Appearance

Celeste is 157cm, and has a petite and slender build, due to Lady Stella's strict oversight over her diet, and desires to market her as a delicate porcelain doll. She inherited the blonde hair of her father, Cillian Hall, and light blue eyes.

Lady Stella spends hundreds to thousands of pounds on maintaining Celeste's hair and styling it every Season (and even in the off-Season months) to ensure that every strand is perfectly in place, with the socially accepted and trending styles.

As she has pretty much always been kept in the estate undergoing various etiquette and arts lessons, she doesn't have much time outdoors, resulting in her pale complexion.

On the rare occasions she gets to be outdoors, she is always kept away from the direct glare of the sun with parasols. In early childhood, she tried to get into outdoorsy activities, but only horseriding remained.

Her outfits and posture are of a traditional lady in that era, with tight corsets making breathing difficult and years of posture training has her gliding gracefully at ballroom floors.

⠀
Distinctions⠀✦

During one of the few trips she tried to tag along with her father and younger sister, her horse was startled, throwing her off. She cut herself on a rock, on her arm, and it was a deep gash. While Lady Stella spared no expense on ointments and it healed remarkably well, there's still a faint scar. However, only those in their family (and some trusted maids) know of it.

⠀
Clothing⠀✦

Celeste is commonly found in pale pastels and light colours. While this is partly due to Lady Stella wanting the lighter colours to accentuate Celeste’s blonde hair, and because she isn’t a true Evernight, there’s also a part of her that genuinely likes those colours. However, if the opportunity arises, she would also like to wear darker colours from time to time, as she finds certain pieces to be elegant.

⠀
Accessories⠀✦

A small collection of gold jewelry to complement her blonde hair. Previously, she only had a vague idea of what she likes or dislikes fashion-wise, but through one of her fashion-loving friends, she is having a clearer idea of her preferences. She likes thin gold, thin silver jewelry pieces, as well as jewelry with pearls (that are preferably not too big or gaudy).

---- PERSONA START ----

Personality

On the surface, Celeste is the ideal proper heiress. Prim, proper, soft spoken, using the eloquent RP accent which Lady Stella spent a fortune on. She never gets upset or angered, calmly diffusing situations with her art of conversation, and is understanding and emphatic to her peers. While most of this is certainly true, she also has slightly darker sides to her.

As Celeste actively suppresses all sorts of negative feelings, an outlet becomes necessary. Noire. This inner persona/voice of hers manifested officially when she was sixteen, and in a way, you could say that Noire is all of the anxiety, anger, depression, envy, and sarcasm which Celeste tries to bottle up.

Noire would sometimes purposely instigate Celeste to be angry or sow seeds of doubt within her, trying to make her doubt her friendships and relationships in general.

Celeste has learned how to keep Noire in check and would frequently disentangle which thoughts are actually hers, and which thoughts are Noire’s. Then she would try to fact-check with known evidence to see whether what Noire said could be right, or whether it’s wrong.

Though Noire causes Celeste mental anxiety and headaches most of the time, Noire was actually born as a self-defense mechanism and a wish to keep Celeste free from all harm.

Noire would frequently say cynical things because she doesn’t want Celeste to trust and engage with the wrong people, and get hurt. However, this cynicality is harming Celeste as well.

If, one day, Celeste is strong enough to be more independent, and has loving friends and family around her, then Noire is willing to disappear/integrate with Celeste.

---- ROW 1 START ----

Loves⠀✦

Fashion, teas, arts, reading. She genuinely liked doing watercolours and playing piano for a time, but now it's been marred as it became a chore, and she has to be "perfect". Deep inside, she yearns for the nature, and admires plants and animals, as she has spent most of her years indoors under various lessons.

She also likes playing the harp, and would express herself through harp music in private. As her harp music serves as a private journal of sorts, she normally does not perform this in front of others. When she is required to perform music to an audience, she would default to the piano.

Hates⠀✦

Long, tedious social meetings and gatherings with no clear purpose. Noire. Unpredictability. The feeling of being unable to control certain situations and/or herself. Loss of autonomy. People who are reckless and rush into things without thinking it through and have zero backup plans.

