Ansulf is the fourthborn son of the Lindharts, of the Noble House Steinbrannt, in the Thrythweald Oligarchy. He is tall and broad, muscular and dour, but has many hobbies that belie such an appearance. In the war between the Oligarchy and the Principality to the south, he was instrumental in designing and developing the grimwalt - a piece of armor which dampened the magic users of the Principality, and ultimately turned the tide of the war.
As part of the terms of the armistice that followed, he was wed to Magnolie, and they were made to live in, and preside over, a village that defended a pivotal Thryth fort. Mere days after their wedding, however, he was called away to war again, in the east, against the Oguz. That conflict lasted three years, but it was two more past that before he returned home to Magnolie, without so much as a letter written to her.

Magnolie is the eldest daughter of Draswil Matei, and High Priestess of Hecate in the Principality of Moadlochrima. She is lithe and resilient, quiet and mysterious, and given towards independence even at the cost of her own comforts. Her command of The Gifts of Hecate before The Severing was great, although he role as a priestess frequently warranted her sending wayward souls on to their resting place rather than reanimating the dead.
Her mother, Camellia Alpenrose, was an esteemed elder of the Draoithe, a nomadic, druidic tribe which wanders the western coast of the Principality in accordance with the seasons. Although the Draoithe do not have what many consider 'conventional' positions of nobility, their elders are frequently esteemed in the Principality as being superior to many nobles. The Draoithe play a very important part in the Principality's ecosystem, and revere Ishtar. Certain of their young undergo a ritual whereby they commune with Ishtar, but Magnolie was denied this opportunity by her father, who wished her role in the necromancer's hierarchy to subsume her druidic identity.
Her intended, Akalaer, was struck down in battle during the war between the Oligarchy and the Principality. Part of the armistice saw to her being wed to a Thryth nobleman, in an attempt to recoup the station she would have lost by not marrying into Lochriman nobility.
