His powers revolve around the powerful and large Greatsword he wields. Created when Tommy made contact with a strange alien magical artefact that reacted to something within Tommy to form a large sword for him to wield. This process was a two-way transformation as Tommy was imbued with the same cosmic energies and it empowered him in a few useful ways.

His altered physiology has improved his muscles to grant him the power to lift well over fifteen tons and punch things really hard. When you’re waving around a large and heavy blade this is a very useful ability, which is why he can wield a weapon that others require two hands with only one. His enhanced leg muscles help him maintain balance with his large blade and gives him the incredible power to jump higher than most. It comes in handy more often than you’d think.

The Greatsword is a large straight-bladed, double-edged sword made from an alien glowing teal metal that appears to be extremely durable. It has a mental connection to Tommy that allows him to summon the blade to his hand provided he has the mental strength to do so. It comes with a nifty non-lethal attack in the form of a concussive wave of energy that emanates from the sharp edges of the blade at Tommy’s command.

(Note, I may add to this. Not to make it too overpowered, but since coming up with this character, I've thought of bunch of cool stuff I'd like to write him doing.)

Quick overview

A life-long fan of a British superhero team, thanks to a magic great-sword, he fulfilled his life-long ambition to join them and discovered their corruption. After having exposed his former employers for their failings, he comes to America to make a fresh start as the Knight Errant.

Background

it all started when...

Thomas Maddox, or Tommy, had always wanted to join the Royal Knight Corp. They were Great Britain’s official superhero team. He had always been a fan, but his world centred around them on his tenth birthday. He’d been in London during the Great Insanity Riot caused by the supervillain Mr Punch. After his father was caught under the influence of Mr Punch’s power and joined the riot, Tommy wandered around the city looking for him, instead, he found the supervillain of the hour. Needing to beat one child to death to complete a ritual, Mr Punch thought Tommy would make adequate practice but before he strike down the child, the blow was blocked by the arrival of the Lord Knight. Tommy watched as the Knights fought and defeated Mr Punch and ended the riots.

In the aftermath, Tommy grew obsessed with them. They become something of a comfort, especially after his parent’s marriage fell apart. He wasn’t sure when it became his goal but at some point, he made it his life goal to join their ranks and become one of the Royal Knights. No one took him seriously when he mentioned it though. They thought it was just the fantasies of a child with an overactive imagination. They thought he’d grow out of it and get a job in construction or plumbing, like a proper trade. That was everyone except one person.

Grant was his mother’s uncle who lived on a farm on the outskirts of town. He saw in Tommy’s eyes the conviction that everyone else mistook for childish arrogance. In Tommy, he saw goodness and bravery that, if fostered, could form the foundations of a great man. He believed that determination and worthiness would make him the perfect Knight. And he should know, he had been one of them as a younger man.

This fact blew young Tommy’s mind, and he was delighted when Grant told him he planned on training him to help him achieve his life’s goal, so for the next couple of years after school, Tommy would attend come to his farm to do his homework and train. Though his mother was unaware of what they were doing, she was happy for the help looking after her son after his father moved back to London with his younger girlfriend. Training took the form of being taught sword fighting, beating obstacle courses and helping around the farm. It was unconventional, but it helped Tommy become a fit and strong lad. The training ended when he was fifteen and taught him he had all he had to offer. Plus a recent stroke meant he had to take it easier and felt that the pair of them deserves to relax a little, especially before Tommy can qualify for the Knights proper.

It took some years before they accepted him for recruitment. In the meantime, he moved to London and became a Fire Fighter. After several years and some lobbying on his behalf from Grant but he was approved for their initiation process. The process came in three parts. The first was a physical test which Tommy flew through on a rocket surfboard (should go without saying not literally, but this a weird world they live in). The second involved written tests, something he only just scraped by on.

And the third involved interacting with the Albion Artefacts. It was from these magical objects the Knights of the RKC gained their powers. They were empowered and channelled for great magic that bonded with the user’s soul and enthused them with the magic they drew from the universe around them. From the name and the structure of the knights (and due to heavy hinting from the British government) one would think the artefacts are related to Merlin and legend of Camelot, but truth is they come from a race of space gods the British government accidentally made contact with in the 1960s.

