Tom sat on a hill overlooking the crowd of people on the street before him. He went over what Master Cernes told him. He needed to focus on one individual and slowly move on from one person to the next. He needed to be careful though, so as to not be overwhelmed. He was nervous but he resolved himself to do it.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes to calm himself. Master told him that he was ready for this, which meant he had to be. He opened his eyes and observed the crowd of people before him.

It was a long and straight street, with several shops on it. There was such a great deal of noise being made down there that he could hear a muffled version of it, sitting on the hill like he was. There were men in coats, in long flowing robes, even some that were bare chested. There were women in silk dresses, in veils and some even were wearing corsets. The town was a great hubbub of a clash of cultures - people from distant and disparate parts of the land wanted to come here.

He needed to focus on one person at a time. He couldn't let the amount of people overwhelm him. He scanned the crowd and focused on the baker who was behind a stall which had a lot of bread loaves. He was wearing a white apron with a white hat on and fanning the loaves, shooing away any flies that tried to land on his bread.

Tom was in the baker's mind. His name was Stegal Ralfe and he had come to the town as a young kid with his dad. His dad had started the bakery and he had taken over it. "Bread loaves for sale. Fresh bread loaves for sale!" Ralfe was shouting at the customers at the moment. "You won't get bread at a better price anywhere else." Ralfe was feeling the heat.

Tom had been instructed not to dwell too long in one mind, so he switched focus, this time to a little boy that was standing in front of the bakery. Ralfe paid the little boy no mind, instead focusing his attention on people who wore rich clothes. The little boy was wearing dusty clothes that were too big for him. His name was Jack Nola. His mother was sick at home and his father had died long ago. He was feeling really hungry as Jack's mother - Agnes, but Jack just called her Momma - was too sick to even get up from her bed and go to work. Jack carefully noticed when Ralfe wasn't looking and snatched a small loaf of bread and slunk away. Ralfe was none the wiser as he kept calling for people to buy his wares.

Jack bumped into a lady as he was running, he looked frightened and ran off before the lady could say anything. Tom decided to focus on her next. "Not even a sorry? People haven't been teaching their kids manners these days." The woman's name was Jen Garter. She was going to go to the jewelry shop to look at some necklaces that may be suitable for her to buy for her sister - Carla. It was going to be Carla's wedding in a month, and she wasn't even a bit ready. She needed to hurry up and not just leave things till the last moment. She hadn't even decided what she would wear for the wedding.

Tom forcibly looked away from the crowd and closed his eyes. He was sweating because of what he had just done. He took a few deep breaths like his Master had told him to in order to relax. That was going to be enough for today, he decided. If he decided to observe more people, he might very well get overwhelmed. He got up and decided to go straight away to the Master's house in order to report the progress that he had made.
