Hmm so Denhart were sort of like colonial Britain? I was actually aiming for having them be the 'outcasts' because of their natural inclinations. However, I actually think making the sky people (if you guys like the idea of the 4th kingdom being a floating island kingdom) be the Imperialists. Maybe they were so arrogant and powerful due to their position (I mean, the could fly lol), but their influence got culled a long time ago. Now they kind of live in isolation up in the sky, bitter about their loss. I want to keep Denhart as the 'misunderstood' necromancers who live hard lives and as such are tough and 'evil' in the eyes of the other kingdoms. Perhaps they started the rebellion a long time ago, but the other kingdoms willingly ignore that because they think they're creepy and distrust their 'evil ways'.

The fae kingdom (I say fae because it's not just faeries, it's anything fae), Nannallia, can be the way you described it. I don't want to make Denhartians the villains because it feels too antithetical to what I designed them as, and also I think it's too easy to make them the villains, lol. Their whole philosophy is that they might be necromantic and seemingly 'evil', but they are too hastily misjudged by the other kingdoms.

The steampunk kingdom could have learned certain technologies, which they turned into steam-based due to their proximity to water sources and such, which can be seen as the effect of the influence the Empire had on them before they lost their grip.

If you want a separate, annexed kingdom (something else, not the fae because they are ancient and started up a long, long time ago, before they got subjugated), we could make an island nation in the sea, under the floating kingdom give or take, who operate as an extension of the sky people. I guess we can call them The Vleugsians, from The Vleugs Kingdom.

Of course yeah, sky kingdom it is. The fact that the world is in a muddled state with a booming economy in this steampunk kingdom after the fall of great empires long gone could be a cool little world state in this too. Start of a new era born from an interim period
It also kind of makes sense that The Fae kingdom would be incorporated by the sky people because they both can… fly.. lol.
This Vleugs Kingdom sounds intriguing too. I like the idea. Underground civilization always interested me

@Atomic Soul @Vincious Macabre @Cernunnos

So in summary so far, we've all decided the basic geopolitical landscape of this world, as well as the currently rudimentary plot of our characters being sort of unravelers of some sort of doom-bringing event during the culmination of a war?

I believe so. I will whip up a lore forum this weekend when I have time. Hopefully. While catching up with all my other RP duties 😂

I'm still in, but I need some time to consider all the suggestions and see how my character fits into the world and the plots. I'm comfortable with having a loose, mutually-built-upon plot, as long as we have agreements on how things "work" in the world.

I'm still working on her, but my character would be a human travelling performer, maybe with a circus, maybe on her own, but her famed knife-throwing skills are the forefront of the show either way. Her talent would come from a deal she made with a dark magical entity in order to elevate herself beyond just a boring human and be recognized. She gained lightning quick reflexes and sharp eyes in exchange for a life controlled by something like an addiction or a vampire-like need for something to stay alive, or maybe even something like a chronic illness. Her vibe would be very circus-gothic, so she'd fit best in the urban parts of Denhart.

In relation to the suggested plots, she might be interested in aiding in a war if she was being paid or there was something in it for her. She would function best as a spy or secret agent of some sort, or a mercenary. Her agreement and subsequent curse could also be a result of widespread growing evil. I like the idea of combining the war plot and growing evil plot.

Maybe the evil could be inadvertently "called out" by the negative energy brewing in the midst of war? Or, each nation could be suspecting the other nations for the cause of the growing evil, leading to a cold war situation.

I will post a link to my character sheet once I get it fully worked out.

Alright y'all, I've decided to write Ylva. She's a master huntress who lives in central Denhart, splitting off from her pack in order to live among humans. She hunts animals and monsters in the forest, bringing them to market for their meat and parts. She knows the forest like the back of her hand, and is a practical bestiary of the wilds.

Ah that sounds very cool. We should probably talk more about humans and the interactions between different races in general later. Maybe the steampunk kingdom could be majority human by population? Denhart as well?
I have not even started writing my character. All I know is I want to play some agile faerie guy with some sort of employment by the sky people. I'll return with more once I've solidified my character kind of.

I'll also write lore of faerie people once I have the go-ahead.