This was considered the most important of the tasks and even to this day, no one is sure why what happened next happened. Grant believed it was due to Tommy’s own kind nature, whilst the boffins working for the Knight Program believed Tommy may have had fae/alien ancestry, but the moment he touched his artefact, it responded more strongly than any before. A white light engulfed the training complex and the artefact, a small normal-enough sword, transformed into a large Greatsword. The bonding process was usually a long and exhausting process that was supposed to take place over a series of weeks, but for Tommy, it happened there on the spot as the weapons immediately latched onto him. The RKC really had little choice but to accept Tommy into their ranks, after all, he already had their powers, it would have been foolish not to welcome him aboard.

He had achieved his dream and for a while it was great. He was officially a superhero and it was everything he ever wanted. He got to defend his home and enjoy the sense of comradery with his fellow Knights. He helped fight off a giant invasion, lead the charge against the tin soldiers of Doctor Imperial and proved to be the perfect distraction whilst the team leader snuck around to defeat the supervillain with little resistance, proved invaluable against rebellion in the alternate universe invasion from the HuMechs and even got his own back against Mr Punch he tried to spark the Second Great Insanity Riot.

But all good things must come to an end and the end began with a fight against the Church of Rust. Tommy received evidence from an anonymous fan that a fellow knight had killed an innocent man he believed was having an affair with his wife. Tommy grew angry when the team commander refused to the Knight. He tried to complain to the higher-ups, but they proved uninterested in dealing with this matter. They knew the UK government was looking to cut their budget to save money and feared this kind of bad press would give them the confidence to do so. Instead, they did something much worse. They framed the dead man as a cultist and ruined the lives of his family to protect his own.

Tommy, disgusted with what happened, decided to go to the press but was unaware he was being monitored by the RKC. On the way to meet with a journalist friend of his, he was ambushed by his fellow Knights on the motorway, though they were no Knights he’d seen before. The fight between them was brutal but he survived and fought off the attack. He learned that the RKC had framed him as being a disciple of Mr Punch who had actually killed the innocent in the raid and tried to frame the man himself. Now on the run for crimes he didn’t commit, he went underground and hid for a couple of months, trying to find a way to clear his name. His own ally was Grant who used up his remaining contacts and favours to help Tommy stay hidden, but it was during this time Grant died from a stroke. Tommy was completely alone.

With little to lose, he planned on raiding the RKC’s headquarters and hoped on finding exonerating evidence there, however, he was forced to reveal himself before he could do that. Days before his planned attack, the HuMechs returned in force and completely captured London. Most of the Royal Knights were defeated and civilians were beginning to be converted into HuMechs when Tommy attacked. Wielding his magic Greatsword, he liberated the first conversion camp and freed the imprisoned Knights, hoping their love of country would guide them into doing the right thing. He snuck and fought his way aboard the HuMech’s Mothership where he defeated the HuMech’s Machine Lord and used their command systems to force the invading cyborgs to return to their home reality.

In the aftermath, Tommy was a hero and the world was more willing to listen to his story. He exposed the RKC’s corruption and crimes. It was quite the scandal and the Prime Minister promised a full inquiry. Tommy was offered to return to the Corp and even a potential leadership position, but for Tommy the Royal Knight Corp had been ruined. Especially after further reports came out about other crimes that had been covered up, such as stealing from crime scenes and protection rackets. For Tommy, the RKC wasn’t something that could be salvaged and when it became clear the government weren’t willing to let go of it, he left.

Not just the Corp but the whole country. He travelled for a year, going across the world to meet new people and help out wherever he (and his magic greatsword) could help out. He met other heroes of different nationalities and learned a lot from them. Eventually, he settled in America, seeing a city that could use someone else like him, but by this point, he’d gained a new title. He was no longer the Greatsword Knight of the Royal Knight Corp, he was simply the Knight-Errant.

More to follow. Maybe.

Abilities

Expert Pilot. Comfortable with most ship-types, but is best in smaller ships such a fighter or bomber.

