Race: Aswang is an umbrella term for various shape-shifting evil spirits in Filipino folklore, such as vampires, ghouls, witches, viscera suckers, and werewolves. The Aswang is the subject of a wide variety of myths, stories, arts, and films, as it is well known throughout the Philippines. Witch aswang (sometimes called mambabarang) are characterized by extreme vindictiveness, laying curses upon those who have crossed her by making certain objects, such as rice, bones, or insects, come out of the bodily orifices of the cursed. Witches have eyes that reflect images upside down, as well as elongated irises. Witches can become aswang, only if they have certain qualities that follow an aswang already. Then they can become an aswang, and by doing so their powers become stronger, stronger than the other witches as well.

Prelude
Magdalena had been hearing the voice for days, calling her name. Sometimes soft, sometimes loud. Sometimes in her ear or far away, on the other side of the world. She heard it first as she was drowsing on the lanai of their home, the breeze blowing through its hundred windows. It grew louder still, when she put her feet on the cool tile floor.

Magdalena followed the voice out to the garden, where the balete tree stood, its roots reaching up to the sky and into the ground. Something touched her there, something like wind blowing through her gullet, something darkly sweet like molasses in her throat.

It came to her again at night, blown in from the treetops, the air redolent of cemetery flowers. Dead leaves. Tobacco. It taught her things, guided her hand through the most arcane with invisible fingers. She went to the mirror every night, peering past the candlelight into the limpid shadows, pressed her ear against the glass and listened.

The maids saw the strange black bird fly from her window every now and then, and the black cat that sometimes darted through the underbrush. And they whispered amongst themselves that they could hear a voice, a deep male voice, whispering to the youngest de Leon daughter in her bedroom. But when they looked, they would find no one there. No one but the senorita coming her hair.

Name: Hagibis

Home Country: The Philippines

Date of Birth: ?

Hair: Long, straight black hair.

Eyes: Dark brown.

Build: Slender

Race: The Tikbalang (lit. "demon horse") is a mythical creature of the Philippines, generally described as a tall, bony humanoid creature with disproportionately long limbs, to the point that its knees reach above its head when it squats down. It has the head and feet of an animal, most commonly a horse.

Sexual orientation: Yes.

Archetype: The Trickster/The Clown

Weapon of Choice: Baston, Bankaw, Balisong

Likes: Winning, women, the ocean, open spaces.

Dislikes: Losing, women, enclosed places.

Goals: Hagibis's goal is to avoid inheriting the tikbalang throne.

Magic: Tikbalangs are said to be able to run as fast as the wind, become invisible, and can transform itself into a human. They can cause confusion, manipulate forest paths, and have spikes protruding out of their mane. Tikbalang are said to be benevolent guardians of treasure and elemental kingdoms, but they can be mischievous or, at worst, malicious and evil. Tikbalang can also give people who can tame them anting-anting (amulets) made from one of their spines, and will serve those who can tame them until they die.

Hobbies: Tikbalang are easy to entertain, and Hagibis is no different. He likes to race, dance, and almost every night ventures out to the city to drink and dance with humans.

Personality traits: * Playful * Adventurous * Good sense of humor * Loyal * Witty * Resourceful * Flirtatious * Bold * Kind * Generally benevolent and forgiving

Personality flaws: * Irresponsible * Mischievous * Self-centered * Vainglorious * Childish *Devious * Cocky *

Motivation: Hagibis is a hedonist, and his main motivation is to avoid pain, discomfort, and responsibility.

Out of the Ordinary: Hagibis is the son of Datu Maliksi, a famed tikbalang warrior and protector of Biringan, a city in the Philippines, not unlike Atlantis. Hagibis is the fastest of Maliksi's sons, and he's been named for his speed. When he runs, Hagibis carries with him a strong wind and the sound of rolling thunder.

Advantage: Hagibis is the fastest of the tikbalang. He is stronger than humans, and can use magic to confuse them and other entities.

Disadvantage: Hagibis, while the eldest of his brothers, is the smallest and the weakest.

Scared Most By: Failing his people and the people he cares about.

Greatest Regret: Failing to protect a loved one from harm.

Skills: * Tikbalang magic * Arnis

History:

Hagibis is the eldest of seven brothers, sons of Datu Maliksi, protector of Biringan. As heir to the throne of Datu Maliksi, Hagibis is saddled with many responsibilities, all of which he performs, albeit reluctantly.

After a while, Hagibis becomes resentful of his father, his responsibilities, and the burden of the throne. He begins to rebel, shirking his responsibilities to eat, drink, and be merry. It is 1930 when he flees Biringan and travels to Manila, where he meets a woman named Felipa Culala and becomes her lover for a short time.

After some more time gallivanting around, Hagibis is confronted by war when Japanese forces invade the Philippines. Felipe Culala, later known as "Kumander Dayang-Dayang" convinces Hagibis in 1945 to join the Huks, a nascent group of guerilla soldiers campaigning against Japanese invaders.

In his time in the Hukbalahap, Hagibis becomes the most trusted soldier of Kumander Dayang-Dayang, and is often seen riding out beside her in battle. Hagibis is known for his fearlessness in battle and his supernatural speed.

Later, a witch-aswang named Magdalena joined the Huks. Despite a tikbalang's natural inclination to revile aswang, they fell in love.

Kumander Dayang-Dayang is elected into the Huk's military committee, but Commander Luis Taruc quickly becomes threatened and jealous of the woman's skill, and her men's loyalty to her. There soon come threats of thievery and abuse against Dayang-Dayang, and she is soon executed by the Huks.

Taruc had sent away Hagibis on a scouting mission, and so he is unable to protect his commander. Magdalena runs from the camp and brings word to Hagibis. They abscond to Siquijor. They live at the edge of a small community and protect it from Japanese soldiers, and the place is safe for a while. Some of the townspeople are grateful to them, but many fear and hate them.

Hagibis returns home one day to find that Magdalena has not returned from the river with her washing. He goes to find her, and finds er beaten body half-drowned on the riverbed. He nurses her back to health, letting her take revenge on the man who violated her.

That evening, as Hagibis stands guard at their home, smoking tobacco underneath the acacia, he hears the cicadas go quiet. Even the mosquitoes have stopped buzzing, and a strong wind comes shaking the treetops.

Kulog and Kidlat, his brothers, come to bring him back home to his responsibilities. They fight, and the twins overpower their brother and take him home to his responsibilities.

At home, Datu Maliksi strips Hagibis of his title of prince and heir, until he can redeem himself in "my eyes and the eyes of the kingdom."

At present, Hagibis is always accompanied by Alas and Dos, tikbalang guards assigned to keep him from running away again, and track him down when he does. Of course, he manages to evade them every now and then, and regularly gets himself into trouble.

Phoebe, who her grandparents called "Poppet," was raised on this small homestead, learning to milk cows and kill chickens as her grandmother told her stories about the good people. Stay away from the Unseelie Court. Don't step in fairy circles. Leave out milk or a bit of good butter, or a knob of bread and cheese for the pixies who help with the chores. She would have dismissed it as fairy tales and nonsense, if she hadn't thought she'd seen, out of the corner of her eye, a gossamer wing or a small red frock coat...

When she was seventeen, Grandfather Murphy passed on himself, leaving Poppet and Fiona alone in the world. Fiona was getting on in years and needed help with the housework, so even after Poppet finished school and was meant to go to university, she stayed on at the house.

Nineteen now, Poppet still cares for her grandmother, only leaving the house to run errands at the village, or to walk in the forest or by the sea. But strange things have begun happening at home: At night, Poppet swears, she hears the scrabbling of fingernails, or little lights darting from the shadows.
