It's that time of the year again, folks. When the days start getting darker and I start to get that horror itch again. Below are a few ideas for stories - some are more fleshed out than others.

also, I should say upfront that I have basically no limits when it comes to non-sexual content. I'm a horror movie aficionado, so bring me all your fucked up ideas. we don't judge here.

in space, no one can hear you scream
inspiration:
the alien franchise, the expanse, prospect (2018), red rising, blade runner, dead space, the thing
themes I'd like to play around with:
  • unfettered space capitalism and the horrors that a system like that unfolds - having to pay for basic necessities of life like clean oxygen and recycled water. high-tech despair soothed by high-tech vices; designer drugs, holo-cams and VR experiences, etc
  • evil corporations putting profits over human lives
  • the outer rim is the last foothold of civilization in the galaxy, but there are Things that lurk beyond in the uncharted darkness.
    • the outer rim is also basically the wild west, because the imperial core finds it difficult to project its influence that far out into space
  • the effects of characters growing up on different planets. an earthborn (terran?) character would find the gravity of mars to be ridiculously light. people from lighter-grav planets becoming taller and thinner than others
the plot:

at this point I have a jumble of ideas, tropes and aesthetics and very little actual plot
  • a team of scientists working for a medtech company travels space to find new specimens on unexplored planets - anything that might be medically useful. they find something new - something that ought to have remained undiscovered. something they would all regret unleashing onto the worlds.
    • could be any number of things: some kind of mutant virus, a monstrous alien like a xenomorph, a symbiote that learns more about how to act human with every brain it eats? drug-induced rage berserkers who board ships to kill/rape/eat the inhabitants (reavers in firefly, ascomanni in red rising)? or just straight up undead creatures
    • not only do they have to escape, their company orders them to risk their lives in bringing whatever it is back
alternatively;
  • a motley crew of fugitives are fleeing from the law in their spaceship/home and are forced to go where the empire will not - past the outer rim. uncharted space. they might find their salvation, but will probably just find their deaths.

carry on, my wayward son
inspiration:
supernatural! the tv show. but really, it's mostly just generic urban fantasy stuff - no knowledge of the show required.

yes, this is where I pull out the character I created for this universe, a hunter and his badass mom as his support system. he'll answer any call for help, no matter how far he has to drive to get there. got a problem of the occult variety? he's your man

plot ideas:
  • YC buys a haunted item or is gifted one by accident. a mirror, a piece of art, a locket they can't quite open. they start seeing spirits no on else can see, moving menacingly toward them. so they run as far and as fast as they can before calling for help
  • YC is in a psychiatric institution because they have vivid dreams of horrors and can see beyond the mortal plane. no one believes them when they talk about the impending apocalypse. until one day they receive a visitor - it's colt, and he believes them
  • YC recently lost their romantic partner and in desperation attempted a ritual to bring them back, to disastrous results
  • YC is a single parent with a young child, and they are worried their kid is possessed by something terrible

the ritual
inspiration:
longlegs, fallen, the x-files, the ninth gate, constantine, the autopsy of jane doe

two experienced murder detectives encounter a strange series of murders that appear to be occult in nature. eventually they discover the murders are meant as sacrifices in a ritual. what they don't know is - sacrifices to who...or what, exactly?

alternatively, one character is an experienced murder detective (and skeptic) and the other is a professor/academic sometimes shunned by their peers for their belief in the supernatural. the detective seeks out the professor to decipher the sigils carved onto bodies.
