A path long overgrown, forgotten by time, weeds lining each step you took, trying not to tumble over roots that had broken through as you headed to the old buildings. One of your friends had been told of this place over the weekend, it looked so harmless, so beautiful, so peaceful laced in sunlight. Its windows were smashed, parts of the roof caved in from father time, mother nature was climbing its walls with ivy and moss. You stumbled towards it with your friends, there were three of you in total as you pushed at the rusted old door, its wood creaked and hinges squeaked as it opened. Silence, what did you expect from an old library hidden away by the world?

One, two, three I see
That should've been the first warning, a voice that was no quite human, yet sounded so much like it. As one of your friends called out you walked in, the door slammed behind you, unable to hold itself open now that the rust had been dislodged after pushing it open. The walls were lined with books, their scent filled your nostrils along with the smell of mould and mildew. Taking more steps inside one of them reached up to one of the wooden shelves, grabbing a book, they had come here after hearing of rare books hidden in this place. While you and another sat in a table under the dappled light of day that came through, illuminating one of few spots in the darkness engulfed library. Calling out to your friend who'd been looking at books, you heard nothing, turning they were gone, the spot where they were had a shadow for but a second, then there was a loud CRACK, then more subtle clicks. Assuming they'd simply gone somewhere else, the cracking and clicks must've been their footsteps, perhaps stepping on a broken floorboard. Neither of you thought anything of it. Then, there was scratching, lightly, like claws on the floor for but, for a second, it felt too close.
Screaming your friend caught you attention, there was something in the shadows, a large brown eye. At that point a raven flew out, it looked at you and your friend while hopping over and then gently landing on the table before flying out the gap in the roof. Calming you friend down, saying must've been the bird. Adamant it was something else you grabbed a book from a random shelf, pulling it open and handing it to your friend to calm them down.

One, two I see you
There it was, that voice, that strange voice that echoed throughout the old building. That was the second warning, no one knows why you didn't run, why you didn't try to escape it was as though something stopped you, something that made your minds ignore every alarm bell thrown at you. As your friend shifted, a bit they mentioned needing the toilet, sighing you waited, their flashlight wasn't working so you lent them yours. They asked you to come with them, but no, they were old enough to go on their own so off they went, into the darkness, just like your other friend. There was a dull thud, had they dropped the torch? You could see the light a few shelves back, it was dimming but then vanished. Shrugging, they must've picked it up so you went back to looking at the book you'd pulled from a shelf, it smelt musky. Wrinkling your nose as you opened it and flicked through pages, you called the first friend, but still nothing. CRACK, there it was again, and more clicking, this time there was a rustle. There was nothing to worry about surely?
But then it happened again, that inhuman voice echoing and louder than before as you sat there.

One left, then none left
Almost childish in its words, then there was a scrap and you looked down, the torch being kicked from the darkness, spinning wildly on the wooden floor. You frowned, what joke was this, they were so scared before and now they kicked their torch back. You shouted in frustration as you looked into the darkness, like before nothing. A few moments passed and this time you grew concerned, picking up the flickering light you traveled into the darkness. You called out, but all you got was silence and the odd clicking. You didn't hear it walk behind you, but you did tumble over something, falling forward, you caught yourself and flashed your torch, you screamed in horror. There was the first one, their skull cracked, their eyes were missing, tears of blood down their face, almost as though those empty sockets were looking right at you.
In a panic you scrambled you your feet but once more a scream echoed from your throat, the second one was leaning against the wall, once more the skull was cracked open like a walnut, but this time their ears were missing, only two gaping holes where they used to be and next....
CRACK
That was your skull, your body fell limp in a second, each moment seemed endless before you heard dragging, your first friend being dragged over to sit beside the second then it was you. But what horrified you most was the monster. This was no grotesque being. No, in the dimming, flickering light of the torch you could see a large beak, large brown eyes and pitch black feathers. But it was far bigger than normal, lowering its head the raven inspected you with a scruintising eye for a but a moment.

It sounded pleased before its head turned, a beautiful young woman could be seen for but a moment by your fading vision, her words sweet and the large raven almost nuzzled her form. "What a lovely gift, but you've yet to finish your work I see" It clicked it's beak and then, darkness. Your throat ripped out by it's large beak, killing you instantly.
One by one you and your friends had vanished into the darkness and one by one you were 'collected' by the raven as a gift for his mistress. Just because there is light outside, does not mean the darkness inside is safe. For every shadow is but another spot for them to hide away and prey on those who are too curious or careless for their own good.