Appearence

To look at Ed, the most notable thing about him is clearly his handsome face. Blessed with good genetics, he helps with good exercise routines that helps him keep his athletic build, and good grooming routine that maintains a stubbled chin and combed back hair. Scars from his war service litter his body, but nothing stands out. His hair is black, which helps his strong eyebrows and stubble stand out. Otherwise he is a fairly normal looking and would pass for any of the humans he normally hangs around with if not for the blue skin that shows his Pantoran heritage.

Background

it all started when...

24 BBY-6 BBY
Ed Kul was born and raised in space. When he wasn’t living in a space station near a beautiful nebula, he was in one of several transportations ship owned and operated by his family. His mother was a transport pilot and his father a business manager. He spent most of his time being raised by his mother and learned how to pilot starships of all sizes from a very young age. It was hoped he’d follow in the family business, and Ed had no reservations. There was little more he enjoyed then piloting a starship, regardless of the size or its speed (though, of course, faster the better). Even his spare time was spent in amateur starship races. It wasn’t their fault fate had different intentions.

6 BBY- 3 BBY
Ed officially joins the family business and becomes the pilot of a civilian personnel transport that took people from the edges of the Mid Rim to the start of the Outer Rim. Pretty quiet job, except Imperial security starts to cause trouble with ever increasing security checks. Ed gains the ire of an imperial officer when he suspects Ed is sleeping with his wife. Ed is almost arrested and his family decide to change assign him a different route to let things cool down.

2 BBY
Ed is piloting a shuttle craft on a route through an asteroid field between a mining station and a local planet. Whilst refuelling on the planet, he is taken hostage by a group of desperate rebels fleeing ISB perusers. Using his shuttle, he is forced to take them off world and rendezvous with a ship in another system. Despite the circumstances, Ed liked some of the rebels. Enough of them were apologetic for what they had to do, and Ed sympathised enough with their cause that he didn’t hold it against them as much as someone else might.

Imperials pursued them with force, even when they threatened to kill their hostage (Ed). Ed was a skilled enough of a pilot to escape the tie fights and jump to hyperspace. They had almost made it safety, however when they arrived in the other system, they found the other rebel ship destroyed and a small imperial force waiting for them. The shuttle was attacked and disabled, with most of the rebels dying in the attack and Ed severely injured before being “rescued”.

1 BBY
After spending some time in hospital and being interrogated, Ed is designated a rebel sympathiser and sentenced a force labour camp. Whilst there, he is inspected and evaluated by a imperial physiatrist who believes his “rebel sympathies” are a mental illness caused by his “alien” mental physiology. During these sessions, he befriends a nurse and convinces her to provide him with contraband.

0 ABY
Ed works with a bunch of other prisoners to stage a prison riot and daring escape. Using a stolen imperial shuttle Ed, his nurse friend and a bunch of other prisoners are able to retreat to an abandoned Separatist base to lay low. After the heat dies down, the group decide to form a rebel cell to fight the Empire.

1 ABY
Ed and his group fight Imperial occupation of the galaxy as much as they can. Though their numbers start small, a few successful missions and recruitment drive helps bulk up numbers. During this time, Ed relearns how to fly fighter craft and becomes an expert starfighter. At the end of the year, his rebel cell is recruited to join the wider Rebel Alliance.

4 ABY
Takes part in the Battle of Endor. He never thought he was going to die like he did when that fight began, yet he survived. He often jokes how he felt the same way in the celebrations after the battle.

Sometime after the battle, Ed returns home for the first time in 6 years.

5 ABY
Unable to find peace at home, Ed returns to the New Republic and continues the fight against the Empire.

Abilities

Thanks to a special combination of a werewolves curse, Jonathan can turn into a large, muscular bipedal wolf-like creature. Thanks to mystical training and the magic of others, Jonathan has complete control over this transformation process. No longer dictated by the lunar process, nor does the wolf have to fight its way out of Jonathan’s body like before, Jonathan can transform at will by channelling the dark magic within. To the outsider, it looks like a sudden cloud of black smoke engulfing Jonathan before it disappears and leaves a werewolf in his place.