I was thinking something along these lines. Basically something at least in part brought about by the current tension between the Kingdoms

We have a setting with some lore and all that, and a generalization of the end game and a vague overall plot from A-Z, but what about B and C, etc? I am not one to play in a sandbox. This is already a big convoluted world and we haven't fleshed the details out for an actual story. We basically got: this is middle earth, these are Hobbits, and this one has an all powerful ring he needs to destroy while orcs and other baddies try to kill him.... And there's a plot to bring back the main big baddie. We neither have Frodo throwing the ring in Mount Doom or any of the meat of the story. I'm not asking for a detailed synopsis of every story beat, but can we get something? Like how are our characters going to meet, and why are they meeting, and once they meet then what? I'm used to being the DM of all the RP's I participate in and I'm really excited to let someone else lead. I just wanna make sure there's a story here to be a part of and not just a hodgepodge of ideas. No offense at all.

I think we're getting there, but there's also fun to be had in collaborative world-building and character creation as we work out plot details. The process is meant to be fun, not stressful, and with so many people involved it's entertaining to hear everyone's ideas and let things flesh themselves out. Just my opinion ^-^

Agreed. The goal is to write a story together and develop it over time, not to have it all figured out right off the bat. I think that the uncertainty and improvisation will be fun!

@Cernunnos That is fine. I explicitly state what kind of RP this would be through this boldfaced line:

Please note: I will not be the only one creating! Any creative world-building juices you're bringing with you are 100% welcome. Imagine the end result: an expansive, beautiful, creative, completely unique and varied world, created entirely by us! Something that could have only happened with our combination of minds!

I put that in there when I made the thread. It is very clear from this what kind of project I want to make with people. I don't like forcing a plotline on an open world where creativity can lead us to places we could not have anticipated by simply planning for them. No one is forcing you to join, and I don't want to be constantly bullied into making something you would enjoy, when I was very clear about what I want to do with people. I want to build a world, have an overarching plot-line, fill it with interesting characters (aka the other people and mine) and then let the story take us where it will.

If you do not like that, no one said you were absolutely forced to join us.

We are working on building the story. The others are participating and helping with the worldbuilding. You literally refused to participate in even that. That does not seem like a cooperative attitude to me.

It has been made clear what the plan is. And I said I was going to put everything together in a place once we finalise and agree on what we want to do. You can join us or not, it's entirely your choice.

I am a HUGE fan of letting others heavily influence the beautiful, cooperative world we all build together. It is why I made this thread. If you are not interested in that, that is fine, but make your position clear on whether you would like to participate in the activities we are doing, or not.

I never said this was a DND-type game where I am the DM and I just run a world for players.

I said it was a collaborative world-building experience where we write a story together.

I didn't cooperate? 🤔 I'm quite certain I dropped a decent sized paragraph with a bunch of ideas, and I'm not asking for a fully fleshed out story, I just said that. I can make a character for this easy, and hop in and write sure, but I'm looking for direction... Otherwise I'm just gonna be some random dude raising some random dead army for a tea party lol there's nothing stressful about this. I can do the random aimless bits but without some sort of narrative compass I'll just be frolicking about 🤣

Even a vague direction like, several spies unaware of each other are on a mission to infiltrate the floating kingdom and uncover it's secrets. Boom. Something to kick this off. I don't think that's asking too much or being stressful or uncooperative or anything. A little set up narrative.

Ok? And what did 3 of us say above? We are in the process of making it. You keep acting like 'are we there yet' like we are not deciding on the final form of the RP fast enough or some shit. You are acting like
can make a character for this easy, and hop in and write sure, but I'm looking for direction... this is somehow finalised and everyone is off making characters and we are about to start.

We are collectively reaching a fleshed out plot with a clear starting point. Everyone is weighing in. Yea, you said 'we could do x' but once we started actually deciding, you said you were gonna let us do our thing and just watch?

I'm so confused. I feel like I said everything that needs to be said for you not to be thinking this. Idk what else you want?

Well for one, idk why there has to be attitude, I don't always have the time to engage constantly. And for two, I have numerous ideas for characters but I can't really begin to narrow it down until I know more. I'm in no way rushing you, this is why I said I'd wait for more context. Also, who's to say the steam punk technology hasn't spread beyond that one nation? Is the necromsncy king lording over everyone only the ruler of one nation? Or everyone? If everyone, like I thought I read before, wouldn't they demand others share their prosperity with them? The fae land makes sense, as I can imagine they'd want to be left alone, but I can also imagine the other nations would constantly be invading to get their hand so some sort of magic thingy imbued with the fae's innate essence or magic. If there's a floating kingdom, is there a reason the necromancy leaders let them have their mysterious powers over the sky? Would they not want to exploit that power for themselves? I can't remember the other kingdom off the top of my head. Have we agreed on spies, or another reason for our characters to cross paths? Are we all picking characters from different nations? You mentioned there are gods. What kind of gods? These are the kinds of things that go through my head and I can't really calm that storm and ground myself enough to settle on a character if I don't know all these things. There's some more discussion material. As much as I love chaos, structure is important too. I didn't mean to upset anyone with my questions, but I ask questions to lead to discussions and results, not to demand you tell me. If I wasn't interested I wouldn't ask.

