First of all, welcome to my first-ever group request thread. Some of you may have clicked on this thread out of curiosity--others may have been coerced. Whatever the reason, I hope you read on--and, perhaps, even apply to join. Now let's get on to the meat of the matter, shall we?
In the year 2,456 A.D., life on Earth was officially classified as uninhabitable. Climate change gradually upset the balance of the ecosystems on the planet to the point that humans could not survive. Over half of the planet was a dry, arid wasteland where frequently soared close to 100 degrees Celsius. The rest of the planet was frozen over in thick sheets of ice. Very little life remained on the planet. Fortunately, one hundred years earlier a large segment of the human population escaped the dying planet in giant spacecraft called the Cradles.
The Cradles were designed for one purpose, to carry the remnants of humankind across the galaxies in search of another planet to call home. Each Cradle set course in a different direction of the others with the hope of succeeding in finding a habitable planets where the others may not. Over 99.99% of the humans aboard each Cradle were put into into a cryogenic stasis. Each Cradle had 5 crews that maintained and piloted the vessels. One crew maintained the Cradle for 365 Earth days, while the other 4 were in stasis. At the end of the crew's rotation, another crew was awoken and the former crew went into stasis. This cycle allowed the Cradles to maintained for hundreds of years by the original crew members.
In 3,278 A.D. the Cradle designated "Salvation" identified a planet that could sustain human life. Even better, by all appearances, it seemed that humanity would thrive on the newly discovered world. The crew called the planet "Veridia", and soon advance expeditionary teams were sent to the planet's surface to explore and report their findings back to Salvation.
What the advance teams discovered came as quite a shock. Veridia, though similar to Earth in many ways, was having an unexpected effect on some of the members of the teams. After only a few short days of exploration, some members claimed that they could do unnatural things. Some were able to seemingly manipulate reality with their thoughts or spoken words. Others became physically enhanced beyond the normal bounds of what humans were capable. Many remained unaffected. And then there were the unfortunate ones.
A very small number of the advanced expedition teams were horribly mutated. The mutations varied, and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to them, but everyone of them became horribly deformed and were driven insane to be point of becoming feral in nature. These poor souls became known as the "Stranged" and despite their insanity and many deformities, they were quite dangerous. Many of the Stranged possessed powerful abilities that could kill in an instant, and their tolerance for pain and physical abuse was far greater than a normal human's, which allowed them endure incredible punishment to their bodies.
The crew on Salvation decided that Veridia, despite its abnormal effects on some humans, would be the best hope for the continuation of humanity. Salvation prepared to disembark its precious cargo. The Cradle entered the planet's atmosphere. The crew prepared to make a controlled landing not far from one of Veridia's ocean's. However, a phenomenon occurred, and Salvation briefly lost all power. Without thrusters to control its landing or maintain the vessel's course, Salvation was doomed to crash land into the ocean.
The captain called for the slumbering humans to be evacuated immediately. Several escape shuttles filled with cryopods were launched from Salvation. But minutes later, Salvation's power came back online. With only seconds to spare, the crew was able to correct Salvation's course so that it would no longer land in the sea. Unfortunately, what would have been a neatly controlled landing became a controlled crash landing for the gigantic vessel. Lives were lost. Almost half of the crew and thousands of slumbering passengers died in the landing, which ripped the Salvation in half.
The survivors of the Crash were able to awaken most of the remaining humans. Together they formed the first human city on Veridia, which was named after the Cradle that had brought them there.
Ten years have passed since the Crash, and many of the escape shuttles that became scattered across the surface of Veridia are now exhausting the last of their power, which has kept the cryopods in them functioning for a decade. The humans awakening for first time in centuries have no clue where they are or what has happened. This is where our story begins...
"Meta-Humans" is the collective term used to describe the humans who were mysteriously altered by Veridia. They come in three varieties: Shapers, Knights, and the Stranged. For the purposes of this roleplay, only Shapers, Knights, and unaltered humans will be playable.
- Shapers - These meta-humans can shape reality itself, transforming the world around them with their willpower alone. However, Shaping requires a great familiarity with the new reality the Shaper is trying to impose on the world. For example, a Shaper cannot create fire without first having, at least, a simple understanding of how fire works. Doing more complex things with fire (i.e. making fire balls, creating things made from fire, etc.) requires a deeper understanding. This effectively limits a Shaper's ability to his/her knowledge. Shaping takes energy from both the world around the Shaper and the Shaper him/herself. With each consecutive Shaping, a Shaper grows more weary. Grander Shapings take much more energy than simple Shapings.
- Knights - Meta-humans who have gained incredible physical prowess. Knights gain a boost to all of their physical traits (endurance, strength, speed, etc.) that puts them at the very peak of the human range. However, two of those traits are boosted even further to be much above the range of human capabilities. Knights constantly and unconsciously draw from the energies around them to fuel their heightened abilities, however, this alone is not enough to sustain them. Knights require more than triple the calorie intake of the average human to keep their bodies energized. If their caloric requirements are not met their abilities quickly fade.
- The Stranged - The Stranged are meta-humans who adversely affected by Veridia. They became twisted and deformed. Many have sprouted extra appendages, mouths, and eyes--and not all of them are of human origin. The Stranged possess inhuman physical capabilities that often dwarf even the capabilities of Knights. They have also been known to manifest powers that could be compared to that of Shapers. They are considered feral and are almost always driven completely insane by their transformation. The Stranged are avoided or combated whenever possibly, because they seem to have a deep hatred for humans who are not Stranged.
Of the eight cryopods onboard Shuttle 565-B1, only 4 opened when the shuttle's power supply finally failed. Two had malfunctioned. The humans inside those two had suffocated to death before they could awaken. Another was open and abandoned, seemingly, for quite some time. The final cryopod looked to have been smashed open from the inside. The only thing inside of that pod were claw marks a viscous black fluid that smelled like rot and decay.
The four survivors of Shuttle 565-B1 are the focus of Chapter One. These four passengers will not only have to come to terms with a new world, but possibly new abilities. Furthermore, they must decide what their next course of action should be. Should they look for other survivors? Perhaps investigate what has happened to them and the others? Certainly, they should try to continue surviving.

The main story, which will be one or more group roleplays, will be separated into short to moderately length chapters. Each Chapter will occur in a separate thread. Between Chapters, members of the group may withdraw their characters, if they wish for a break, and new members may be recruited. This will, hopefully, ensure that if people are getting bored with the story, they can withdraw at regular intervals without feeling guilty about abandoning the roleplay.
Sagas are 1-on-1 roleplays based on two of the characters from the main story. Anything that happens in the Sagas will be considered canon to the main story, and so Sagas will allow for side plots to progress, as well as, character development outside of the main story.
If you wish to start a Saga, by all means, go ahead. My only wish is to be informed of what is happening in the Saga, so that it can posted in the Chronicles (a separate post in this thread which will have Chapter and Saga summaries).