Being a werewolf holds many great advantages including:

  • The Superhuman Strength allows him to lift well over 30 tons and punch things hard.
  • A thick hide and werewolf skin grants him superhuman durability that helps him withstand freezing temperatures, gunfire, extreme heat and certain tight-dressed powerhouses.
  • His wolf-like biology enhances his senses to be more like a wolf’s. His superhuman vision isn’t letting him see across great distances anymore than your average human, but he can see part of the infrared spectrum to detect various heat signatures in the dark. His sense of smell can have him track senses across great distance and his wolf-like hearing is much greater than a human's upper limit. But as good and useful as this is, it poses its own risks. It makes him more vulnerable to blinding lights and deafening sounds, as well as weapons that use lights, smells and sounds.
  • Big wolf leg muscles help him run twice as fast as your average man and with enhanced speed comes great agility and reflexes as his mind has adapted to deal with his speed. His enhanced leg muscles and strong, juicy wolf-thighs also grant him the powerful ability of jumping good.
  • Big old teeth and claws let him bite and claw his way through the toughest materials, including wood, concrete and some metals. The claws and strength act as his primary weaponry.
  • The biggest drawback is a weakness to the metal silver and has the potential to kill him if he received a fatal wound. It's not helped that this is a fairly well-known weakness to werewolves so it's something he's got to look out for.
  • If you scratch him in the right spot behind his left ear, his left leg will twitch.

Appearence

There are two sides to Jonathan Shaw, his human form and his werewolf form.

The werewolf form is an imposing sight. Just over seven feet in height, he is what one might expect from a werewolf. His shape is that of a human as he stands on two legs and a muscular arm protrudes from each side of his well-built chest. That is where the similarities begin to veer off. The muscles on both the arms and legs are thicker than your average man, and that’s before you get to the black fur that covers his body. Long, sharp dog-like nails can be found at the end of any finger and toe. His neck leans forward and turns into a large wolf-like head, complete with visible sharp teeth. I say “wolf-like” as the face seems slightly more animated than your average human to allow for some human expression.

His human form is not an imposing sight. In fact, you’d probably not notice him in a crowd. He’s a white man with blue eyes with an unremarkable dress sense that mostly consists of cheap but professional shirts for work, and a plain t-shirt and shirt combo with jeans for casual wear, though he has splurged out on a nice dark-coloured jacket that he gets some mileage out of. Though he is tall, he’s just under six feet. He matches the dark black hair from his werewolf form, however, it's mostly found combed back on the top of his head (with shorter hair on the sides of his head), and within his medium-length beard.

Background

it all started when...

Jonathan was at his lowest point when the mysterious Sir Marrok entered his life. You see, Jonathan had been cursed to be a werewolf after a brutal attack on a camping trip in Scotland at a young age that put him in the hospital and left his parents dead. After that, he’d been raised by his grandparents, but they were old and unprepared. As loving as they were, they weren’t fit to raise a boy with the baggage Jonathan came with. He’d discovered he was a werewolf after a spell of sleepwalking coincided with animal mutilations in the area. It turns out, he was turning into a big old wolf and eating them.

Up until he met Sir Marrok, the fear of his wolf self hurting another human being dominated his life. He gave up on college and higher education in favour of moving somewhere remote. He never got close to anyone out of fear of hurting them. He believed himself to be a walking time bomb and had no idea what to do about it. It took a few years of isolation before it became too much for him and he looked for answers on the internet. That turned out to be a big mistake.

Hunters who sought prey like himself had set traps on the internet had set traps to alert them when someone like him was asking questions like the one he was. They investigated further, confirmed he was a werewolf and captured Jonathan. They planned to wait for him to transform at the next full moon where they would kill and skin him, yet something happened. A younger and more sadistic member of the hunting group began terrorising his captured prey and somehow triggered the transformation.

The hunters were caught unaware and were slaughtered. After being careful for so long, all his work was undone and he was now a killer. He ran back to his home and returned to his isolation, but things had changed now. The beast began hurting more animals than before. He'd been going further, and he felt the beast's influence on him during the day. His attempts to cage the beast failed miserably and Jonathan left like he was running out of options.

