Minna grew up in the same village as Eren, Mikasa and Armin, the Shiganshina District of Wall Maria. Her father was a farmer, while her mother was a home maker and artist. Minna grew up with three brothers and was very loved by them. She grew up tough, competitive, and brave. When she turned thirteen, her eldest twin brother's Marcus and Casey became recruits, and Casey would successfully join the Survey Corps whereas Marcus would join the garrison in charge of protecting Wall Maria.
Minna's family was very closely bonded with the Arlert family as they were neighbours for most of her youth. Minna would form a close bond with a young Armin Arlert as she would often look after him as a child.
When the wall fell and Titan's swarmed her village, Minna, who had been assisting her father in the fields, was forced into hiding. In a desperate attempt to locate her mother and younger brother, Minna disobeyed her father's wishes and ran towards her home, only to find it destroyed, discovering the amputated left hand of her mother amongst the rubble, identifying it via the ring that was still attached to her bloody finger. Minna would soon find herself toe to toe to a small, 4m Titan, freezing in terror. Unable to find the will to escape, she was saved purely by the miraculous appearance of her brother Marcus, who had rushed to check upon his family as soon as he discovered the wall was breached.
Marcus defeated the Titan and during the battle, Minna was able to locate her younger brother, Yash, beneath the rubble, alive but having broken his legs. As they worked to free him, an aberrant appeared, with long arms and legs, crawling on all fours at an astounding speed. Shortly thereafter, she would join the Survey Corps alongside Petra and Oluo and would be handpicked for Levi's squad due to her impressive stat's.

- Minna sustained a permanent injury during her battle with The Female Titan where she dislocated her left soldier, rending her left arm weaker (and more fragile) than her right.
- Minna's younger brother Yash would lose the use of his legs after the Wall Maria was breached. He is cared for permanently by his father, while Minna and Casey send their wages home.
- Minna enjoys drawing (a passion she inherited from her mother) but she is really, really bad at it. She keeps a journal of her drawings and they're all terrible. (Upon discovering, Levi has the sense to pretend he likes them; somewhat because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings but mostly because he likes the way she looks when she draws.
- After the death of her squad, there were whispers that Minna only survived because she fled. In reality, she fought until her gas ran out. The female Titan managed to strike her (a strike she would've been quick enough to dodge had her gear not run out of gas), the hit caused her to hit a tree and spin out until she connected with the ground. She was severely injured and winded and only survived due to Eren's transformation and frenzied attack.
