Smaugust!
Show us your Dragons and their Hoards.

Dragons have always been a favorite of mine, and when I saw a drawing prompt for August that was also a pun for Smaug, I knew that's what I wanted to do. Also Grem hates the pun, so it makes it even better.

If you aren't in the fantastical mood to draw or write about dragons, that's okay, I'm going to be a bit flexible here. As we know, dragons are collectors. Here are some examples from an artist that draws dragons that hoard many things, some tea pots, others cats, dice, plants, etc. That being said, feel free to flex your creativity here and write about, or draw something, that you covet or collect.

If your entry is not literally something to do with a dragon, please title your post
"A Hoard of _____ "
at the top so that I know you've understood the prompt. Feel free to talk about why you chose what you did (though that's not a requirement).

  • Drawing Art- We will only be accepting personal sketches and drawings. You can do this traditionally or digitally. (SFW Please) They do not need to be colored, but you can. We'd love to see some art that was made with effort and care. Remember, dragon's and their hoard can be interpreted in many directions, there isn't just one right answer here. Submissions that don't follow the guidelines set here won't be rewarded.
  • Other Art: If you have things such as sculptures or painted minis that you have worked on personally, a photo of your work is completely acceptable and within the rules!

  • Write a Poem or short blurb- We're keeping these entries at a max-word count of 250 (Please avoid big triggers). This is meant to be fast and fun.

This is a place to express yourself and is very low pressure. Remember we do not allow the use of AI for our personal writing on site.

Post your writing and/or images below when you're finished to earn your badge.
If you need any help swapping in and out badges, you can check my guide here: Badge Help

I love all the participation we've been seeing these past few months and I thank you all for having fun with me in these silly little adventures!

Always,

Jumbled

So I got a lil excited for this. I drew the 1977 version of Smaug. I'm especially proud of his head.

I used to draw dragons a lot when I was younger. I even had a How to Draw Dragons (and other mythical creatures) book.

My aunt showed me the 1977 The Hobbit movie on VHS when I was little. It was my first experience with anything Lord of the Rings and I still have great nostalgia for it, especially for Smaug. I just love his voice.

I think I did pretty well with drawing Smaug. Would you believe I did it last night? Lol probably. I used colored pencils to try and give him the texture he has in the animated film. I suck at drawing dragon wings but I managed to somewhat match the anatomy at least lol. Also the wings spared me from having to draw the back legs XD. Probably should have made the ears bigger. I'm also proud of the colored pencil blending I managed to do and the fur came out better than I thought it would.

They aren't drawings but these are things I've done.

I made this out of clay in high school.
The smudge you see on the bottom right of the sculpture is me smudging out my name. It had my name on it because it was an art project for art class.

Then I did this recently with 3D printing because I've been dabbling in that.

"Bug and the Dragon's Hoard"
A Fairy Tale (kinda)

Once upon a snack-filled Saturday, in a cluttered corner of the Inner Sanctumβ€”where magical misfits and creative chaos reignedβ€”there lived a very small, very loud, and very ridiculous dragon.

Well… technically, it was Bug in a dragon costume.

He had duct-taped two pool noodles to a green hoodie, added googly eyes to a bike helmet, and painted his roach wings red with glitter glue. "Bugon the Magnificent!" he roared, breathing imaginary fire (and a very real cheese puff) across the carpet battlefield. His tail, which was actually an old sock stuffed with jelly beans, wagged behind him like a proud banner of nonsense.

"This is my hooooooard!" he declared, arms stretched wide.

And oh, what a hoard it was.

Action figures of every shape and fandom stood in ranks across the floorβ€”knights with bendy legs, space rangers missing their helmets, even a mysterious warrior duck that smelled faintly of peanut butter. Between them danced Barbie dolls in glitter gowns and superhero suits, all allies or enemies depending on the drama of the moment. At the center of it all sat a mountain of snacks: marshmallows, gummy worms, three-and-a-half donuts, and a suspiciously melted chocolate bar Bug insisted was "pure enchanted dragon gold."

Each figure had a role to play. There was Sir Chompington the Plastic T-Rex, keeper of the Sour Candy Forest. Queen Laser-Barbie, ruler of the Sparkle Kingdom (and occasional DJ). Commander Snack-Bot 3000, sworn protector of the Cheez-it Citadel. And of course, Prince Bugon, heroic, dramatic, and 87% chaos.

But the greatest treasure of all? His friends.

From behind couch fortresses and cardboard castles peeked the Inner Sanctum crew: misfits and weirdos and creative souls. A wizard with a glowing tablet of knowledge. A cat with sunglasses and a knack for sarcasm. A gentle giant who always brought juice boxes. They watched and laughed as Bug spun his tale, narrating the latest epic…

"Suddenly! A wild Shoe Monster rises from the laundry lands!"

(Bug's left boot flopped dramatically.)

"But fear not! Princess Gumball and her loyal sock ninja army shall defend the Nibble Nook!"

(Plastic limbs flew. Gummy worms were wielded like nunchucks.)

"And lo! The Dragon Bugon descends from the Lamp of Destiny (aka the end table) to deliver justiceβ€”and maybe a cookie."

The battle raged for what felt like hoursβ€”or ten minutes, depending on who was watching. When at last the final pretzel stick fell and peace was restored to the land, Bug slumped atop a bean bag throne.

"Being a dragon is exhausting," he yawned, cookie crumbs in his antennae.

One of the Sanctum friends handed him a juice pouch. "You're a good dragon, Bug."

Bug beamed. "Yeah. 'Cause dragons don't hoard gold. We hoard love, laughter… and cheese balls."

And so, in the warm glow of the Inner Sanctum, surrounded by his mismatched kingdom of toys, friends, and snacks, Bug the Dragon drifted into dreams, his heart as full as his candy drawer.

The end.
(But also the beginning of tomorrow's snack crusade.)

Red gather treasure
Green thieves magic items
Bronze claim boat wrecks
Gold show off trophies of hard work
I do too but not of metal
I gather horns I pull claws
I eat good meals
and keep their skulls
I take blood and cover my walls
I hunt for game
Kill for fun
The wall of my frozen cave
is covered with my efforts
This is the hoard I have worked for
Red collect treasure
Green steal magic items
Bronze claim ship wrecks
Gold display earned trophies
I do too but not of metal
I gather horns I pull claws
I eat good meals
and keep their skulls
I collect blood and paint my walls
I hunt for sport
Kill for fun
The wall of my frozen cave
is decorated with the results
This is my hard earned hoard

For those who aren't used to my weirdness. :awkward: This is the D&D Draconic language, and the process I go through while studying it. I write a poem, find words which actually have a translation and then write it in the hand written form!
