Amani Jawahir

Thread: The Legend of Zafiria

  • Name: Amani (ah-ma-nee) Jawahir (jah-wuh-heer)
    Gender: Female
    Pronouns: She / Her
    Age: Twenty-eight
    Location: Azhara
Affiliations: The Guild of Performers and Artisans
  • e5lNFy4.jpeg
Height: Five feet and six inches tall.
Build: Slim, somewhat toned from physical activity during performances.
Skin Tone: Warm olive, smooth and unblemished.
Hair: Dark brown, almost black, with lots of loose curls cascading down past her shoulders.
Eyes: Almond shaped and a striking amber color, framed by long eyelashes.
Style: She dresses in flowing, dramatic clothing, adorned with golden bangles and trinkets that jingle softly as she moves. She is rarely seen without her deck of cards, which she keeps in a worn leather pouch at her side. More often than not, her skin is stained with delicate and intricate henna designs.
  • Amani is both charming and mysterious, drawing others in with her allure. Having a bit of a dramatic flair, she always plays into her mystique for an audience, often speaking in riddles to keep others guessing. Despite all of her theatrics, Amani is deeply sensitive and intuitive, and although she thrives on being in the spotlight, she's much more reserved in her personal life. Amani's belief in destiny is what drives her the most, and she is convinced that she is destined for something greater. She blindly puts her trust into her cards, and if she feels they're telling her to do something, she often does it without question, which can make her seem quite reckless.
  • Amani was born into a family of artisans in the bustling city of Azhara. Her mother was a dancer, captivating audiences with her moves, while her father was a skilled jeweler, crafting handmade pieces for the even the most elite people in Azhara. From a young age, Amani seemed to posses the ability to read others, being able to sense their desires or fears often before they even spoke. This gift, along with her natural flair for the dramatic, led her to follow in the footsteps of her parents in the Guild of Performers and Artisans. Even as a child, she enjoyed putting on made-up shows for others or joining in on her mother's dance performances. Although she appreciated her father's craft, she couldn't sit still long enough to give it a fighting chance, though he always made her jewelry which she wore with pride.

When she was only twelve years old, Amani came across an old deck of oracle cards in the market that seemed to call her forth with a strange energy. Intrigued by them, she eagerly purchased the cards and took them home to begin experimenting with them. Much to her surprise, the cards seemed to respond to her in a way that went beyond just typical fortune-telling; they seemed to whisper secrets and reveal small visions of the future, they even granted her the ability to cast minor illusions and enchantments. With the cards, she was able to expand further on her intuitions than she ever imagined, unlocking her full potential. From that day forth, Amani was very rarely without her cards – they had become an extension of herself.

As she honed in on her craft, she began doing readings for others, weaving her magic into them to make them into full-blown performances. Amani's skill and accuracy quickly made her a sensation in the Guild, and as word spread of her talent, people began coming to see her fortune-telling in action from far and wide. While all of her coin comes from giving readings to others, Amani herself has a close connection with her cards and does many readings in her own time, both to get insight on the world around her and for self-reflection. Some years ago, during one of her routine readings, Amani's cards showed her a vision of an island rising up from the sea. She recognized this island to be that of the legendary sinking island, Zafiria. Her reading hinted at an ancient power that had been long lost, but soon rediscovered. Captivated by this vision every day since, Amani has a feeling that her destiny is somehow tied to the island. When she heard of the Sultan's call, she knew it had to be about that reading. Knowing this could be her only chance to understand what the cards were telling her that day, Amani is determined to embark on the adventure to get the answers she desires.
  • Amani is a skilled cartomancer, using a deck of oracle cards to read fortunes and see glimpses of the future. Along with this, she has minor illusion and enchantment abilities, which are seen as harmless but can be extremely effective in captivating her audience and can be distracting to even a trained eye. Her enchantments typically consists of her making her cards float, shimmer, and even manifest fleeting but mesmerizing spectral images of what the cards see. Additionally, she has the ability to enchant people to make herself seem more alluring, allowing her to easily draw in an audience or talk her way out of trouble.

