THE RESIDENTS

The hotel stands with its old bones and quiet lungs, a house that holds its breath. Light pools on the carpets like low water. The clocks are wrong or missing. Elevators open on floors nobody asked for. Names slip at the tongue’s edge and fall away. The walls listen.

They keep small relics in their pockets; burned matchbooks, a key that fits nothing, a note written in a hand they do not recall. They walk the corridors soft-footed so as not to wake the rooms. The staff smile the way saints do in ruined churches. In the late hours come the watchers in feathered faces, men who count without speaking, and they move like a storm through the halls.

In the mirrors a second life peers back, thinner and truer. Debts are tallied in the hush between heartbeats. The house remembers who arrived and who never left. These are the ones who reside within The Yorick Hotel.

The six stats are flavor-first. They’ll be considered in the writing, but the fiction comes first; the prose isn’t strictly beholden to the numbers.

PHYSIQUE
β€” Physical strength, stamina, endurance, and toughness.

RESOLVE
β€” Willpower, discipline, and resistance to stress or coercion.

LUCIDITY

PRESENCE
β€” Charisma, confidence, and ability to impress or sway others.

ENTROPY
β€” Unpredictability and chaotic influence; luck for good or ill.

LUGGAGE

β€Žβ€” Clothing Choice: In his room's wardrobe, he always has the choice between two outfits. First, the suit: charcoal two-button, slightly shiny at the elbows; white dress shirt, loosened black tie; scuffed oxford shoes; a frayed hotel laundry tag stitched inside the jacket pocket. Second, the shirt and jeans; vintage Tiffany tour shirt ("I Think We're Alone Now"), soft and sun-faded; dark denim jeans; beat-up Reeboks sneakers.
β€” "Do Not Disturb" sign with someone else's initials written at the top.
β€” Burnt Ballroom matchbook with a phone extension scrawled inside.
β€” A note to self: "Find the concierge!!!" written in black Sharpie.
β€” A brass letter opener with a pommel bearing the hotel's crest, engraved with the words S'emper Revertimur'.

BACKGROUND

Mister Goodness woke to a room that knew his shape better than he did. The staff treat him as a long-term guest; the ledger gives him a number and a smile, never a past. He moves through the halls as if following the wake of someone he once was: counting chimes, testing doors, learning the grammar of a building that lies when spoken to.

After midnight the elevators run without passengers. A lobby phone sometimes rings with his own voice on the line, asking a question he almost understands. Sometimes he finds a path that feels like leaving, and sometimes he even takes it. By morning the hotel has folded the map back to the first page. He remembers there was a rule, and that it mattered, but not the words.

They call him Mister Goodness and he wears the name like a borrowed coat. He has died here and started again. The hotel remembers even when he cannot, and he walks its corridors with the care of a man reading scripture in a language he can never fully comprehend.