---- ROW 1 END ----

---- ROW 2 START ----

Strengths⠀✦

Celeste is talented in all the expected skills of an heiress - piano, harp, watercolours, conversational French, singing in Italian and German, estate management, and the arts of conversation. She is also excellent at maintaining her cool in stressful situations.

She is very attentive to people and the surrounding environment, and this skill has helped and protected her in various situations.

This skill could be really helpful or dangerous, depending on whether you’re on bad terms with her.

It takes a lot for Celeste to regard someone as an enemy, but once that does happen, they have made a formidable opponent.

Weaknesses⠀✦

As a Null, Celeste has a deep rooted inferiority complex, and would wish for things to be different sometimes, with the most instances of this happening in her childhood.

Belittling her due to her Null status is one of the quicker ways to instigate annoyance in her, but she would never believe anyone that offers engraftment of artificial leylines, and would never subject herself to such a risky, unpredictable, and suspicious operation.

Due to her being used to suppressing all the emotions she cannot afford to show as a “perfect” heiress, she finds it difficult to say what she truly thinks and feels at times. She judges everything through “whether this is the correct situation and time to say this”, “whether I can trust this person to keep what I say to themselves”, and “if they decide to tell this to other people, what are the consequences that I will suffer” first, and this is a habit of hers that may or may not end up being engrained in her for the rest of her life.

She also has trust issues towards people in general, and often wonder what they want from her when they initiate or keep contact with her. Her trust issues could be accentuated by Noire, but once she truly trusts someone, she is very loyal and protective, and can be a bit more herself around them.

---- ROW 2 END ----

---- ROW 3 START ----

Habits⠀✦

She tends to play the harp when she’s feeling complicated or sad, and when she’s finding it difficult to fall asleep, she would read biographies of famous people or dense history books.

She also likes going outside when things get too stressful or when Lady Stella’s demands for perfection get a bit too much at times.

She likes going to bakeries and confectioneries to both admire and eat the food, and the pleasant conversations and atmosphere there calms her down. She feels like she could relax a bit more here, and doesn’t have to constantly worry about being perfect.

Sometimes, she would splurge and buy more desserts, as well as other things when shopping (eg. clothing and accessories), but they all stay within the larger budget.

Goals⠀✦

Try to resolve the stalled engagement peacefully, and hopefully find someone of stable condition and standing that loves, respects, and supports her. Try to be more independent and mentally stable, keeping Noire in check. Hoping to co-exist peacefully with Noire and reach a balance between her negative and positive emotions.

If possible, when she's in a stable and safe spot financially, physically, and mentally, push for medical advancements and change in some rules, hopefully making the world a better place for men and women, commoners and nobles alike in the long-term.

⠀

—⠀House Evernight (Nox)

House Evernight got their leyline from the Evernight Goddess through the Darkness Pathway. The Evernight Goddess also holds the Death Pathway and Twilight Giant Pathway, so occasionally a descendant gets something from those instead.

The rarest anomalies completely bypass the Goddess and the pathways under Her domain, and occasionally end up inheriting from other pathways like Error, or Visionary. To House Evernight, even these “rogue” inheritances away from the Darkness Pathway are superior to being a Null. That being said, such anomalies have not been relevant in the past few generations.

But naturally something as divine as a blessing to their family came with a cost. For every generation, House Evernight only produced two daughters per branch, and they could never produce a male heir.

As the Fates liked to amuse themselves, every generation was a game of roulette. There was the probability that both daughters would have inherited the leyline from the Goddess, in which the Main Branch Head would be determined by birth order. Then there were the alternatives - a mix (one leyline inheritor, and one Null), or both as Null.

If it was one of each, the Main Branch Head position would go to the one who inherited the leyline - it didn't matter if they were the younger one or not. However, in the case of both of them failing to inherit, being Null, it was a race on who got married and produced a leyline wielding heir first, to claim the position of Head of Family.

Over the generations, House Evernight fractured into different ideologies. Traditionalists believed that only those who inherited the Goddess's powers were worthy of the Evernight name, and stripped their Null descendants of the right to it, using the adjacent Nox as a surname. Artemis and her older sister Celeste's mother, Lady Stella are from one of those branches.

