Gubbins – noun – informal
1. (functioning as singular) an object of little or no value
2. (functioning as singular) a small device or gadget
3. (functioning as plural) odds and ends; litter or rubbish
4. (functioning as singular) a silly person
5. (functioning as herself) a former roleplayer seeking a reconnection with a beloved hobby
It might be cliché to start with an admission that I am terrible at introductions, but I am. I pretty much just show up, linger on the periphery for a while, watch and wait for the right moment, and then jump in. I've never enjoyed announcing my presence. But whatever. I'm doing it. Hi. I'm here.
I'm a veteran roleplayer, I guess, though it has been many many years since I have had the opportunity to lose myself in a good collaborative story. I've had some amazing partners in the past, but life has scattered us all. I've had that "something's missing" feeling for a while now, and maybe this site will help quench that thirst.
I'd like to think I'm a fairly literate roleplay partner. I've been writing for a very long time, and I've written collaboratively with people of varying skill levels. I consider myself to be a bit of a chameleon when it comes to roleplay. I can adapt to most situations/genres/character styles. I don't feel like I'm at my best in sci-fi or fantasy, mostly because I'm not extremely familiar with the general genres. I don't really enjoy playing anthro characters. I have nothing against them, they just don't do it for me. I prefer human because that is what I understand.
When I roleplay, I don't like it when everything is pre-determined. I like it when the stories develop organically. If a pair ends up falling for each other throughout the course of a roleplay, awesome. It isn't my initial goal to set out to hook my characters up with others (they are strong independent souls that don't need no man/woman/partner/etc!). In that same vein, I don't write smut simply to write smut. I understand that for many, roleplay is a way to be able to engage with certain sexual fantasies, but that is not what I'm into. If sex organically happens in a roleplay, that's one thing. But it is never the focus of my roleplays. It's just not something I'm interested in. So, yeah, I'm not averse to it, but it is absolutely not my focus.
In real life (that horrible place I like to call the Outernet), I am a grad student and I also teach English, Literature, and Creative Writing at the college level. Now that I've said that, I can feel you double-checking my post for spelling and grammatical errors. A reminder: those who teach English are also human. I won't scour your stuff for mistakes if you don't scour mine. Deal?
So, yeah. I guess that's an introduction? It may take me a bit to figure out exactly what I'm looking for here, but I hope to get to write with some of you!