My guy we are figuring those things out right now 🤣

You don't have to make your character right now. I have not. Grounding the kingdoms is among the top priority as for world building right now

Lore Collection & Latest Info

General info:
One part of the starting world is dark and dreary and full of evil Baba Yaga-esque witches and demigods and even gods who just want to consume, kill, destroy. So their children, all kinds of aberrations, litter the world. A lot of the Necromantic nobility and the royal family flex their strength by having as many horrific monsters under their thumb as possible. The more fucked up and hard to control, the more respect you get.

There are also all kinds of insidious people, plots and plans. The royal family is not to be fucked with out of respect and admiration, and by the weaker ones, fear, but they are not a dictatorship or something else so meager. They are more akin to an absolute monarchy, but their role is to keep other kingdoms in check and protect their people, not so much lord their power over them.

I think you can compare it to... um... uhhh... I can't think of any one thing in particular but you mentioned The Witcher, that's somewhat of a good indication, but there are not many similarities other than monsters abound, and magical creatures are normal. Maybe it is a little bit like LOTR in that sense? But it's like an Edgar Allan Poe, gothic horror, supernatural dark fantasy type thing.

The magic system... ah, the magic system. I am not home so I am typing this on my phone, but here is the core idea:
You borrow from and manipulate nature. If a magic is more powerful and dark, you will probably have to pay some kind of price. The more powerful, the heftier the price. It's mostly as a force that exists within nature's forces, which the beings it made can channel into their will. It's as much a force as gravity (ok bad example that's convoluted... I'll say as gravity in the high school physics sense) and electromagnetism. In fact, that's a really good parallel. Instead of electronic components channelling electricity or your cells exchanging electrons and ions, you get to control this '5th force of nature' called magic. If we include humans, they would have to either learn through years and years and difficult trials to harness magic, be gifted by a deity or cursed by a malicious being, or basically never be able to control it. They somehow evolved without the biomagical systems to be able to channel it.

The force itself comes in a pure form, like raw energy, and the wielder can form it into what they wish, which is why it looks like many different types.

Technology in this world is more like pre-industrial Victorian times. People are starting to dabble with steampunk type technologies, and maybe even things like hextech if you've seen Arcane (not sure about adding this yet, or if we do want it, it'd be super new and belong to one of the other regions. I think I forgot to mention this but we would be in a world made of 4-5 kingdoms with distinct specialities and philosophies. While the dark area is full of monsters, others can be full of other mythical beings, dangerous and majestic and peaceful. Ofc you have non-harmful beings in the dark area too, but those are far and few inbetween.

There are 2 moons and a rocky ring around the planet."

New information:

The world is composed of 4-5 kingdoms (probably 4), with the above, horror-centred one being one of them.

The kingdoms:
1. Denhart: dark, gothic, Edgar-Allan-Poe meets the Witcher world.
2. Nannallia: the fae kingdom, full of wonderful beings, playful tricksters, psychedelic, crazy forests that you can get lost in for centuries, hags of a different kind from those of the Denhart region, so on. This place is full of free-dwellers, but near multiple castles and bigger gatherings which could be cities, some nobility and some richer 'laypeople' coexist.
3. Karvia, the steampunk kingdom. Relying on steampunk technology, full of awesome airships with magical-energy cannons, full of strange and wonderful beings similar to lizardines, marine-type beings, mermaids, humans(?), maybe even elvish type beings.
4. The Vleugsians, from The Vleugs Kingdom. The Sky Island' type of 'floating city' which is gold and white and full of pegasi and celestial-type beings, astronomers, sky-gazers, beings with wings, knowledge and poetry seekers... this kingdom used to be a powerful empire that lost against a rebellion about 300 years ago.
5. Potential fifth 'kingdom', which is subservient to The Vleugs and is an island in the sea, somewhere below Vleugs.

