History

The City of Lumina has often been described as two separate cities occupying the same tract of land. The Eastern and Western sides live with one another mostly peacefully despite a great deal of friction between their ways of life and beliefs.

On the Eastern side of Lumina you will find delicate and soaring architecture with glowing embers that never sputter out in the lanterns lining perfectly white stone pathways. Eastern Lumina is mostly inhabited by those who practice magic of one form or another. Healers, potion makers, transmogrification, and magical experimentation can be found around most corners in the Eastern side. The style of clothing in Eastern Lumina favours scholarly robes and waistcoats, hair colours tend towards anything unnatural or delightful.

Western Lumina is, by harsh contrast to the pastel Eastern side, a bustling metropolis in varying shades of brown and grey. Shining brass contraptions held together by leather and cogs and the desperate attention of the Engineers are seen all over. They power the water pumps and small clockwork pets, the streetlights in Western Lumina are rarely bright enough to see by at night, casting only a watery orange glow around them which flickers and dims every few moments.

Engineers and Mages have a long-standing feud over the management of Lumina, evidenced in the vicious political campaigns every two years as well as in the sneering attitude of a sick engineer who would rather cough and hack and hope for the best than visit the mages for healing or a smug mage proclaiming many of the clockwork contraptions 'death traps' and lamenting the 'poisonous fumes' belching out of many machines.

Recently

Several earthquakes in the area have opened up what appear to be a series of caverns heading into the earth and, for the first time in anyone's memory, the lights in both Eastern and Western Lumina have gone out. Hour long blackouts, sometimes longer, now plague the city without obvious cause.