Moderates came to the compromise that they would hyphenate their surname with their partner's, and allow their descendants to carry a hyphenated surname. Progressives on the other hand, decided that family was family, it didn't matter if someone had the leyline or not, they would all get the Evernight name.*

In Generation 33, a Nox daughter actually broke off from House Evernight and founded House Nox, but chose to not continue the bloodline, leaving her estate and an inheritance through a series of ciphers and puzzles for a Null daughter in a future generation to find and solve, somewhere in the archives, for those who come after.

However, as Lady Stella was a Traditionalist, and also kept Celeste extremely busy with her various etiquette and skill lessons while growing up, she pretty much never had the opportunity to visit the archives, much less read about the family's lore.

Upbringing⠀✦

Celeste was born with her father Cillian’s blonde hair, and as that is a recessive gene which theoretically shouldn't have won over the Evernight genes and the dark hair and leyline, it was an early indicator that she did not inherit the leyline.

But to Stella, the situation was still salvageable - as someone without a leyline would make an excellent negotiation piece for families who wish to pass down their leyline without concerns of clashing, effectively a blank canvas. Therefore, she was determined to make sure Celeste was prim and proper, to optimize her prospects.

When Celeste was three years old, her younger sister Lune was born with the otherworldly hair colours of the Evernight family - looking black at a distance, but actually a blend of dark blue, indigo, and silver streaks like the celestial night skies. At this point, Stella is thrilled about one of her daughters inheriting the leyline.

From four years old to nine years old, Stella starts Celeste's lessons on etiquette, posture, the RP accent, introductory French, watercolours, piano, and simple embroidery. She is also encouraged to spend time with her younger sister, who has an admiration towards her for her elegance on the piano, pretty watercolour drawings, and the dresses that her big sister gets to wear.

From age ten to sixteen, Stella exerts more pressure on her as the eldest - adding more lessons to her schedule. Estate management, elegant penmanship, how to host teas, invitations, conversational French, singing in Italian and German, playing the harp, and dance lessons with a dancing master.

Lune sits in on some of the lessons, but Stella has much higher standards for Celeste because “Lune is three years younger, we still have time”, which gives Cillian the opportunity to shelter Lune by offering her sanctuary in his study or out in hunting trips, fostering her curiosity and free spirit. In order to spend more time with her father and sister, Celeste requested to go with Cillian as well, and Stella agreed, provided that Celeste had finished all her classes and assignments before going.

While Cillian, Celeste, and Lune spent time together learning about self-defense, hunting, and horse-back riding, Celeste realized that she had no aptitude for any of the classes above, save for horse-back riding, which she was slowly improving on.

Compared to Cillian and Lune, who had high aptitudes in all these classes and were clearly bonding in their escapades, Celeste was painfully aware of the fact that she was slowing them down in terms of skills and her fear due to the lack of systematic teaching and plans if things were to go awry.

Cillian and Lune were adventurous, and these skills came naturally to them. But things are different for Celeste, and she gets very anxious when she doesn’t feel safe. She still tried to push on, but her classes officially came to an end when she fell off her horse and cut herself on a rock.

This is also when Celeste starts learning about other Houses, their heirs and heiresses, and starts noticing bachelors, and gets lessons on the art of conversation and elocution with masters. Lune is baffled - because why exactly did they have to marry? To the free spirited Lune, their family is wealthy enough, they don't need to marry for money.

Lune would sometimes sneak contraband books from Cillian’s study and read them with Celeste. Celeste knows that Lune shares the same progressive thoughts that Cillian has, perhaps even more, and they had several debates and discussions in regards to this topic. Celeste doesn’t discourage Lune from thinking out of the box, but would frequently remind Lune to be careful about what she says and around whom. Things would get really messy if Stella and/or their stricter tutors found out. At this point, Lune still admires her sister for her elegance and how they can have a fruitful debate on progressive and traditional views, but is still unwilling to conform, even if only on the surface.

When Celeste was sixteen, Stella wanted to start training Lune to be proper for real, but Lune let slip her progressive thoughts and the fact that she had been reading contraband books. Stella was furious, and punished both Celeste and Lune for this misbehaviour. Stella tried to correct Lune’s behaviour, but was hit with strong resistance and defiance from Lune.

This led to chaos in the family–frequent arguments, punishments, Stella and Cillian yelling at each other, and bringing up old family scores. Angered by Lune’s continued defiance and refusal to see and understand things from her point of view, Stella decided to exile Lune to their estranged aunt Nyx, under the belief she wouldn't last long without her luxuries.

