I love telling this story! So thanks for asking!
Once upon a time there lived an old couple in a cottage deep in the woods. There were no neighbors for miles and the old couple had been married many years. One day a mischievous fairy was wandering by, very bored. The fairy decided to peek into the cottage and saw the old coupe inside, sitting by the fire. The old man was resting and thinking. The old woman was mending some clothes.
The silly fairy decided to have some fun, so with some magic he made the old woman feel very frustrated. The old woman started nagging the old man about how he cared for his clothes. The old man started to argue back about how he worked hard to give the old woman her food and comforts. Soon the old couple were shouting at each other.
To the old man's surprise the old woman stormed out and started down the path towards town. The fairy was laughing at his fine joke until he saw the old man's face. The old man was heart broken and sat back down. He sat in stunned silence for quite awhile before finally getting up to go after the old woman.
The fairy watched and looked ahead. The old woman was out of sight. As the old man started down the path, the fairy flew ahead to find the old woman had a great head start on the old man. The old woman was still angry and crying from heartbreak as she left her husband. The fairy felt guilt run through him. His joke had been mean, not fun. And the fairy realized that the old man would not catch up to the old woman without help.
So to help stop the old woman, the fairy made bushes of blackberries grow. The old woman did not notice, she was so angry. So the fairy thought, and then he made bushes of blueberries grow. Still the old woman was too angry to notice. And the old man was still too far behind to catch his wife. So in a last chance effort, the fairy created a new berry. A berry in the shape of a heart, red as a heart, and tasted as sweet and sour as true love.
As soon as this new berry grew around the old woman, she stopped and stared in awe at the shiny red fruit. She could not help but start to pick the berries and put them in her apron. Which gave the old man his chance to catch up. The old man also was enamored with the fruit and he helped his wife pick and carry them. When they could carry no more they walked home together, neither able to remember why they fought in the first place.
