Rahma Ziryab
she/they
20 years old
Merchant's daughter of Espanya
Bordered by the Sierra Ventossa to the left, and the ocean everywhere else, Espanya can sometimes feel like an island community, with so many close-knit communities and little travel before they were unified into Europa. They have a strong naval presence and their boats go just about everywhere on the eastern coast of Europa. These ships are owned mostly by merchant families. These merchants make up the majority of the wealthy upper class and have political sway. They tend to own most property and businesses in Espanya.
The most powerful family is the Ziryab family, who own the rights to the contract with the royal family and own the most property. They don't have many ships, as they do most trading over land, and they are based in the capital, Almería. They have three daughters, the eldest, Rahma (she/they) is potentially an heir to the family estate, although her parents seem to favor their youngest, Bahseer (he/him). The middle child, Abdeebah (they/them) is proving to be a worthy merchant in their own rights and is doing their best to make a name for themselves out of their family's shadow. Rahma has recently been married off to the Princess Grazyna of Polenia in order to secure her family's ties to the king.
Rahma grew up the eldest of three in one of the most beautiful homes with the most influential families in the entire region of Espanya. She was treated like royalty and was expected to contribute to the family business. They learned the art of spying from their mother, how to look ordinary and be overlooked and unnoticed. Her aunts taught her how to write in shorthand and code, how to read faces, how to hide her emotions, and how to dress. Their father taught them how to command respect quietly and firmly, and to never back down. However, after her brother, Bahseer was born, the adult members of her family mostly stopped paying much attention to her.
She still loves her siblings and feels her truest self with them. They don't feel any boundaries are between them and tends to be more snarky and genuine around them. Around her friends, Rahma can be bitingly snarky, and she has a very dry wit. She finds the humor in silences and long expressive looks. However, she doesn't make friends easily, and it takes her a long time to warm up. They don't tend to seek out companionship, and they don't like to be vulnerable with people. It takes a lot to get her open up to people, and at the moment only her siblings know her less frosty side.
Rahma is a quiet and reserved character who thinks too much and has a lot of emotions but doesn't always know how to express them. This makes them seem frosty and mysterious. They are intelligent and politically savvy. While not a strategist or a bookworm, Rahma comfortably understands people and uses that to her advantage. She is very proper and calm but is used to being put in leadership positions. She prefers not to yell her point, but to patiently wait her turn. That doesn't make her a pushover, however, and people who don't let her get her say in tend not to hang around for too long. Rahma has a weight to their voice and commands respect by assuming respect.
They are very attached to their culture and believe earnestly in magic and magical practices. They keep a deck of oracle cards on them at all times and use them to help meditate and guide their decisions. They prefer to follow the rules and have a sometimes naive trust in authority. Rahma is very sheltered and a bit arrogant, she believes currently that the way things are is good and just. However, she does have a wish to be seen as good, and earnestly want things to be the best for people.
