Name: Alarik Valhyan; his full title being 'Alarik Valhyan, Earl of Ravinet', though he dislikes pointless formalities.
Age: 26 years old
Weight: 161 lbs.
Height: 5'11"
Gender: Male
Race/
Species: Human
Looks: Alarik has dark brown hair that oftentimes has to be put to the comb lest his natural curls get too much out of control. The length of his hair is kept relatively short and generally does not go too far past his ears. Sharp hazel eyes framed by long lashes rest below narrow, thin brows. His face is pale and angular, and while it could never be considered a 'boyish' face, it does possess a certain youthful quality to it that is likely helped by his energetic movements and overall quick posture. Being a professional duelist, Alarik never quite sheds his alert stance, and moves with purposeful, elegant strides that double as a clear trait for a member of the nobility. As far as body structure goes, Valhyan is built tall, slender, and long-legged: a fighter that favors dexterity and agility over brute force. At first glance, Alarik is often perceived as an imperious (and slightly intimidating) individual, though this insubstantial veneer is prone to fall apart after prolonged interaction with him.
As an homage to his family's crest and its colors, Alarik's more ceremonial clothing is tailored with the vivid colors of crimson and gold, though in more casual situations - such as when undergoing a trip or staying indoors - his clothing is leagues more simple, consisting of a lightweight tunic and stiff black trousers kept in place by an ordinary drawstring. Oftentimes a scabbard, too, will be fastened around Alarik's waist, holding his favored blade in its sheath. It is also not uncommon for Alarik to be hiding a small knife in his boots that can be used for a spectrum of purposes: dining, cutting, and last-resort self-defense.
Personality: As mentioned above, Alarik is considered by many of the strangers who claim to know him to be a lordly and arrogant figure. He certainly looks the part; whether at the court or the dueling strip, he exudes a strange blend of aggression and confidence that leaks towards haughtiness with every display. In short, Valhyan, when compared to the others in the ranks of the nobility, possesses an 'other-ness' not often seen in their numbers. He dislikes putting on a show when it comes to political discourse to the point of not attempting it at all, and instead gets along better with his lower-caste guards and servants, preferring their humble company over another equal. When it comes to other events of the nobility, he's a rare visitor, often only showing up if a duel is to occur and/or he needs to negotiate a trade deal. Still, Alarik is still quite clearly a noble - both through his way of speech and use of authority, he couldn't be mistaken for a commoner. He still acts like a noble, though with obvious reluctance.
Past this façade, however, Alarik displays a much more 'open' side of his personality to those that he trusts. His cold gaze evaporates into a sensitive look - he becomes receptive to people's emotions and actions, and strives to understand them - he allows himself to crack a genuine smile. However, this state of mind also allows him to release his raw anger and bitterness that is otherwise kept at bay. While not prone to outbursts, those close to Alarik are at an increased chance of seeing his frustration and sadness at the state of things take control in the long hours of the night.
Backstory: Born the second son of Rowan and Katerina Valhyan, Alarik Valhyan grew into a relatively soft life. His brother Marius, five years his senior, watched over him with a fierce and protective love; his parents, while emotionally distant in their later years, were attentive to their children's needs and made sure to show their sons what a loving relationship looked like. Alarik's father - the current Earl of Ravinet at that time - would often tow him and his brother around the kingdom as they became older, showing the boys the skills needed to get along with neighboring nobility, royal ambassadors, etcetera. Likewise, their mother taught them how to read and write alongside several tutors (Alarik was a slow learner when it came to the scholarly arts, and still isn't much of an academic). Similar to his brother Marius, however, Alarik excelled in combat, and would spend hours upon hours in their estate's courtyard, dueling Marius while chirping out heroic proclamations, pretending that he was a dragon-slayer of old, hunting down one of the last legendary beasts. The Valhyans still knew of and celebrated their heritage generations later, and even today possess several family heirlooms passed down throughout the centuries.
As Alarik reached adolescence, disturbances and events began to chip away at the strong foundations of the Valhyan family. It began when Marius left in the dead of night at around the time Alarik was fifteen, stopping only at his brother's room to say goodbye. He claimed that he was abandoning the materialistic world that the nobility so heavily favored, and journeying eastwards to a secretive monastery that would welcome him as a new member. Marius took only a change of clothes and the scraps of food left from the previous night's feast. He left immediately after his brief discussion with Alarik and never returned. To this day, Alarik knows nothing of his brother's whereabouts nor his reasons for leaving so abruptly.
This, of course, disrupted the family immensely: it was no secret that Marius was the favored son and designated heir to the family's estate and land, being the more capable brother in political interactions and presenting as an amiable yet professional negotiator in all manners of noble life. This is not to say that his parents were dismissive of Alarik in exchange, though it was clear Alarik had been more or less left to his own devices as a budding duelist and potential military officer in his brother's wake. This all changed, however, after Marius's disappearance, and Alarik was forced to fill in the shoes his brother had left him with dubious success. His transition from a combat-centric individual to makeshift heir-apparent was hastily done, and to this day it's clear he was not raised to attend diplomatic discussions and court parties, but rather born to command armies and don gleaming armor.
Nowadays, Alarik is a sedentary spirit, more or less 'going through the motions' than doing anything of importance with his life. With his father succumbing to sickness six years previous and his mother descending into raving madness in the past three, Alarik is vaguely aware that he will soon be the only one left in the Valhyan line, and have to soon take on a wife to produce an heir. Alarik has postponed this to the point of absurdity despite numerous complaints from neighboring nobility and his own estate - simply because Alarik, despite his official titles and land possessions, still has never felt like the Earl of Ravinet.
