Today was the big Halloween camp out on the sprawling acres of woodland owned by Anna Baker's bachelor Uncle, he always went on this luxury singles cruise every year to 'sow his wild oats' or whatever the hell he called it. So long as they didn't do any damage to anything, Anna's Uncle didn't mind if they used his property for their campout, he even left Anna the keys to the small hunting cabin that sat near their campsite in case the night got too cold.
The guys Taylor and Evan were pitching the tents up, while the girls Anna, Vivian and Lindsey went into the woods to gather up any many good sticks, twigs and fallen branches as they could carry back… Anna knew the woods like the back of her own hand as she had been playing in them since she could walk and she found the instructions for those darn tents way too darn confusing, so this arrangement worked out for everyone involved. Easy set up indeed! Lying box.
By the time the girls arrived back to the site, the two guys had the tents set up and were getting all their cookout stuff arranged on the unfolding card table, the hot dogs, buns, ketchup and mustard, plus all the stuff for s'mores. They even thought about the roasting sticks.
"Thanks, guys, you hunted down everything we need to get started" Anna praised them with a smile as she and the two other girls set down their armfulls of sticks and branches beside the firepit Anna's uncle had professionally installed for them.
"Tonight is going to be great!" Vivian said cheerfully as she walked over to claim one of the camping chairs that had been placed out "It's Halloween… we got delicious food, s'mores, plus I brought a huge stash of candy… and everyone prepared a scary story to share, right? I know I certainly did"
"I don't have a story, but I did bring something pretty spooky to show everyone" Evan said "It's in my bag, set me up a chair and I'll go get it. You good to start the fire,Taylor?"
The fire was lit quickly, casting them all in its warm glow as the setting sun began plunging the woods in night's darkness.
Taylor nodded and Evan headed into the tent designated for the boys to use, emerging a short while later with a huge leather bound books in his hands, it was such a dark green it almost looked black, but when the firelight caught it, you could tell by the shine that it was actually just a very deep green. On the front there were letters elegantly embossed in glistening gold.
Anna came to sit down beside Evan and gave the book a questioning stare, she wasn't sure exactly why, but the thing made her feel a little bit uneasy… like it gave her the creeps or something "Biblia Sine Animas? Sounds like Latin. I'd try to google the meaning, but our phones don't get much service out here, if any"
"Bilia I think means bible and anima means soul, but I don't know Sine or why it says animas instead of just anima" Vivian said, shrugging at them "I studied a little bit of Latin back in high school, but I got bored and quit. Sorry I couldn't translate more"
Evan flipped open the heavy cover "I flipped through it a little bit when I found it in my grandparents antique shop, it was hidden away in the way back… Grandma asked me to move some of the boxes to make it tidier and then sweep up the place… but you know, maybe I snooped around a bit… but anyway, this thing is really weird and creepy, it talks about monsters a lot and world domination"
"What kind of crap is that?" Taylor chuckled, taking the book from Evan's hands and flipping a few of the pages "Everyone knows that monsters aren't real, this is probably just some old antique Halloween prop or something in that vein"
"I know monsters aren't real!" Evan exclaimed, snatching the book back from Taylor "And could you please be careful? I need to be able to put this back in the condition it was or my Grandma will know someone took it out from the storage room. I just thought it was kinda spooky and would be a bit of fun for Halloween, you know?"
Taylor shrugged with a smile "Sure, I mean why not, it is Halloween and obviously no harm can come from indulging in something all of us grown adults know isn't real"
"I don't know…" Anna said, giving the book another wary glance "Maybe we shouldn't be messing with something we don't understand… we don't know anything about this book beyond the fact Evan pilfered it from his trusting grandmother"
Evan gave Anna a 'oh hush you' kind of glare before flipping it open "Oh Anna, like Taylor said, monsters and magic, that stuff isn't real. Even if whomever made this book thought it might be, they are just a ginormous crackpot… I mean, it talks about summoning monsters and inviting them to conquer our world… if it was real, don't you think that would have happened by now?"
"I don't know, I guess so…" Anna relented reluctantly "I guess perhaps maybe I am being just a little bit silly and childish…"
"Oh here is the summoning incantation, but it's all in Latin… could you read it, Vivian?" Evan asked, offering the blonde girl the book "I couldn't pronounce most of that to save my life"
"Sure, hand it over, I'll give it a whirl" Vivian said "But after we prove to Anna that monsters and magic only exist in the stories we tell around this campfire, I want to make some s'mores early"
Vivian cleared her throat and began to read the Latin incantation "Creatura umbrarum et tenebrarum, exsurge ... prodite in regnum mortalis hominis, prodite et effunde super nos omnes tenebras tuas sempiternas… emundet hunc mundum lucis et noverit solas umbras. vos vel contra vos rebelles... reliquos fideles vestros et discipulos vestros extollite... exi. Exi"
Looking up, Vivian smiled "I know I got pronunciations right, but I'll be honest… I only understood half of what I just said and what I did understand was kinda creepy. Good thing this isn't real"
"Aw, lovely lady, you wound my undead heart with those words…"
Everyone jumped at the unfamiliar voice and stood up immediately from their chairs, leaning against a tree partially shrouded in shadows as the light from the fire played across his pale face… was a tall male that
looked to be around their age, maybe 20 to 25… he had long jet black hair that fell loose to his waist, glimmering from his ghostly pale face were eyes of vibrant ruby red, his ears bore multiple piercings that bordered on being a little bit excessive.
