Name: Rugo Sathis, Rook
Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 32
Race: Half-Shade, Half-Human
Sexuality: Demi-sexual, Switch/Verse
Appearance: 6'2, athletic and lean with broad shoulders; Rugo cuts an imposing silhouette. He is built for close-quarters combat, a swift and brutal duelist. During his military career, Rugo sustained injuries from a hail of arrows that nearly ended his life. The most visible of this scarring is an entry wound that broke his right cheekbone, which exited just above his left jaw. It does little to soften his grim countenance. His skin is pale white, and like the point of his ears, a nod to his Shade ancestry. A strong brow frames his tired eyes, the blue-gray of a sparkless moonstone. Rugo wears his dark, wavy hair pulled back into a disheveled bun, and maintains a perpetual human-pattern stubble. A shock of white streaks from his left temple, another trauma from all the years spent at war. When he is not on duty, he prefers a simple tunic, breeches, and a pair of comfortable old leather boots. His uniform consists of the standard Ailan mithral half-plate and chainmail issued to the Royal Guard. He carries his own blade, an Elvish longsword with a black raven hilt that he inherited from his mother, and a dagger in his boot.
Personality: Stoic, Honest, Critical; Rugo projects a "what you see is what you get" persona hallmarked by brutal, often tactless honesty and the emotional intelligence of a brick. It is supported by his skill as a soldier and his seemingly unwavering loyalty to the crown, and to his charge, Princess Sylwen. Despite playing the perfect minority, in truth, Rugo is exactly what those who fear the empire believe of Shades. A born liar with a silver tongue, Rugo knows how to manipulate others with a moment of surprising insight or an honest talk through the character he has carefully crafted. He is observant and a good listener, endearing traits for an enemy spy. His true loyalty is to the Ysaerith Empire and his mission: protect Princess Sylwen and prevent her from marrying until the Dead Prince extends his offer. Getting close to Princess Sylwen is a means to an end, of course, and his subtle flirtation - a contingent plan to distract her from suitors. Nothing else, he so often tells himself.
Background: Rugo entered the Kingdom of Ailan as a member of the Band of Ash, a mercenary company contracted to bolster Ailan's forces on the eastern front. At the end of his short contract, he left the Band of Ash. His forged papers identified him as an immigrant from Echontis, and greasing palms expedited the process of granting him legal status as a citizen of Ailan. Rugo applied to serve in the Royal Guard and ranked in the top five among the recruits. He excelled at training and graduated early, out of respect for his prior experience and martial prowess. His assignment to Princess Sylwen was no accident, as another Ysaerith operative altered the documents in the Captain's office to secure Rugo's position. Since then, he has served as the princess's personal guard and carried out his mission dutifully.
This is the full history of Rugo Sathis, an alias invented for Rook, an operative of the Eyes of Ysaer.
Rook has served nearly ten years as an Eye operative. He has held many identities during his time uncover as a saboteur. He consented to the initiation ritual altering his memory to erase all memories that preceded his service to the empire. All record of his former identity was scrubbed from official records.
Before his transition to espionage, Rook served four years in the Imperial Army continuing the legacy of his mother, Wreoya Xumas. While his mother was often deployed, he was raised alone by his father, Brom Drritsk, a human man his mother claimed in the Raid of Icar. As a child, he didn't understand the true nature of his parent's relationship or why his father always seemed so distant and despondent. His upbringing was otherwise quite normal by Ysaerith standards.
Magic Abilities: Rook inherited his mother's inherent ability to shadowwalk, a skill he mastered during his training as an Eye. For a short time, he can teleport between shadows in eyesight.