"Hmm so Denhart were sort of like colonial Britain? I was actually aiming for having them be the 'outcasts' because of their natural inclinations. However, I actually think making the sky people (if you guys like the idea of the 4th kingdom being a floating island kingdom) be the Imperialists. The Plot:
A war is just breaking out, after x years of peace between the nations, which did not have peace before because instead of 4 kingdoms, the world was full of scattered civilisations, like tribes and dutchies. Someone does something wrong at a meeting of the nations, and war breaks out. We could have 2 kingdoms vs 2 kingdoms (alliances and whatnot). But instead of being on the front-lines, we have a strange collection of people. Our players:
People who excel at niche things, such as espionage, magic-based sabotage, detectives, problem-solvers... and they end up finding the same truth: someone, something, is doing something that seems to be a danger to everyone simultaneously, which makes no sense. Ofc everyone blames the other countries, but who's truly to blame?

More Fleshed Out:
The Kingdoms:
1. Denhart: dark, gothic, Edgar-Allan-Poe meets the Witcher world. (more incoming).
It has a lot of different environments (aka forests, swamps, volcanic lands; these are closer to the coast). It has things like forest clearings with an enormous lake, where a big island in the middle hosts a tower full of spooky evil witches (it 100% has this).
In a world such as this, where monsters are constantly harrying people, a group or some individuals will have some reason to seek vengeance upon monsters, or help people from other kingdoms kill monsters, so monster hunters (groups or otherwise) exist. Now, the royal family, the Korakis, are very proud of the monsters in their lands, so people who specifically are out to kill monsters (even the ones who sneak out of their borders!) are seen as... well... enemies. In fact, rumour has it that the Korakis house a leviathan-scale basilisk under their castle, who eats monster hunters when they are caught!
2. [General:] Nannallia: the fae kingdom, full of wonderful beings, playful tricksters, psychedelic, crazy forests that you can get lost in for centuries, hags of a different kind from those of the Denhart region, so on. This place is full of free-dwellers, but near multiple castles and bigger gatherings which could be cities, some nobility and some richer 'laypeople' coexist.
[RK]:
Faeries are the most organised and humanoid of the fae creatures, having built the first advanced civilization in a bygone era that contributed fundamentally to early understanding of the world as well as culture and philosophy (Think maybe Ancient Greece in terms of cultural importance). In present times the modern incarnation of Nannallia has long since stopped being the cultural powerhouse of the continent, but they remain a considerably powerful nation nonetheless with relatively good diplomatic relations with the other Kingdoms.

I think due to their fae nature they are naturally charismatic beings, and this manifests in their magical abilities revolving around psychological manipulation (To charm, influence emotion, hallucinate, the like) enchantment of weapons and items, as well as the knack of illusifying and decrypting messages, images, and other forms of visual communication.

Faeries are mostly humanoid but possess 4 wings that allow them powered flight, which are made up long muscles stretching from the band blood, extremely flexible and stiffen in flight. They are covered in chitinous scales which reflect a blue-purple metallic sheen. The agility and speed at which they fly is partially influenced from innate magic that fairies evolved to facilitate flight. Their skin is usually fair but posses some bluish sheen, and hair that ranges from shockingly white to jet black. Eyes can be a myriad of different colors, and glow softly when using magical powers concerning psychological manipulation.

They worship the twin gods of the two moons (More elaboration on this necessary)
They speak Faeish, which is shared among other Fae creatures and has many dialects. (I'm thinking I'm going to base this language on Irish)

3. Karvia, the steampunk kingdom. Relying on steampunk technology, full of awesome airships with magical-energy cannons, full of strange and wonderful beings similar to lizardines, marine-type beings, mermaids, humans(?), maybe even elvish type beings.

This should put everything in one place and make it easier!

So I have some ideas for faeries:

I like all of that! I think it works perfectly. I'll add it to the lore post.

As far as the Wilds go, I was thinking there should be a deep, dark forested and marshy region at least partially around Denhart, where monstrous creatures live, like leshuns, werewolves (like Ylva), dryads, drowners and other necrophages, witches and clever women, wights, hags, and ghosts stalk between the trees and in the marshes. I actually wanted to change my character, I think...I'd like to make a mercenary who hunts these beasts for contract, a master hunter and walking bestiary, like a Witcher. Would that be alright? Can there be such a thing as a Witcher in this world? A specialized monster hunter to cull the beasts around Denhart and in the surrounding lands? Can he be mutated in order to defeat these beasts?

Some photos to maybe inspire your guys's creative juices for the biological mess littering Denhart forests