He wore a pair of simple black slacks and a black turtleneck, adorning his neck were a few silver necklaces with curious symbols and charms upon them.
"Hey buddy, this is private property! You need to leave right now!" Taylor snarled at the guy, hoping to intimidate the guy before he could potentially become a danger to the present ladies among them "Get gone, before we make you get the fuck outta here!"
Just as Evan stood up to join his friend, Taylor was suddenly struck from behind by something and sent hard down to the ground, his body was restrained in… was that… webbing?
"Oh my God!" Vivian screamed as she sprung to her feet, pointing as a bizarre shape was emerging from another part of the dark trees "What the fuck is that?!"
"Humans are so loud" The figure sneered before a shot of webbing was launched at Vivian's face.
Vivian fell to her knees as she desperately tried tearing the webbing off her face, her movements became more and more frantic as it was clear she was struggling to breathe.
Lindsey attempted t
o rush to Vivian's side, but she was quickly snatched up by a third figure that lunged forward from the darkness, Lindsey was then held aloft in the air by a large and very hairy male with a wild and crazed look on his face, gold eyes near luminous and… doggish ears atop his head?
Tapping upon the earth drew their attention and the figure responsible for the now unconscious Vivian entered into the flickering light of the campfire, Anna gasped in horror and took several steps back as she saw what looked like the torso and head of a man attached the thorax and legs of a giant spider. Instead of just two eyes, there were six strange looking eyes… his flesh was whiter than snow…
Cackling maniacally, the man spider creature grabbed Vivian by her ankles and began dragging her off into the darkness beyond the light offered by the campfire.
"Vivian!" Anna screamed, she wanted to run forward and grab Vivian's wrists or to do anything at all really, but she was so scared, she couldn't bring herself to move even an inch… next she knew she was being grabbed by the shoulders and yanked hard back against the chest of the ruby eyed male "Let go of me!!"
"Monsters… real monsters…" Evan stammered, his hands holding the leather bound book trembled "But… monsters aren't real… this wasn't supposed to be real…"
The ruby eyed man laughed gleefully "Biblia Sine Animas… Bible of the Soulless… because only a soulless individual would open the portal to the realm of monsters and invite us to come and take over your world as its new masters… I didn't think I would lay eyes upon that tome again ever since I witnessed its creation so many centuries ago… it was written by the mother of monsters, Lilith… gifted to a favorite high priestess with of her many mortal covens… last we heard, it had been lost when templars raided the temple of Lilith where it was held… how humorous that it wound up in the hands of mortals that had no idea just exactly what Pandora's box they had just opened up…"
"No… no…" Evan stammered, horror growing in his eyes, he stumbled a few steps back before he took off running into the night.
"Ugh… Xenif, would you stop toying with that mortal and please go take care of that pesky runner, hm? The ruby eyed male drawled as he shifted his gaze towards the hairy individual with the canine ears.
"Why do you do it, Altarion?!" Xenif snarled, turned his head to send a vicious look towards the other male.
"Because Lilith placed me in charge above all of her Generals!" Altarion seethed back. His ruby eyes shimmering angrily "Now do as I say, you mangy mutt!"
The strange hairy fellow Xenif growled at Altarion before effortlessly snapping Lindsey's neck and dropping her lifeless and limp to the ground before tearing off after Evan.
"Alone at last…" Altarion whispered with a dark chuckle in Anna's ear "You're the lucky one, if I may be so honest… I like you… you won't die like all of your friends…"
"Please… please let me go…" Anna sobbed softly, turning her head to look back at the handsome pale face of the man restraining her "Please…"
"What do you think will happen if I just let you go, hm? Very soon, under the leadership of us three Generals, monsters will pour forth from the realm of monsters into your world… without me, you'll either die or be enslaved…" Altarion replied, he grinned at her in way that made two very sharp canines gleam in the firelight… fangs… this guy had fucking fangs!
Anna stomped the heel of her right foot into his as hard as she could, using his moment of shock and to ram her foot backwards into his groin next… the moment he released her to grunt and gasp in pain, Anna sped off into the dark trees, tears spilled from her eyes over the fate of her friends and her own uncertain fate.
From somewhere in the forest, Anna heard the terrified scream of Evan, followed by terrible cries of pain… and then, nothing…
In the next moment, Anna was tackled to the forest floor… ruby red eyes, amused and bordering on insanity looked down at her as hands with a grip like iron restrained her arms, his knees pinching her legs together and preventing another attack below the belt.
"Oh boy, I was right about you, I do like you… I like you a lot, you have a fire within you… I think I am going to keep you with me for a long, long time. Happy Halloween, my sweet..." Altaion chuckled, he opened his mouth wide and lunged down for Anna's neck, her sharp scream filling the cool forest air.
