First off, Otys is wise and you should therefore check out his advice first. :P
Of course, as this is a roleplaying forum, you should check out the request section to see if anything tickles your fancy there. If not, you can post your own request thread stating whatever you're interested in, whether it's a plot or just pairings.
If this is your first time using a roleplaying forum, you should know that patience is a great virtue to have around here. Or just an arsenal of distractions to reduce the pain of waiting. Because you may find yourself doing quite a bit of it.

You probably have it figured out by now, but read the request threads.
The request threads tell you what kind of stories people are looking for, and how they like to write. Then, go into the Great Hall section and check out some stories that are in progress to get an idea of how people write together.
Then, make your own request thread about what you want to write about, and how you write, like third person past tense like a book, or present tense more like an rp in an MMO, things like that so any writing partners who respond to your request thread will be compatible with your writing style. You can also respond to people's request threads through private messages (click on their name then click on 'start conversation'). It's a matter of being considerate of others to read people's request threads carefully and not ask them to write stories that go against their interests. And, as always, be cool to people. If someone says something rude (rare, but it happens now and then), ignore it and contact the staff if you think it's a real problem. The staff here is very friendly and they're always ready to help, even if it's just questions.
