the self
⠀
Despite carrying deep wounds from the past, West generally presents as cheerful and carefree. This isn't an act of insincerity but rather a sacred practice. Because West has seen much and suffered much, he is able to maintain an aura hope and optimism in even the most dire circumstances. He is playful and flirtatious, sometimes even reckless in his pursuit of casual intimacies, but he's avoidant of any serious romantic entanglements.

the power
⠀
West has street savvy from his youth in Khare, but only began his magical training recently. He sincerely believes that he has been chosen as a recipient of divine communications from a tripartite deity. He has begun manifesting limited magical abilities that he connects to recent visions and dreams which he attributes to this god. He has never met anyone else connected to his god, but feels confident that there are other priests of this diety at large in the world.

He has a robe of many fashions, capable of changing color to fit his mood. He also has basic travel gear, a bedroll, a cookpot, and traveling clothes. He carries writing implements, a lantern, and usually has a book or two on hand, carving tools, a satchel of herbs and fungi (medicinal, flavorful, and recreational varieties). He carries a dagger and quarterstaff for self-defense but is not a very proficient fighter. He does not possess armor of any kind.⠀
the story
⠀
Born in Khare, the child of a prostitute and a street hustler, West had a rough start to life. At age nineteen, he got caught picking the pocket of a naive-looking young farmer. Instead of turning him over to the authorities, the man offered him a hot meal instead. Before the end of the night, he proposed marriage. Tempted by the prospect of a warm bed and regular meals, West accepted and left behind everything he knew to become a simple farmer's wife. A year later, he became a mother. West did his best to find contentment in peaceful domesticity, but he always felt out of place and deeply unhappy. Then tragedy struck. Their small farm was raided by violent barbarians. West saved himself by abandoning his family and hiding in the wilderness. When he came out of hiding, he found his husband and child both gruesomely killed. Guilt and shame consumed West and he wandered the hinterlands from one outpost to the next drinking, whoring, and longing for death. But instead of meeting with death, he met the devil instead. West was "saved" by a mysterious benefactor who allowed him to stay in a numbed stupor for the better part of a year. At some point during this time West confessed his sense of disconnection from his female body, and his secret desire to be a man. His benefactor helped him to transition via magical means. After his transition, West slowly began to come to terms with the death of his family and understand his survivor's guilt. He weaned himself from the intoxicants that kept him numbed and compliant and began to recognize the toxic relationship pattern he'd fallen into. He allowed others to care for his physical needs, pretended to love them in order to reap the practical benefits, but secretly resented them for failing to see his act of deception for what it was. He understood that his benefactor was in love with him, and despite his gratitude for the many gifts his benefactor had given, he could no longer continue playing the role of devoted lover. He left, unsure of where he was going, without any plan for how he would care for himself. While passing through an ancient forest on his way back to civilization, a fierce storm blew in. West found refuge in an abandoned temple. While there, West prayed for purpose and direction. That night, he dreamed that he was devoured by the serpent of chaos, the divine creator Gan. He experienced a rapid fractal disintegration of his ego, witnessing the way that desire and suffering give way to one another again and again in an eternal cosmic dance. The dark goddess Ani cut him to pieces and reassembled him again and again, teaching him that death has no permanence. He saw that is son and husband had re-entered the fold of eternity without resentments and were at peace. Then Shen, the wise fool, assigned him this task: to live lightly, in kindness and with reverence for nature, to become a living reminder of god's laughter, especially in places where god is seen as wrathful and stern. West returned to the city of his birth, content with his purpose, willing to help where he can.
INVENTORY //
West carries a swatch of fabric from his son's tunic wrapped around a lock of the child's hair. He carries his husband's tobacco pouch. His robe of many fashions was a gift from his benefactor.
Bloodveil Character Sheet
Character Name:
Opal
Alias/Nickname:
Opal is the only name he knows for himself. His true name has been kept from him.
Race:
Human
Bloodline (if noble):
NA or TBD
Age:
20. Opal arrived in Bloodveil mere days before his first appearance in society.
Appearance:
He has a delicate look, pale yellow hair, and a fair complexion. He could almost pass for nobility except that his clothing fit him too loosely, his baring is too anxious, and his eyes belie his humble origins.
District of Residence:
His home is in a village beyond the Veilwood. He has no residence within the city.
Occupation:
He's an herbalist, a healer, and a medium. He studied herbal magic under his mother, a known witch. Though he knows much, he has never practiced his arts outside of his mother's guidance.
Affiliations:
He has come to Bloodveil in search of his brother Jasper who he believes is being held captive there. Opal has brought a magical heirloom, a ruby pendant, and indends to pay it as ransom in exchange for his brother's life. The heirloom however seems to have a mind of its own, and may have its own agenda.
Abilities & Strengths:
He understands plants and carries a good deal of herbal lore and medicinal knowledge. He does not possess supernatural healing powers but can intuit affective treatment for many ailments both natural and supernatural. Non-magical animals are drawn to him and he is able to sooth and work well with many creatures. He is a medium and percieves ghosts and spirits, sometimes mistaking them for living people. Because of these exposures, he does not spook easily when witnessing supernatural events.
Weaknesses & Curses:
Opal is fearful and naive. He lacks confidence at the most fundamental level. He has never practiced autonomy or existed beyond his Mother's reach. His gifts and abilities could make him a valuable asset to many, and he is too naive to recognize the difference between friends and foes.
Personality:
He is a true innocent and is genuinely good in both actions and intentions. This often inspires care and concern from those who remain capable of such tender feelings.
History & Secrets:
There is more to Opal's past than what he understands. He was not his mother's natural child, but was stolen and raised to be the witch's tool and servant. He was fed potions and poisons as a child to keep him dependent, and was shaped into an oracular tool more potent than any pendulum or crystal ball. He has no capacity to unlock this power for himself, as these power's were cultivated in a state of deep hypnosis. Most of his own mind is hidden from him. His blood has been used to fuel and focus the witches magic most of his life and traces of her spellwork may linger in his aura.
What He Seeks:
Opal loves his brother and wants to help him. He does not see himself as capable of heroics and intends to save his brother then retreat back to safety. He has no dreams or ambitions beyond the seemingly impossible quest before him.
My life is of little value. I'd rather lose it trying to save something that matters, than die of old age under the shadow of my own fear.

