The team was gone.
Split up just like that, and sometimes Lloyd wondered if they'd ever really existed at all. The silence was the worst part. The Destiny's Bounty still lay in ruins. Wu and Misako buried themselves in blueprints, already drafting the skeleton of a new ship. Nya had offered up her Samurai X cave as a workspace. Practical. Efficient. But it wasn't home. The old Bounty had been more than just a ship. Every scorched cable, every cracked tile told a story. Even the smoke-stained ceilings still carried the ghost of old memories, and no one, not even a royal chef, could recreate the smell of whatever fusion stew Zane used to make.
Zane.
Gone.
Lloyd had said it outloud many times, but it still didn't feel real yet. It sat in his throat like a stone. And every time he helped someone, every time a civilian pressed a flower into his hand or gave him a crumpled letter about a fallen hero, he wanted to scream. He never did. Some nights, he understood why the others had walked away. Cole, Jay, and Kai, they had each other before he came into the picture. Brothers, not just teammates. Zane's death hadn't just wounded them; it hollowed them out. And when one piece of a whole dies, sometimes there's no glue strong enough to hold the rest together. Lloyd had tried to keep them together. Thought it was the right thing. Maybe it was. But he couldn't force them.
Cole was working at a mill now. Lloyd visited once never touched the ground. Just watched from the trees, hidden in shadow, while Cole moved like a ghost below: hauling logs, chopping, lifting. His face was a mask. Blank. Angry around the edges. He barely spoke to anyone. Just worked. Like he was punishing himself. Lloyd couldn't bring himself to call out.
Kai had vanished, until rumors started circling of a red-shogun fighter tearing through illegal wrestling circuits. Lloyd found him once, some low-ceilinged bar, neon flickering, sticky with old blood. He watched Kai dismantle a man in a cage match, like it was nothing, afterward slumped at the bar, nursing a bottle like it was keeping him from burning alive.
Jay... Jay was impossible to miss. Game shows, commercials, late-night talk interviews. Always talking. Always smiling. Lloyd didn't even have to look for him, he was on every screen. It made Lloyd wonder if Jay was afraid of the silence more than anything. If noise was the only thing keeping him from unraveling. Lloyd kept busy. He saved cats from trees. Cut ribbons at mall openings. Gave speeches. Signed foreheads. Took photos. Laughed on cue. None of it meant a damn thing. And then, one night, something snapped, or maybe finally clicked. He needed them. All of them. And he was going to get them back together. Not mourn in pieces, but as whole. So he found them. One by one. Used favors. Lied a little to get them where he wanted. Whatever it took to drag them to Chen's Noodle House. It was the first time in a long time the four of them sat together. Cole was halfway through his third bowl, shoveling noodles like he hadn't eaten in days. He barely looked up, only rolled his eyes every time Jay opened his mouth to complain about missing a taping for the new season of his game show. Kai reeked of booze. His hands were wrapped in bandages He glared at Jay with heat and Jay didn't hold back either, barbed words, sarcasm, tension so thick the whole table felt like it might snap. It almost fell apart. Then some idiots tried to rob the place. It wasn't a fair fight. It wasn't even close. The four of them moved like instinct, like no time has past between them, no words, no hesitation. Chairs broke. Tables flipped. Plates shattered. They followed them into the back alley and gone they were. But hope had found them, and for once, they all agreed. That was the moment they started listening to Lloyd again. If there was a chance Zane was still alive, they would grab it.
It's how they ended up here. Midnight The dock was alive with noise voices, footsteps, crates being unloaded, sails flapping in salt-stained wind. Lanterns swung in the dark, casting long shadows over the water. Lloyd stood near the edge, mask pulled down, breathing slow. He muttered, mostly to himself, "What a party." Jay appeared at his side, bouncing on the balls of his feet. His eyes swept the crowd. "Are these all... Elemental Masters too?" Lloyd didn't answer right away. He scanned the dock. Too many unfamiliar faces. Too many people standing too confidently. They all seem to know where they were headed, know what they signed up for.
"If they are," Lloyd said, arms folded, voice low, "then where the have they been?"
Jay let out a sharp laugh, too loud. "Look at that," he said, elbowing Cole. "We've even got a walking museum piece." He nodded toward a man standing across the dock. The guy looked like he'd stepped straight out of an old war scroll, layered robes, armor polished but aged, every inch of him wrapped except his eyes. And those eyes were fixed directly on Jay. Cold. Flat. The man didn't say a word. He just turned his back and walked away. "I think he heard you," Cole said, a smirk tugging at his lip. Jay shifted his stance, arms crossing. "Ya think?" Lloyd slapped the back of his head. "Maybe don't make enemies in the first minute," he said.
Before Jay could fire back, another voice cut through the noise. "Lloyd, don't do this." He froze Familiar. He turned. "Dad?" Garmadon was pushing through the crowd, cloak trailing behind him, eyes sharp. "What are you doing here?" Lloyd asked.