Pippi Pilwicken

Verse: Dungeons & Dragons (Wednesday Nights with Mikki)
Threads: Around the Campfire, Simpler Times, Gnome on the Roam (challenge entry), Brew Galaxy (challenge entry)

  • Nicknames: Pip, Pipsqueak, Picky (these names were given to her by her family and others in her gnome community as a child)
    Race: Forest Gnome
    Gender: Female
    Pronouns: She / Her
    Age: Forty-seven
    Class: Ranger
    Subclass: Beast Master
    Background: Outlander
    Level: 6
  • Ly0fspQ.png
Due to her race, Pippi is short in stature, standing at only 3'5". She is lean from her many years surviving in the forest on her own, always travelling on foot. She has choppy, medium-length blonde hair that appears as though she frequently cuts it off with a blade when it gets too long. It is stringy, disheveled, and matted in several areas. She wears simple armor made of leather which she crafted herself from dried animal hides, a green lightweight hooded cloak, and she is always barefoot. Her hazel eyes show years of buried down pain, though if you look deep enough you will find a glint of her natural gnome curiosity for the world.
  • Pippi is friendly to everyone unless given a reason not to be, but she often has a hard time fully opening herself up to others. She can be rather shy and soft-spoken, and at times even a bit naive. However, she has a certain wit to her and natural understanding of nature and survival that gives her a slight edge. She is caring and compassionate, though especially so toward animals. Pippi has been emotionally hardened by a tragic past, but is learning to find new things in life to enjoy and is growing as a person more each day.
  • Within the forests of the Dalelands was the quaint gnomish village of Thornbrook. They were a community of over 70 strong, consisting of several generations of different families. Some lived in underground burrows, and others in tree cottages built into hollowed trees. This was the case for a gnome named Pippi Pilwicken, a farmer's daughter. She was an only child, living with her parents and grandfather, the village's master ranger, with whom she shared a special bond.

From a young age, her grandfather began teaching her the ways of the forest, noticing her affinity for it. She grew up learning foraging, fishing, tracking, and once she was old enough, bowmanship, hunting, and communication with animals. Just after her 25th birthday, it was time for her to find her first familiar.

Pippi's first attempt at finding a familiar went smoothly, and she returned home that day with a new fox pup by her side, who she named Kit. With her new familiar, she finally felt like a seasoned ranger, though Kit still needed a lot of training. When going on long trips, she would leave him in the care of her grandfather.

Weeks later, on one fateful day, she left alone at dawn to go hunting for the village. Upon returning home, she found the entire village up in flames. Some were running around screaming while others laid lifeless. She found her family among the wreckage, none had survived, including her familiar. Pippi grabbed what she could before fleeing into the forest.

For a decade, Pippi wandered the Dales, but never returned to her village. She kept herself isolated while hoping to find others from the village without outwardly looking for them. Eventually, she wandered out of the Dalelands and into other forests, her search becoming more determined than before, with no luck. It was in one of these forests where she ran into trouble, meeting those she now calls friends. Pippi continues her quiet search as she travels with the others, helping them while seeking her own answers.

Amelia Vasquez

Thread: Overgrowth (on hiatus!)

  • Nickname: Amy
    Gender: Female
    Pronouns: She / Her
    Age: Forty-three
    Occupation: Botanist
    Family: Sienna Vasquez (daughter, deceased)
  • Height: Five feet and five inches tall.
    Build: Slim and somewhat athletic.
Skin Tone: Naturally warm brown, with some signs of wrinkles from both age and stress.
Hair: Dark brown with a few strands of grey throughout. Medium-length and wavy, normally keeping it pulled back out of her face.
Eyes: Brown, carrying years of emotional pain.
  • Amy is strong and determined, shaped by the many hardships she's had in life. She is incredibly resilient, having endured the loss of her child as well as the decline of the world, her life's work slipping away in an instant. Despite this, she remains determined and focused on tying to help humanity, showing her compassion for both others and nature itself. She is intelligent and resourceful, using her knowledge in botany to try and find solutions to the Overgrowth. Both stoic and level-headed, Amy doesn't often allow her emotions to cloud her judgement, even in difficult situations. She is also deeply independent, further driven by her now years of nearly complete solitude. However, this also causes her to be fairly cautious of forming new connections with others.
  • Amelia Vasquez, more commonly known as Amy, was born and raised in rural New York on her family's farm. From a young age she learned the meaning of hard work, and was always being made to do labor around the farm. This cultivated in her both a strong will and a deep love for the natural world within Amy. However, during her teen years, she fell in with a bad crowd.

