"Can ya tell me why I'm the one doing all the prep for my birthday, Saldis?" The tanned young lady complained, as she paused in hanging the yellow string lights.
"Sue, Sue, Sue,"
"Sunny." She hisses.
"Honey~, I'm your mom's vampiric thrawl, not yours~." His voice drawled, and he stretches out in the chair he's laid across the arms of. Pale skin, an obnoxious fanged smile, and half asleep red eyes. He's a vampire alright, but does he have to be such an asshole?
"Her blood is my blood too!" Her brown eyes glared holes into the lout.
"Only half way, Deari~."
Sunny huffs, her dark hair shaken into her face. She fixes it, going back to decorating. "Then why do ya even stick around? She died six years ago. Get lost."
Saldis frowns deeply, tilting his head. The young Lady Chalice had been rather cold to him ever since that day when she was only fourteen. Anyone could drain themselves of their life force, but he was incredibly frustrated that his Lady Chalice hadn't even warned him or told him what for. Anyone's guess was as good as his at this moment, and he had known her for twenty or more years now. "Hm~, I don't feel like it just yet." Though he had been contemplating it for a while.
A few of the decorations wilt and fall partially. Sunny huffs again, throwing down the ones she was still holding. "Why am I even bothering?! No friends; no reason! Why even decorate or have cake?!" Saldis watches the girl's yellow sundress swish around her, as she does a full swish of a turn, yanking down more of the decorations full force. "It's just another year of no fucking progress!" Her voice is starting to break and her body shakes. "I just can't make any without her there to teach me!" She swallows her face with her hands.
Saldis exhales silently, somber. He rises from the chair, popping his back as he walks to Sunny. It's almost effortless, the way he slings the lights back over the hooks which were nailed up yesterday. He plugs them in. The yellow light filling the room causes him to flinch and his eyes to adjust. But, it also makes every vase of flowers in the room sparkle, shining hundreds of small light refractions all over the walls. There are soft sobs in the mid-day silence.
"Suesanna, if you could have all the time in the world to figure it all out, would you take it?"
She rubs at her eyes harshly. "Figure what all out?" She stares up at him, the lights highlighting her tears.
He shrugs and gestures vaguely to the room. "Magic. The language of the plants. Whatever your mother was after. Life in general, I guess." There's a distant look in his eyes as he stares into the room and past it. Sunny bites her lower lip, unsure if to answer. It felt like the question was genuine. "You have your mother's drive, and you're always asking questions... I'm sure you've seen how lost I've been without her need for answers. You have that same need. But, instead of asking others, you want to find it yourself. Would you like all the time you'll ever need to do that?"
The gears in her brain were turning; her tears slow to a stop while she processes. Did he mean... "Saldis, you're already a thrawl."
"And?"
"You can't just-," She exhales shortly. "Not without..."
"Tell me, what exactly have I been doing with all this time for myself?" Nothing. Saldis hadn't used it for anything before Lady Chalice, and ever since she passed he'd gone back to doing nothing again. "I'd rather someone use it."
"What will you do after?"
"Go be mortal for the day. Maybe eat something that has garlic without its protective qualities stinging the curse in my veins. Get my ears pierced with silver. Sleep. I'll figure it out."
He ruffles her hair then strides to one of the antique shelves. It's covered in dust, the large round hat box, red and beige and tied shut with ribbon. He hands it to Sunny, her emotions making it weigh far more than it should. She gently pushes the lid up and off. A beautifully woven yellow sun hat. Saldis places it on her head, shading her face from the lights. He kneels, taking her left hand and kissing her knuckles. He's staring through the veil again. Time is drinking this moment. Will there be an answer? Should the question be asked again? You can just feel the turning point in both lives, that drumroll before the fall.
"Does it hurt?"
He smiles against her knuckles. "A prick, and it does feel draining."
"And, you'll just be gone after this?"
"You'll be on your own, yes. I'm not sure how different it'll be though; we've hardly acknowledged each other for much these past years."
"... I'm sorry."
"Don't be. Just remember me; you'll have years to chance forgetting. ... And, please figure out what she was even looking for." He glance up at the tanned gardener, and in her face he can see his Lady Chalice again. A woman he had admired for years which had danced with him but never intertwined. A love he'd never committed for but always held in his heart. Her devotion had always been her craft and her daughter anyways, even years before he'd meet her. "Young witch of sun and flowers, of herbs and garden creatures. On today, your twentieth birthday, I gift you my immortality. I hope it does better for you."
And, he's right. It's a prick in the center of her inner wrist. It's dizzying. Her eyes feel glossed over, even though they're squeezed shut. There is a sharpness in her ears as they reshape. There's a metalic taste in her mouth when her canines sharpen, as she had been bracing herself for worse of a feel. But, aside from those things, all she can feel is the magic as it transfers and swirls in her own soul. It's almost disagreeable with her personal magic, but she's able to hold it, calming it as if all it had longed for was warmth.
Saldis gently kisses the spot, retrieving a handkerchief and tying it snuggly. His eyes are a cloudy blue, and his ears are now rounded. There's a vague glimpse of leftover fangs, as he shoots his damned smile at her again. It's still just as obnoxious as the first time but for different reasons. This time it's frustrating because it's the last time she'll ever see it.