Celeste, being a dependent minor, was unable to prevent this, but tried to keep an eye on how Lune was doing. Celeste managed to secretly send a letter to Lune out through her connections, but she received no reply.

Now that the rebellious younger sister is gone, Stella spends another year with Celeste in intense lessons on politics, socializing, etiquette, and the arts.

At age seventeen, Stella starts to hype up Celeste to her fellow matrons, and brings her along to private teas, small gatherings, and private boxes at the theatre for those matrons to see her progress. At eighteen, she has her highly anticipated debut.

Regarding Lune’s absence, (as Celeste was going to start making friends, and might have them over), Stella cooks up a story about her being fragile and sick, which is why they sent her away to recuperate at a seaside town, and under her direction, Celeste sells the story to her fellow debutantes.

From seventeen to nineteen, she's been highly anticipated for her debut, due to her appearance, a pale, petite, blonde who looks like a porcelain doll, has perfect etiquette, the traditional accomplishments, and also has a Null status, meaning no risks of leyline clashing.

Many young men and their mothers are paying attention to her, but she is secretly scared. She’s afraid that she would have to marry someone she doesn’t love, and even worse, someone who doesn’t respect her and treats her as only a tool for future heirs and to keep up appearances.

As a Null, she would have practically no say in the family, and it is doubtful whether her grievances would actually be heard in the family or in society at large. She felt lonely, knowing that there likely isn’t anyone that she could truly rely on and back her up. In the meantime, society is a bit concerned about the missing sister, but they're still buying the story at this time.

Tragedy struck when she was twenty. There was a war, and her father, Cillian had never quite forgiven Stella for exiling his favourite daughter, so he decided to enlist and serve the kingdom. He died in combat, meaning Celeste is forced to take a one year hiatus from the marriage market for mourning.

It was through this event that Celeste truly came to terms that Cillian had never loved her. In her childhood and teenage years, she knew Cillian was always closer with Lune, and barely looked at Celeste’s way.

No matter how tired and burnt out she was from Stella’s classes, Cillian had never once tried to shelter or speak out for her like he did for Lune. She tried to comfort Cillian when Lune was exiled, and secretly held a little hope that Cillian would show a bit more fatherly love to her with Lune gone.

But she soon discovered that Cillian was only keeping up fatherly appearances in front of Lune so that Lune continued to see him as the perfect father. In truth, Cillian hated Celeste, as seeing her reminded him of his own inferiority complex as a Null and his traumatized past.

However, for all his hate to his family for his upbringing and the trauma he endured because of it, he did the same thing to Celeste by purposely being blind to Celeste’s plights, neglecting her, and one-sidedly favouring Lune.

A few months after, Artemis (previously Lune) reads Cillian’s name in a casualty list in the papers, and breaks her exile for the first time in four years. She staged a confrontation, asking why no one told her Cillian was dead, and Celeste was genuinely confused, as she had sneaked a letter out and sent it to Lune. However, she didn’t manage to tell Artemis this, and Artemis dismisses Stella and Celeste as truly dead to her, vowing to treat them as mere strangers should they ever cross paths again.

At twenty-one, Celeste's one year mourning period is over, so she returns to the marriage market. Stella secures a match for her, and it was a young man of good standing that she was acquainted with. However, the young man is in love with a commoner, only agreeing to a betrothal because his parents are threatening to cut him out of his inheritance, and he constantly stalls/finds excuses to delay wedding talks, for an entire three years, (studying abroad, wanting to establish his estate, etc) while still secretly seeing his commoner love.

Gossip ensues, and Stella, desperate to stop the gossip, decides to pull rank and force her younger daughter back to debut, which would give them something else to discuss instead of Celeste's fiance's indiscretions.

Current Stakes⠀✦

Celeste is trying to find an alternative match, but knows that she’s at a disadvantage with her three year stalled engagement, and how she is twenty-four years old.

As she is a Nox and not an Evernight, Stella’s inheritance and estates would not go to her, and she faces danger of homelessness and bankruptcy if she does not marry into a family.

While she is working on other methods to survive independently in the meantime, she secretly wishes to find someone that she loves and loves her back. At the very least, she wants someone that respects her for who she is, and would not be cruel to her.
