one of the most openly magical cities in the world - meaning that a lot of potions are exported from here (real or fake), and it’s one of the few places that actively studies the arcane arts. Unlike most of Europe, Rivast is a democratic republic in the Roman style.
Colette is accomplished. Deliciously wealthy, a decent illusionist, enchantress, and renowned musician. She was bred for this, you see. The eldest daughters often are, in Rivast. And of course, the man she married, that pig Marcel, took her family title. Controlling, miserable little man. Can one blame her for making a point to embarrass him with rampant affairs? Well...not just him. Embarrassing the gentry with open flirting, inappropriate touching, and loud, brash innuendos is the only thing that stops her from going absolutely mad with boredom! You understand, surely.
Oh but that filth, Marcel, and his wretched lover could not take a joke. Could not handle her investigating. Did not like her making love to Oracle assassins in the narrow Romanesque back-alleys of the south. Oh, alright - she was plotting against her husband. But if you knew what Marcel was capable of, who he had made a deal with to claim his social status - why then you might spend most of your evenings "conspiring" with an assassin as well.
What? Of course it didn't work! Would she be in this miserable little country if it had? Now, help her, damn it. She has vengeance to pursue. And besides...Gabrielle is such a light sleeper - the servants don't know her favorite story. No one but she knew which sweets to give her when she had a nightmare. And little Andre - what of his viola lessons? She hadn't thought. Hadn't considered...well. She will return home. Marcel will die. And she will set things right in the rotten state of Rivast.
Frederick Bauer | ThemeA former soldier turned mercenary, and a man who has survived by being reliable. And punctual. And prudent. There is but one thing you have in this life after all - and that is your word. He has worked for noble houses, merchant princes, and quietly for factions that preferred deniability to loyalty.
Frederick is stern, honest to a fault, and perpetually armed. He is also easily annoyed and prone to thinking his way is the only way forward.
For a time, he thought himself safe. Safe in the confines of the empire, hands digging into soil, a wife ready to bear their first child. But the world is a cruel place - and within the year, wifeless and childless, he returned to Italy to fight as a mercenary to Nicolo Di'Antoni. The only remaining sign of his attempt at a peaceful life is two rings on a cord around his neck.
The atrocities committed under Nicolo's banner were legal, stamped, signed, and considered an expected part of war. They were also enough to push Frederick out of service. He arrived in England by ship with the intention of finding work there. Perhaps he shouldn't be picky but...no. No magic. No witchcraft. None of that stupid Oracle bullshit either.
The world ought to be simple. Explainable. Workable.
Unfortunately for him - the world is none of those things - and the story we tell with Frederick will likely involve him learning this the hard way.
Jayne Pritchett | ThemeJayne Pritchett is a bookish young woman with a noticeable accent and cadence that scream her origin. What origin you ask? Nobility. Structure. Even titles! She, of course, vehemently denies it. Because she's not a noble woman who cut off all her hair - she's a scholar. No - don't touch that book, please. It's private. Where were we? Ah yes!
Jayne has been called a know-it-all, all her life - which is absolutely stupid because the point of her very existence is that she does not, in fact, know it all. She is trying to know it all. There is a distinction. Definitions matter. (Socrates claimed the only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.)
Anyway - not a lot of work for scholars, it seems. Not outside of universities and nobility - both of which she needs to avoid right now. (What? Oh - no reason.) Luckily, she knows some very simple spellwork that makes her handy to the right thief - something that would likely set her mother's hair ablaze if she were to ever find out.
Which she wouldn't.
Because...erm.
(Tell them she's dead.)
Yes, her mother is dead. Ahem. Tragic.
Well...such is life and all that - hey - while we're on the subject...have you ever considered the vastness of the world we occupy - how absurd it all is - how silly the pointless little rules we make are when observed through that lens? No?
(Me either.) Yeah, Jayne hasn't either.
