Occasionally, he gets hired to take out a dangerous person, or it happens in some rescue situations. He does this work on his own and doesn't work for law enforcement, though he sometimes will assist law enforcement, particularly during SAR situations. His normal profession is a photographer: he has his own studio but also works for various outdoor magazines to provide photographs of nature or wildlife. I added in his family history a marriage between a human and a shapeshifter to give him the shapeshifting gene to cross him into supernatural stories and themes.