During this time, she seized helping with most work around the farm, opting to hang out with friends and boyfriends, partying and staying out late, sometimes all night. Her parents' concern grew more and more, seeing their only child changing before their eyes. Amy's once helpful and docile nature was turning into an uncooperative and unruly one. Their concern hit a peak when a distraught Amy announced she was pregnant at only seventeen. Her boyfriend was a few years older, though still immature, and had left her upon hearing the news. Her parents forbade her from seeing him or his friends anymore, which Amy agreed, both scared and confused, needing the support of her family.

Slowly, Amy returned back to her normal self, and soon she welcomed a baby girl of her own into the world. Her daughter, Sienna, became her whole world. With the help of her parents, Amy was able to complete school and enroll in college where she would study her passion, botany. It was hard going through college with a toddler on her hip, much different from her classmates, but with hard work and determination she eventually secured a degree. Though she wasn't exactly following in her family's footsteps, Amy never forgot her roots, and much of her research time went into finding ways to safely evade pests and diseases in farming crops.

When the Overgrowth began to take over, Amy felt like her work had been all in vain, watching the very plants she had worked so hard to keep safe turn deadly before her very eyes. What was worse than losing her work was losing her daughter, the light of her life. Like many others, Sienna succumbed to disease brought on by the Overgrowth, a fate which Amy has wished to have had every day since. Early on in the Overgrowth, after Sienna's death, Amy retreated away to a remote greenhouse where she has remained since, working toward trying to eradicate the deadliness of the plants and bring them back to a neutral state. Upon hearing Dr. Veldt's call for help over the radio, Amy answered, eager to put an end to the Overgrowth, whatever it takes.

personality.

Emmeline is fairly standoffish to outsiders when first meeting them. She was raised to be skeptical and weary about the world, and while she does remain fairly cautious, Emmeline still has an undeniable curiosity about the rest of the world. Despite this, she has no real-world knowledge and is extremely naive to society. She lacks many proper manners, especially around a table, and experiences everything as if it's her first time (because it likely is). Having grown up isolated, Emmeline learned to care for herself and, because of this, is extremely self-reliant. However, she often relies too heavily on her magic to get her out of any situation, and lacking worldly knowledge and skills, she doesn't quite understand that her magic can't fix everything.

history.

For as long as she can remember, Emmeline has lived in isolation, hidden away in a small cottage deep within the forest. As a child, her mother was her only companion—a distant yet ever-present figure who warned her of the dangers beyond their home. Though Emmeline never fully understood her mother's reasoning, she believed the warnings, accepting that the outside world was not meant for her.

As she grew older, her mother's presence became more fleeting. At first, she would disappear for a day or two, then weeks, then months. By the time Emmeline was sixteen, she stopped returning altogether. Left alone with only her magic and the company of her raven familiar, Emmeline convinced herself that she was safest in her solitude. She survived, but questions lingered: Had her mother abandoned her? Or had something terrible happened to her? And if so, was Emmeline next?

Unbeknownst to her, Emmeline was hidden for reasons she never had the chance to learn. Her mother had conceived her out of wedlock—an act that would have led to exile in her coven. To protect herself, she fled into the wilderness under the guise of a witches' rite known as The Discovery, where young witches meditated and chose their coven. What was meant to be a temporary escape became permanent as she built a secret life for Emmeline, visiting her in secrecy until, one day, she never returned.

For years, Emmeline has remained in her secluded world, never stepping beyond the safety of her clearing. Few travelers ever stumble upon her home, and those who do rarely stay long—chased away by the sharp beak and fierce cries of her raven. But when Frankie arrives, everything changes. Unlike the others, Frankie doesn't flee. She stays. And for the first time, Emmeline is forced to question everything she once believed—about her mother, the outside world, and, most of all, herself.

abilities.

Emmeline has innate magical abilities and has always been able to spellcast. Her powers as a child were unpredictable and uncontrollable, but as she grew, she learned to hone her abilities. Her powers are related to the coven path that she has chosen, the Wilds coven, granting her nature and elemental based abilities. She is also skilled at potion making, and is able to brew potions with the proper ingredients. These potions mimic the effects of a spell she knows, which can then be drank by others.

it's no use going back to yesterday, because i was a
different
person then.⠀