Gaeloth
Alias/Nickname:
Unknown
Race:
Disembodied Entity of Uncertain Origin
Bloodline (if noble):
Unknown
Age:
Unknown. By his best estimate Gaeloth has been enslaved for the past fifty years or so.
Appearance:
To those who are able to see him he would appear like smoke or shadow. His density can be compressed to the size of a house cat or diffused to an area as a thin fog with up to a 10 ft diameter. He can change his shape at will but often takes the shape of a 4 ft tall winged imp with horns. To most people including Opal he is completely invisible. He can shape himself into a human like form but this shape is harder for him to hold than others.
District of Residence:
His home is a ruby pendant currently in the possession of a young man called Opal who comes from a village beyond the Veilwood. Over the past 50 years Gealoth has traveled regularly to Bloodveil to complete clandestine tasks on behalf of his recently deceased mistress.
Occupation:
Magically bound servant
Affiliations:
He belongs to Opal. He suspects that in his former life he had a number of important affiliations but he does not remember them. He suspects he may have been an important member of nobility.
Abilities & Strengths:
He is able to manipulate physical objects using minor telekinesis with limits based on the density of his form. The more compact he is the greater his push/pull/lift capacity. Typically, he's not much stronger than an average human.
He has extraordinary sense perception, the ability to see in extreme low light and has sensitive hearing on level with a feline. He's also perceptive of subtle temperature and pressure changes in his environment.
He is able to communicates telepathically but only at the level of surface thoughts. Projecting words and recieving messages meant for him.
He is adept at reading the emotions and intentions of others but this is more on level with a master poker player and is not a supernatural power. He can be deceived by a master manipulator, but is likely to see through most petty deceit.
He is able to possess simple minded creatures like common animals, and can take possession of a human body if consent is given.
He is able to form teeth and claws and can cause piercing or slashing damage with these if he attacks.

Weaknesses & Curses:
Gaeloth is twice bound, primarily to the ruby pendant that is his prison and secondarily by verbal contract with his master. His bondage to the pendant allows for limited negotiation of his verbal contract but denys him the ability to refuse a contract altogether. In the absence of a functional contract Gealoth becomes subject to a compulsion to please his master that borders on obsessive.
If he violates the terms of his contract he is instantly punished with pain and confusion.
Gealoth finds it more difficult to complete any task when acting under his own volition rather than fulfilling a command from his master.
Telepathic communication with anyone other than his master requires expressed permission, though his surface thoughts can be read easily by anyone with a telepathic ability.
Gaeloth is not able to access memories from before his imprisonment unless it provides a direct benefit to his master.

Personality:
Gaeloth's personality may be mutible to match the whims of his master. During his years of service to the witch he was purposeful, malicious, vengeful and cunning. Since his bond transferred to Opal he's been showing signs of increased emotionality and even affection. Presumably he had a personality before his imprisonment, but it's unclear who or what he might have been.
History & Secrets:
Gaeloth was able to betray his mistress and ensure her ultimate demise by manipulating her eldest son into revealing key secrets to a powerful mage somewhere within Bloodveil. It was this mage that sent the wasting curse that killed the witch and is likely still holding Jasper captive. I'm open to designing an NPC for this function, but if a PC or legacy character makes sense in this role I'm open to collaboration.
Gaeloth's past is a secret even to himself, and as such is open to collaboration and suggestions.

Additional Info:
- Although Sabian has been offered a place within several packs, he has declined all invitations, electing to live under "lone" status, which limits the authority that pack leaders have over him, but also consigns him to the periphery of the wolfen social hierarchy.
- He is slowly approaching folk hero status because of the reputation he has for picking fights with vampires and winning.
- Sabian is speculated to have been born in captivity. No one has been able to identify his pack of origin, and his parents' identities remain a mystery.
- His blood name, typically chosen by the family and pack leader when a wolf comes of age, was selected by Sabian himself.
- Sabian's pack name was also self-selected. He chose the name of a girl that he liked, hoping to entice her to mate with him and become the progenitor of a new pack, but she rejected him. He altered the pronunciation of his name slightly (from Louise with the hard z ending to Louise with the soft s ending). Since then, he consistently denies any connection between his name and the girl he once liked. He's also shifted his preference to male erotic partners and has made no further mention of mating or raising cubs of his own.

Additional Info:
- There are rumors that he dabbles in necromancy and blood magic, but he insists that his interests are entirely scientific and scoffs at the idea that there is anything magical about his special interests.
- His Sire is Lady Margot Barrett, a celebrated poet and actress of middling importance in vampire society. Still, she has managed to live for two and a half centuries without making any known enemies. She only ever sired one vampire before Horatio, and is rumored to have destroyed that offspring for having dishonored her reputation.
- Few have anything negative to say about Horatio or his Sire as both are considered exemplars of charm and good taste. If there is any strain in their relationship, it is entirely hidden from view. Lady Margot seems ever indulgent of her offspring's varied interests, and Horatio is consistently deferential and affectionate toward her.
