Hi everyone. I've been in such a creative funk lately that I'm just trying to grasp at the few things that bring me joy. A friend of mine showed me episode 1 of Netflix's Castlevania and I was immediately hooked. It has everything I like - great costumes, cool magic, badass vampires, scary demons and of course, banter. However, I'm not much of a fandom roleplayer, simply because I don't enjoy being limited to canon details. What I am proposing instead is to take the rough outlines & tropes of the series and make them something new with OCs. I'm deliberately keeping genders out of my ideas because I'm open for m/m or m/f. The only fixed character is the male hunter.

I have an itch to write a hunter - a regular human with no powers other than a can-do attitude and a family name to live up to. Falsely stoic and deeply lonely, travelling from town to town dragging demon corpses behind him and selling his services as an exterminator of night creatures. The last scion of a legendary house dedicated to the protection of the surrounding towns from demonic forces. Slightly too fond of wine and rough around the edges. He'll defend humans because he thinks it's his duty, but he certainly doesn't like them.

I could pair him with:

gruff, burly vampire hunter x the much smaller magician with immense power that secretly scares the shit out of them
I love this trope. I can't even count the ways. He knows about and respects magic, but he doesn't like it. Mostly because he doesn't know how to use it. This is a great opposites attract type situation: the jaded and cynical veteran of a hundred battles and a sheltered and idealistic acolyte who spent most of their lives in an ivory tower

vampire hunter x a benevolent vampire or half-vampire
He usually prefers to kill vampires, but when he stumbles on something far too powerful for him to deal with he's forced to team up with a creature of the night to defeat the worse creature of the night. Cue tons of bickering, barbs and insults - and maybe a grudging respect that grows as they bond over the mission. Perhaps this vampire is old and refined, maybe they've encountered members of the hunter's family in the past and finds the comparison unfavorable. Or maybe they're a younger creature who doesn't like what their kin are plotting - forcing the hunter to re-evaluate his assumptions about evil

the world:
Let's make this together. My only request is that it be set in a vaguely "medieval" time period. I'm completely open to alt histories, parallel universes, worldwide portal networks and other shenanigans. I try to "yes, and" with partners regarding worldbuilding. Some ideas I'd definitely like to explore are:

  • vampire aristocracy. when you're immortal, it turns out that accumulating wealth and power is easy. are they open about what they are, or do they pull strings from the shadows?
  • a corrupt and venal church used as a tool of oppression and social control. stoking fear and hatred against minorities, spreading misinformation about how to protect people from monsters
  • different cultures having their own unique magic systems
  • humans being just as evil as demons sometimes - are they still worth saving?

plot beats:
None of this is set in stone. Just throwing out ideas and seeing what sticks
  • the pope is a vampire: yes. maybe he's old as fuck and has developed some kind of immunity to the sun over the years. or he's using other dark rituals to enable him to walk in sunlight. giving a literal meaning to "drinking the blood of christ". I love a good sacrilegious plot.
  • a conspiracy to wake something that really shouldn't be awake: like maybe the literal devil. or opening a door to hell. or bringing back the king of vampires. something very suspicious is afoot. a lot of people are going to die very horribly unless someone can stop it

Let's talk. I have a head full of ideas, and I'd love to hear yours.
