When I was much younger,
The concept seemed harmless,
And perhaps it was.
A buoyant piece of material held me
Like a mother's hug,
While that shallow shimmering box
Diminished the scale of the abyss.

The image of failure to hone what I had learned
Crept into my dreams years later
When the day had long been asleep.

The mirage was untouched and untainted,
Uncomfortably clear, splicing with reality.
The descent began without warning,
Invisible hands clutching my shaking ankles,
Cold needles digging into my flesh,
Blunt tendrils bleeding the courage
Out of a worn husk.

The tang of the salt is all too clear,
Far too intense to enjoy on the tongue.
I try to force my eyelids open,
But the salt stings at my vision,
Forcing them to shut again.

But a brief glimpse is all I need.

The abyss surrounds me, submerges me,
Gnaws at every part of my body.
It drills into my ears,
Deafening me with its sloshing and droning.
It clots my nose and mouth,
Shoving the pressure of air down my chest.
There is no fog here,
Yet it is far too murky
To envision what is beyond the immediate.

It is far from a haven for me.
It is a place of unending uncertainty.
Blind hands grope for feelings,
But the fingertips are never met with an answer.
Blind eyes strain beyond shut flesh,
But even that proves futile,
Because it is a place where the sunlight dies.
Chilled flesh pleads for warmth,
But the thick, cool darkness
Silences the call.

As I descend, the pressure mounts
Threatening to crush my bones.
The pain in my lungs erupts,
But no scream can escape my throat.
Instead, the abyss invites itself in,
The ironically vital substance
Bringing me closer to where
I will never be found.

Then I heard it,
And suddenly I wish my cries for help
Had never been answered
In such a way where the monkey's paw
Curls in delight.

A murmured sound of an alien motion,
Instilling dread so powerful
That the infinity surrounding me
Threatens to shatter under the tension.

It is then the question entered my mind
That shook me as I awoke–
Was I ever truly alone?
