A Great New World...
We could argue all day about whether it was the war or the weather that put the world into the mess its is in now. Fact is it was us...humans, we fucked about and we found out. Now we live in a wasteland that makes its own rules and if you want to survive you better pay attention. Prepare well, find a secure location and protect it at all costs.
Very few people are equipped to step outside the safety of a townships walls. But there those that do. Whether its the caravans of traders that travel in convoys from these fortified centre's of humans refusal to die, providing commerce and supplies for a price .
To the many other factions you are likely to run into in the wonderful new world. The rule is always trust noone.
Raiders - Scumbags, the dumb ones, and all the weak ones have been killed each other off. Those left travel in caravans of vehicles at various levels of armourment. they pray on any group or individual they think they can overpower, some have even taken whole colonies if the rumours are true. They sleep wherever they can, in utility basements and the bottoms of underground parking garages, usually roaming the cities looking for places unlooted, and people unprotected.
Amongst these miscreants is a group called The Motor Chosen, a marauding gang of raiders who are answering the call of the Machine Gods. They run in packs each pack headed by a different leader. This means your interactions with each group can vary wildly.
Altruists - Not everyone is driven into wilds the by profit. Some people, and god knows why, are out there just to help anyone who needs it. Just point them toward a colony, and off they go to save them from the ne'er-do-wells, oh and they always ALWAYS have a pet.
Scavvers - While the name has stuck, not all Scavvers are actual 'scavengers.' These aren't bad people, they're just ... bad-with-people people. Most make a living finding half-functional tech or scrap and selling it to traders or directly to colonies. There are other ways to make a living though, and all that makes a scavver a scavver is choosing to live out in isolation instead of the relative safety of a colony.
Military - Well ... you won't really run into them, they're all sealed up in their high-tech bunkers while placing bets on who will be left come the end Sometimes you'll pick up their broadcasts, or they will put on a points wide bulletin that they are on route for supplies as a general warning to stay the fuck out of their way. They will fire fist and ask later. And they strike with absolute prejudice.
Sadists - You ever hear of Wendigos? Traders and travellers in the days before north america was paved ... they would get lost in winter, be forced to eat their fellow travellers to stay alive. Maybe its the radiation or these crazy anomalies everyone talks about that just does that to some people, makes them crazy, gets into their heads ... makes them think they're the fire. I'm not saying they eat people, but they live for cruelty ... and some of them eat people.

There's also one more Thing you want to take into account out here, and thats the weather, and we don''t mean your everyday average weather. We mean the kind of anomaly that seems to wait for you to arrive and then hunt you down. Now of course it doesn't have a conciousness. Its not really hunting. But it sure seems hungry and intent on killing .
These can manifest as electrical storms, flash floods , fire spewing geysers. And every travellers favourite flavoured tornados. Sometimes they just your standard wind type, but sometimes they come in electrical, fire or pure radiation. Either way find cover stay low and wait it out.
certain areas are prone to peculiarities that practiced travellers know what to look for, or perhaps listen out for . you learn it as you go...well you do if you survive...
