ASTRONOMY
The story takes place in year 2231. The human race has pushed out into several different solar systems in the tradition of colonialism. Earth is still habitable. A single Empire claims authority over all known human actions. Yet, their grip grows more tenuous the further from Earth they reach.
Humans have yet to encounter extraterrestrial, sentient life. However, several moons, and some planets, have been discovered with naturally occurring oxygen or have been made habitable.
A small port, named after some admiral who died in some war, orbits some uninhabitable rock. It's one of the last remaining hubs between civilization and the unknown. It's a place where those carrying the torch of humanity even further into a newly colonized system come for the supplies they can't harvest themselves. Wide-eyed wonder can be seen in the eyes of the back-planet children born to that life.
It's also a place for those on the run from the long arm of the law to find work.
Port Thad is little more than a network of warehouses and a series of docks that range from questionably dated to disrepair. One superstructure comprises its core. The completely enclosed center of accommodations is taller than it is wide. A bar, brothel, three hotels and a bazaar all dwarf the understaffed customs office.
The first floor plays host to several terminals. Some of these screens display more than just a dock number and a ship's name. Those who are taking passengers for transport will list capacity, fees and departures. Those seeking to hire more hands for their crew will list open positions.
There is seldom any mention of compensation or duration of employment. Those conversations are left to be had in person.
The Cissonius is a Risso class frigate that is classified as a 'Private Vessel' or PV, as it is free from a Corporate or Government title. It is operated independently by its captaining owners. The Risso class frigate is widely labeled as being one of the less popular ships due to its true 'Jack of All Trades' design, making it functional and capable in many areas, though not amazing in any of them.
Used briefly by the Empirical Naval forces, it was quickly phased out for being 'obsolete,' and replaced with more specifically designed models. However, as a private vessel it's considered somewhat of a rarity as they were never manufactured en masse for public purchase, though surplus, or 'Decom,' deals have been known to have happened.
The Cissonius in particular is a highly retrofitted ship that has been built to make long hauls at the rim of known space with as much comfort as can be managed, while still maintaining the ability to transport cargo and passengers.

ASTRONOMY
- the displacement of spectral lines toward longer wavelengths (the red end of the spectrum) in radiation from distant galaxies and celestial objects. This is interpreted as a Doppler shift that is proportional to the velocity of recession and thus to distance.

What You'll Need To Apply:
Crew Positions:
-Medic: While modern medicine is highly sophisticated and nearly autonomous, it does require a trained physician or technician in order to be properly administered (See Medicine under Technology.) As well as having a proper first responder on board while going days - sometimes weeks without seeing another station - there is a wide array of sensitive cargo that require the observation and care of a medical technician.
-Cyber Specialist: The Engineering Department on a vessel large enough to act as a cargo ship is broken into two halves: Mechanical and Cyber. The Cyber Specialist crew member will be in charge of maintaining sophisticated Nav, Coms and life support systems.
-Security Specialist: While many civilian owned vessels for hire do not boast a mounted arsenal, they will almost certainly have a weapons locker. Security Specialists are expected to not only maintain firearms, but be able to use them with high proficiency. Physicality and eye for keeping the ship, her crew and her cargo safe is an absolute must for the job. The plan is to always take whatever actions necessary for as smooth a voyage as possible. As a result, that physicality can sometimes find itself being put to use in helping to maintain the ship's interior as well as moving cargo.

The following should be used as an example for your character sheet and bridges the gap between both IC and OOC. When filling this out, please note that this information will also be used as an IC 'screening' process for your character prior to becoming an official crew member aboard the Cissonius.

Technology:
-Transportation: FTL (Faster Than Light) Drives still exist only in the wild imaginations of children and physicists. However, the staple technology for traversing space is incredibly efficient and powerful. It is far more likely that the majority of civilian vessels, both recreational and commercial, would need to stop more often for fresh air and water than to deal with their reactor's core.
-Weapons: Rail-guns, reactor-powered torpedoes and heavy, Closed In Weapons Systems, are typical for military grade ships. Personal firearms have not evolved much in appearance since the 21st century. While the technology is dramatically more sophisticated - the soul operation of the user is to point and shoot.
-Medicine: Most serious diseases, infections, viruses, ruptures, fractures, and all other trauma imaginable can be treated by microscopic, biodegradable nanites injected into the patient. However, the ability to correctly assess an injury and then to program the nanites accordingly is still critical knowledge that usually will require a trained technician. This is also true for the observation and care of a patient while the nanites work.

OOC:
This is a guided, group collaboration game. A list of NPCs that can be puppeted freely, and NPCs that only the GMs will be permitted to control will be posted. The goal is to circumnavigate the stagnation that most group games will inevitably experience. There is a prefabricated plot. How that plot comes to fruition is based on the actions of your characters in response to the provided environments. The goal is to keep the momentum moving forward, and the immersion high.
What we want from our group:
We're looking for 2-3 literate writers to join us. We expect third person, past tense posts with decent grammar. We would prefer to keep the post rate to once a day. Real life does happen, and sometimes we all need a day off.
I personally struggle to complete even the most basic post in under two paragraphs, and we want like minded writers who do the same.
However,
We also feel that 2-6 paragraphs often tends to be the sweet spot for keeping a game moving. This is not an application for a novella contest. Keep it classy and concise: sophisticated, but casual. That doesn't mean you're going to get kicked if you get particularly immersed and write a post that's a little on the longer side. Just keep it in mind.
Please post your intent to submit a character Passport and Resume in this thread. Then, once you've filled both of those out, send it in a personal message (conversation) to both myself (Redtimbre) and The_Haans for review. We will only be taking 2, possibly 3 applications. If we find the Passport and Resume posted here instead of our inbox, we're likely going to pass you up in favor of someone who read the entire RTJ. No hard feelings.
Good luck, shipmates.