A year later another group of hunters attacked him. This time they weren't messing around. These were not like the first group. They were not sadistic trophy hunters; they were religious purifiers who saw Jonathan as an abomination that needed killing. Jonathan did not disagree with them and at this point would have surrendered to them had an offer been given. They came in force and attacked the house, but before they could kill Jonathan something intervened.

It was a werewolf, not unlike the beast Jonathan turned into. It was cleaner and more controlled. This was not a wild beast but a creature in full command of itself. He dispatched the hunters were ease before turning into a simple man as if it were some simple feat because to him it was. He introduced himself to the stunned Jonathan as Sir Marrok, a werewolf-like himself but one who’d learned to control his werewolf side and he could bring Jonathan to someone who could teach him to do the same. Unsurprisingly, Jonathan agreed to this and soon they were off.

Aside from the business with the hunters, Jonathan had never been out of the county since his parent's died, but Marrok took him out of England and into the heart of Eastern Europe, to a monastery in the hills of someplace Jonathan had never heard of, and according to google should not exist. Inside this monastery was only one man, though in truth he was more than a man. A shapeshifting being of great power and wisdom, but dedicated to peace and order. He claimed to be a god of old, and the father of shapeshifters, but he’d thrown that all aside to help people like Marrok and Jonathan. He was simply called the Mentor.

Jonathan spent the next several years under the guise of the Mentor. At first, he was studied and examined. It was discovered that he was not only a werewolf but the host of the spirit of the Great Wolf Fenrir. It was hard to say what this meant other than it was probably why he transformed outside of the lunar cycle without help. After the studying was as complete as needed, they worked on Jonathan learning to control the beast within. This was not an easy process. It involved spells, meditations, and trips into his very mind and soul. It was not something Jonathan would wish on anyone….

Yet in the end, progress was made and Jonathan emerged from his time with the mentor a changed man. Thanks to a ritual and a lot of meditation, the beast and the man merged into something new. Something that was Still Jonathan Knight, but with some added bite. He had confidence that he didn't have before. It was helped that he could now control his werewolf form and transform at will, just like Marrok. When he was ready to say goodbye, he left the Mentor and headed back to England…

However, before he could get home he was intercepted by Marrok. It seemed the hunters had stepped up their game and somehow learned Jonathan was going home. At first, Jonathan didn't care. He wanted to go home and was all too happy to fight the hunters, but Marrok explained they’d become more powerful lately. They had somewhere acquired great resources and used them to make powerful friends in England. Should he return, Jonathan would no doubt find the whole country turned again him.

Marrok convinced Jonathan to follow him to America and set him up with a new home. For the first time, Jonathan was able to come out of his shell a little and make friends. He was no longer afraid of himself and it felt great, if a bit strange. Things didn't stay quiet for long as one random night, a supervillain called Professor Screams began attacking his neighbourhood. Jonathan wasn’t sure what possessed him to transform into his werewolf form to fight this madman but fight him he did. It was a quick battle that ended with a single punch but before he could escape, a photo was taken of him and questions began to be asked.

Jonathan expected Marrok to be furious but his friend understood. He claimed he understood the call to adventure and the desire to help others, and if he should feel the need to do so again, he should feel free to do so. It was then the Mentor approached Jonathan and taught him about a mythical werewolf figure known as the Dire Wolf. It was said that since prehistoric times, there have been werewolves who like him had mastered the creature within and used it to defend the innocence of their world. It was a mantle carried down through the ages, through the various types and species of Werewolf, even Sir Marrok had held the title once upon a time before passing it onto another. The last Dire Wolf had died under mysterious circumstances and now the mantle went unused.

As the self-proclaimed Father of the Shapeshifters, the Mentor had the power and privilege to bestow any worthy werewolf the name of Dire Wolf should he want it. He gave it some consideration before accepting. After feeling he’d wasted so much of his life trapped, he found the call to adventure and helping people impossible to ignore. After all, becoming a well-liked superhero could generate some good PR to use against any hunter enemies coming for him. And so began the adventures of Jonathan Shaw, the Dire Wolf!!
